The funicular in Lugano, which links the railroad 

station with the city center, originates from the 

year 1886 and is a key means of public transport. 

At the time, it was the first installation of its kind 

to incorporate an Abt passing loop. In fall 2016, 

Doppelmayr/Garaventa performed a complete 

overhaul of the installation and took charge of the 

project planning, engineering, delivery and installation 

of the entire electromechanical equipment as 

well as the cabins. Two funicular cabins bring up to 

2,240 passengers an hour from the recently refurbished 

railroad station to the city center.

Since spring 2016, a ropeway has crossed the 

strait in the famous Ha Long Bay, enabling visitors 

to travel in comfort to an impressive observation 

wheel. The Ha Long Queen Cable Car has 

simultaneously broken two world records. The 

two double-decker carriers, each built to carry 

230 passengers, are the biggest aerial tramway 

cabins anywhere in the world to date. The steel 

ropes are supported by two towers, one of which 

is the world’s tallest ropeway tower rising up to a 

height of 188.88 meters. Passengers enjoy breathtaking 

views of the unique natural scenery. Installing 

the ropes was a particular challenge. As Ha 

Long Bay plays a major role in cargo shipping with 

large vessels, the entire rope installation operation 

had to be performed at a height of 50 meters above 

sea level.

Loen is attracting attention with new highlights that 

make for an exceptional mountain experience. In addition 

to the world’s longest via ferrata suspension 

bridge, the region boasts a new ropeway attraction. 

At 53° (133%), the Loen Skylift offers one of the 

world’s steepest aerial tram rides. The tramway has 

two sets of track ropes and no track rope brake. It 

features a strongly overhanging tower standing on 

two feet and anchored back with a tie bar. Each cabin 

provides ample room for 45 passengers. 

The trip on the Loen Skylift takes just five minutes. 

The lower terminal lies directly on Loen Fjord with a 

landing stage for boats bringing tourists from visiting 

cruise liners. The upper terminal is located on the 

1,011-meter Mount Hoven. From here, visitors can enjoy 

the stunning view across the fjord to the Jostedal 

Glacier, which is the biggest on the European mainland. 

A new restaurant and a wide range of hiking 

trails provide attractions for all types of guests.

The reversible aerial tramway in the Norwegian city of Tromsø is 

regarded as the northernmost passenger ropeway in the world. It 

was opened in 1961 by the shipping company Brødrene Jakobsens 

Rederi, which played a pioneering role in Norwegian business and 

in the fishing industry, and was instrumental in developing the infrastructure 

in the region around Tromsø. The iconic tram underwent 

extensive modernization after 55 years in service. The time frame 

for the construction was very tight and the work in winter 2015/2016 

was performed during the 24-hour darkness period, which occurs 

in the north of Norway. The snow, wind and icy temperatures were 

also challenges that the tramway specialists mastered with excellence. 

Like the original cabins, the new ones carry the two symbols 

of the Jakobsen shipping company: the seal and the polar bear.

The Schönleiten lift is a ropeway of the latest D-Line generation from 

Doppelmayr that has been making an attractive contribution toward 

modernization of the Saalbach-Hinterglemm ski area since the current 

winter season. As a key feeder lift comprised of two sections and 

offering a transport capacity of 3,200 passengers an hour, it helps 

to ensure that guests wishing to access the popular ski circuit don’t 

have to wait long and enjoy maximum convenience. The Schönleiten 

lift has a powerful direct drive in each section. With a drive output of 

945 kW, these drives rank among the most powerful that Doppelmayr 

has ever installed on a ropeway. Guests also benefit from top comfort 

during the trip as the new cabins offer more space and well-upholstered 

seats.

World record in Sölden. The new Giggijoch lift is a D-Line installation 

and promises a first-class experience all along the line. The visionary 

new installation, which Doppelmayr implemented in collaboration with 

the operating company, Bergbahnen Sölden, carries up to 4,500 passengers 

per hour and direction. That is more passengers than any other 

continuous-movement monocable gondola in the world. A total of 

134 cabins, each offering space for 10 passengers, bring winter sports 

enthusiasts from the bottom station in Sölden up to the Giggijoch. 

The bottom station is an architectural sight in itself and a landmark in 

Sölden. The space limitations gave rise to a tower-like central building 

which also houses the ropeway equipment. A particularly eye-catching 

feature is the panoramic depiction of the Ötztal Alps in perforated metal, 

which conceals the cabin boarding area.

Doppelmayr built the first ski lift in Zürs in 1937. Now, almost 

80 years later, that ski destination is part of a ski area link-up that 

heralded a new era at the start of the 2016 season. No less than 

four new ropeway installations have made Ski Arlberg Austria's biggest 

ski area, with 305 kilometers of trails and 87 lifts. They enable 

guests to reach every resort in the Arlberg ski area quickly, simply 

and comfortably. Whether heading for St. Anton, St. Christoph, 

Stuben, Zürs, Lech, Oberlech or Schröcken and Warth - guests 

board the nearest lift and have the entire mountain lift infrastructure 

open to them. From Zürs, the Trittkopf lift I goes to the new intermediate 

station; from there, it is possible to ride either to the new 

top station of the Trittkopf lift II or to take the new Flexen lift on to 

Alpe Rauz in Stuben. Here, the new Albona lift II is available for 

those wishing to travel further. Also new and part of the ski area 

link-up is the Rauz surface lift to the bottom station of the Flexen lift 

as well as the practice slope lift at the bottom station of the Trittkopf 

lift, which was completed back in winter 2015.

Now doubled in size, the Arlberg ski area will offer visitors even 

greater comfort than before. The new lifts are a key part of the sustainable 

transport concept for the Arlberg: Every day, the Flexen lift, 

for example, replaces 120 bus trips.

The first line belonging to Phase II of the world’s biggest 

ropeway network opened in Bolivia. The Línea 

Azul (blue line) lies entirely in La Paz / El Alto and 

extends the network by almost five kilometers. Passengers 

can board and disembark at a total of five 

stations along this line. Thanks to the direct through 

travel, it is possible to ride the entire length of the 

route from the first to the last station without having 

to change. The new line links up directly with the 

existing Línea Roja (red line), providing connections 

from several districts in El Alto to La Paz. The route 

crosses the biggest street market in Latin America, 

which makes it a key means of public transport for 

the city. It is also a very important line for students 

as it connects the University UPEA of El Alto with the 

ropeway network.

Summer 2016 marked the start of the biggest investment project in the history of 

the Kläppen ski resort. A 10-passenger gondola lift from Doppelmayr/Garaventa 

is part of the project. The two sections of the Gondol Sälen are linked by means 

of an angle station. This also houses the drive, which provides the propulsion for 

both rope loops via a twin-groove bullwheel. The 47 cabins with panorama glazing 

guarantee fantastic views. The barrier-free cabin design ensures that passengers 

with wheelchairs or baby strollers can enjoy a comfortable ride. The customized ski 

holders are fitted on the outside of the cabin. Once arrived at the top, the winter 

sports practitioners head straight for the ski slopes, while other guests enjoy the 

spectacular view over coffee in the mountain restaurant. In good weather, it is possible 

to see as far as Norway.

The new, luxurious Wynn Palace casino resort in Cotai, Macau, opened 

its doors in August 2016. A detachable gondola lift from Doppelmayr 

is an eye-catching highlight. The comfortable Sky Cabs bring guests 

to the sumptuous casino and hotel, following a route that takes them 

around the resort’s 3.25-hectare Performance Lake. From a height of 

up to 30 meters, guests are treated to a fantastic view of the resort and 

the lake with its choreographed displays combining water and light.

Particular expertise was required for the construction of this installation. 

A newly designed mounting system used for the first time worldwide 

made it possible to meet the high demands in terms of noise 

and vibration emissions. Two deflection stations, three towers and 

the drive station are positioned on the hotel roof. Nonetheless, in the 

rooms immediately below, there is absolutely no sound to be heard 

from the ropeway as the innovative system prevents the transmission 

of noise and vibrations into the building. This means that guests can 

enjoy a pleasant and undisturbed visit to the hotel and casino.

The 24-year-old Flimjoch lift was the absolute transport king of all the 

lifts operated by Silvrettaseilbahn AG. By the end of the winter season 

2015/2016, it had made almost 30 million trips. Since December 2016, 

it has been replaced by an 8-seater chairlift from Doppelmayr. 

The top station of the new lift has two exits – one on the eastern side 

and one on the northern side. This was done to address the issue of 

changing wind conditions on the ridge. Depending on the wind situation, 

either the eastern or northern exit can be opened, providing a 

major improvement in comfort. 

Another special feature is the tower number 3. It is an intersection tower 

and consequently part of two 8-seater chairlifts: the Höllboden lift and 

the Flimjoch lift. With up to 6,900 passengers an hour, it ranks as one 

of the towers with the highest passenger flows worldwide.

As from the winter season 2016/2017, the Silvretta 

Montafon ski area in Vorarlberg has introduced a 

huge improvement in comfort with the Silvretta lift 

from Doppelmayr/Garaventa. The new 8-seater chairlift 

with seat heating and bubbles, which replaces 

a double chairlift, marks another important step towards 

modernization of the lift infrastructure. It now 

brings winter sports enthusiasts directly to Gampapinger 

Mountain, where twelve trails and five ski 

routes await them as descent options. Thanks to the 

high speed of up to 5.5 meters per second, the trip 

takes just 6.5 minutes despite covering a length of 

over two kilometers. Even the chairs are state of the 

art: The comfort seats have padding and seat heating 

and the child-friendly restraining bars with footrests 

operate automatically.

The new 6-seater chairlift Waidoffen is the first 

D-Line chairlift worldwide. Thanks to the latest 

technology from Doppelmayr, it meets the highest 

demands in terms of safety and design, and 

represents a quantum leap in comfort. The ergonomically 

formed individual seats, which also offer 

greater width, are particularly comfortable as well 

as having integrated heating. Waidoffen replaces a 

quad chairlift and now carries one third more passengers 

in half the time. Once they arrive at the top 

at 2,300 m, all winter sports enthusiasts – whether 

beginners, leisurely or athletic skiers – can look forward 

to idyllic trails. 

The Doppelmayr Chair Detachable (DCD) combines 

safety and quality in a modern design. The 

series includes both a 6-seater and an 8-seater 

version. A choice of color schemes and individual 

branding on the back of the chair provide new possibilities 

for the operating company. The materials 

used have been chosen to meet top requirements 

in terms of durability and resistance. The optimized 

form and function of the new D-Line suspension ensures 

enhanced ride comfort. When carrying children, 

only one accompanying adult is required per 

chair. This is thanks to the child-friendly autolock 

function, where the restraining bar is automatically 

closed, remains locked during the trip, and is automatically 

opened again in the top station.

The operating company, Skiliftgesellschaft links der 

Breitach, presents the first part of its quality drive on 

the Ifen and a comfort highlight for the area’s guests. 

The Olympia Lift carries 2,000 passengers an hour 

to the popular Olympia slope in top comfort – and at 

6 m/s, currently ranks as the fastest chairlift in 

the province of Vorarlberg. The new Olympia 

Lift is equipped with bubbles, seat heating and 

child-friendly restraining bars and replaces a surface 

lift between Ifenhütte and the top station. In 

addition, the operating company is also building 

more lifts on the Ifen itself as part of the quality drive. 

Two 10-passenger gondola lifts in the new D-Line 

generation are set to replace the Ifen and Hahnenköpfle 

lifts, with construction scheduled to start in 

spring 2017.

the sector sit up and take notice. The 6-seater 

Schaffürggli chairlift is the first installation in 

Switzer land with the child-friendly chair model

heating. In the Madrisa ski area, it is now possible 

for one adult to ride on one chair with up to five 

children with a body height exceeding 90 cm. A 

loading conveyor which can be raised helps skiers 

to board independently. In addition, the new lift addresses

desire to enable visitors with impaired mobility to

Rosa Khutor is an all-year ski and recreational area in the Western Caucasus. 

The alpine skiing events were held here during the 2014 Winter Olympic Games 

in Sochi. Since the Winter Olympics, the area has seen a continuous rise in visitor 

numbers. Rosa Khutor is more successful than ever, attracting almost two million 

guests a year. This made it necessary to increase capacity. Rosa Khutor has improved 

comfort for its guests and reduced waiting times through the addition of 

three new detachable ropeways from Doppelmayr. Since 2016, two 8-passenger 

gondola lifts and a 6-seater chairlift with bubbles have opened up additional trail 

kilometers in Upper Khutor. These installations provide fast, convenient access to 

the slopes for the resort’s guests. 

The new Doppelmayr lifts are part of a long-term development plan for Rosa 

Khutor. They also take quality to a new level for the 10,500 guests who visit the 

area on a daily basis.

ProTow Premiere 

in the Königsberg Bike Park 

In the new Königsberg bike park in Hollenstein an der Ybbs, a surface lift 

installation is the first worldwide to be granted an operating permit to carry 

mountain bikers with the novel ProTow system from Doppelmayr. Using the 

new transport system is simple: When the biker boards, the ProTow device 

is attached to the handle bars and during the uphill trip the attachment tube 

is fixed to the bike handle with the right hand. As soon as the biker lets go of 

the attachment tube, the ProTow device is automatically released from the 

head tube thanks to its well thought out design, thus ensuring safe transport 

of passenger and bike. The uphill trip is both relaxing and safe for the biker, 

who holds the handle bars with both hands and consequently is always in 

full control of the bike. It takes between one and two hours to convert a lift 

installation from winter operation for use of the ProTow system. Once again, 

Doppelmayr is setting an innovation milestone and opening up new possibilities 

for surface lift operators.

The mining company Minera Media Luna, S.A. de C.V. (MML), which 

is a wholly owned subsidiary of Torex Gold Resources, Inc., operates 

the gold mine El Limón-Guajes roughly 180 km to the southwest of 

Mexico City. When it came to transporting the extracted ore, MML 

decided on the proven RopeCon ® from Doppelmayr Transport Technology. 

The open-pit mine El Limón is located on a steep ridge some 

400 m above the central processing facility. The rope span between 

the loading station and the only tower is 1,200 m. The RopeCon ® used 

for the El Limón project generates approximately 1 MW of "green" energy 

via the braking system, which reduces the overall running costs. 

The avoidance of dust and noise emissions is another factor in favor 

of the RopeCon ® system. In addition, the automatic transport system, 

which can be integrated into the mine’s central control system, 

increases the safety of operations. Over the entire life of the mine, of 

roughly ten years, the RopeCon ® will carry 1,000 tons of ore per hour.

Since 2005, a RopeCon ® system has been in use at the Tüfentobel 

waste tip to transport inert materials along an extensive stretch of valley 

that will subsequently be filled in and relandscaped. The conveyor 

belt is being successively extended so that it discharges the waste exactly 

where it is intended to go on the pile. Since the system first went 

into service, the discharge point has been relocated several times in 

order to minimize the distances covered by arriving garbage trucks 

as well as by the bulldozers used to distribute the waste material. In 

March 2016, a second RopeCon ® was incorporated directly within the 

rope span. Material transfer takes place at a height of roughly 20 m. 

The new RopeCon ® installation can be operated in both directions. As 

this second system uses the existing track ropes, it does not require 

its own support structure.

Hans im Glück (in English "Hans in Luck") is the latest 

theme for SkiWelt Söll. A new gondola lift as well 

as the associated ski slope promises a fun experience 

for guests. Support for the implementation 

project was provided by Input Projektentwicklungs 

GmbH. 

The adventure ski trail underneath the new 10-passenger 

Hans in Luck gondola lift offers plenty of 

excitement day and night. Fun obstacles and challenges 

such as ski tunnels, jumps, bridges and 

plenty more besides make skiing all the more enjoyable 

for adults and children alike. Elements from 

the fairytale, Hans in Luck, can be found at intervals 

along the trail, such as milk cans, clover leaves, 

goose feathers, figures, etc. 

The cabins on the new D-Line gondola lift are also 

part of the themed concept. Every second carrier 

bears a picture taken from Hans in Luck. From 

Wednesday through Saturday, the lift is illuminated 

at night, making it an even more prominent feature.

"White Mountain" Experience Concept

2016 was very much a year of modernization for the Safed Dara ski resort in Tajikistan. 

It lies in the Takob Varzob district, some 70 kilometers north of the capital, Dushanbe. 

A completely new orientation was envisaged for the entire infrastructure at the center of 

the resort’s winter and summer offer. In conjunction with the planning of a new ropeway, 

Input Projektentwicklungs GmbH was commissioned to develop a new experience concept 

for the ski resort based on the "White Mountain" vision. The first part of the concept 

in the area of the bottom station was completed in record time. The next part, which 

goes under the name of "Local Tradition Area – Living History", involves the creation 

of a themed village on the mountain, where guests can discover the diversity of Tajik 

tradition and culture as part of an interactive experience. The population from the nearby 

villages can be involved in making their products and handicrafts an integral feature.
