For a few days, Hong Kong becomes the global
capital of the wine industry, and all indications are
that the show will be another great one!
With 1,300 exhibitors from 34 nations and 54
talks and tastings, there’s way too much to see all in
one hit. We are thus happy to present, for the first
time in Hong Kong, Vinexpo Daily – your official
daily information source at the show. Our aim is
to highlight ideas and opportunities that you may
perhaps not have otherwise considered, as well as
spotlighting the major groundswell trends that should
not be ignored.
Vinexpo Daily will, every day of the event, bring
you what we term “information intelligence” in
harmony with the key themes of the show, to enable
you to better plan and enjoy your time here, and
consequently to have a more enriched experience.
Every day, we will be spotlighting regions, wine
varieties, spirits, and major trade announcements.
You will be able to take home with you a full round
up of “what’s new in the industry” – and no doubt
make a few colleagues that couldn’t make it to
Hong Kong jealous of your time here!
We wish you a very enjoyable, fruitful and profitable
show.
ADVERTORIAL
Exceptional Wines from
the Isle of Beauty
Corsica’s wine union, the UVIB, is
present at Vinexpo Hong Kong with
exceptional products, highly noted by
Robert Parker, including the Prestige du
Président range (white, rosé and red),
and the XX270 Aléria – 100% Syrah
red.
Prestige du Président is a product of the
earth and the sun, of sea and mountain,
demonstrating all the originality of
a truly exceptional wine. The wines
are developed using an innovative
process wherein maturity of the grapes
is measured regularly and precisely
with regard to sugar concentration,
volume and colour. The optimum date
for harvest is thus fixed, with nighttime
vendanges.
The red wine is a marriage of
Niellucciu, Grenache and Syrah
marrying beautifully with wild boar stew
or a côte de boeuf on the grill. The
white is 100% Vermentinu (Malvoisie)
- an excellent accompaniment for a
salad, seafood or grilled fish. And the
rosé is a Sciaccarellu/Syrah marrying
perfectly with white meats, grilled fish
or Mediterranean dishes.
ALÉRIA – AN AGE-OLD
WINEGROWING REGION
Implanted by the ancient Greeks,
developed by the Etruscans and
cultivated by the Romans, vines have
been present in the region of Aléria in
Corsica for over 2500 years.
XX 270 Aléria is a 100% Syrah wine,
from 30-year-old vines planted on hills
between the Mediterranean Sea and
Lake Diana on the western side of the
“Isle of Beauty”. Lower soil levels are
of clay and pebbles, ensuring an ideal
maturity for the grapes.
Fermentation is set between 25°C and
30°C, with regular stirring in order to
extract the optimum from the grapes.
Total fermentation is for three weeks,
allowing for the elaboration of a wine
perfect for ageing. Light filtration and
maturing in vats for 8 months ensures
the preservation of natural aromas and
a softening of the tanins.
This red wine is characterised by an
intense ruby robe. It is fine and rich on
the nose, with a peppery character and
notes of violet. In the mouth, the wine
is ample and round, with final notes of
silky tanins. It marries beautifully with
traditional Corsican dishes such as
grilled lamb, sautéed veal, cold cuts or
cheeses •
TRADE TALK
PRESS CORNER
Robert Joseph
Editor, Meininger’s Wine
Business International
LET’S TALK BUSINESS
Thoughts of Meininger’s Wine Business International
editor-at-large Robert Joseph on Vinexpo Hong Kong
Since its launch a decade ago, Meininger’s Wine Business
International has become a uniquely trusted source
of information and analysis of local and international
news and trends. We asked editor-at-large Robert Joseph
how long he has been following Vinexpo, and what his
thoughts are about the show…
I have attended Vinexpo in Bordeaux since 1985, and have
seen the exhibition evolve over the 30 years since then, including
moves into Japan, the US and of course Hong Kong. I do not think
I’ve missed any of the Bordeaux and Hong Kong events.
Seeking Value
Yang Lu
Corporate/Group Wine Director,
Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts
in Quality Wines
What do you see as being the biggest groundswell trends at
the moment?
There are several trends. Many people, I expect, would point to
the growth in artisanal “natural” and organic wines. I would just
as readily refer to the explosive increase in the sales of industrially
produced, fruit-flavoured wines and of “red blends” with no
specific region. Consolidation of distribution – and production is
also an issue. We are losing a Bordeaux château every day…
Vinexpo Hong Kong’s Academy features a rich program of
conferences, talks and tastings. Which ones are you most
looking forward to?
I am looking forward to Li Demei ‘s presentation on Chinese
regions and the Vinexpo session on the Chinese market •
Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts is a luxury
hotel group with close to 100 properties
all over the world. Yang Lu, Corporate/
Group Wine Director, in charge of the
group’s entire wine programme and
sommelier team, is at Vinexpo Hong
Kong as a buyer. We asked him how he
sees demand evolving.
Demand for wine is evolving fast for the
hospitality industry. Of course it is difficult and
even nonsensical to generalise on what is
happening in China in the very short term. But
basically, guests are definitely looking for more
value. Hotels must abandon the old “beverage
cost comes first” mentality if we want to sell
more wines.
What are your key reasons for attending
Vinexpo Hong Kong?
I come to meet old friends and make new
friends, drink some good juice and have some
good laughs.
How important is Vinexpo for you when it comes
to finding new ideas and products?
Very important, especially for new ideas, and
wine-related innovations, as well as tasting
some new vintages •
Hospitality From The Heart
Hong Kong based Shangri-La Hotels
hotel companies, currently owns and/
Shangri-La brand with a room inventory
of over 39,000. Over four decades the
group has established its brand hallmark
of ‘hospitality from the heart.’ The group
has a substantial development pipeline
with upcoming projects in mainland
China, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India,
Myanmar, Philippines, Saudi Arabia
and Sri Lanka. Inspired by the legendary
land featured in James Hilton’s novel Lost
Horizon published in 1933, the name
Shangri-La encapsulates the serenity and
service for which Shangri-La is renowned
6 VINEXPO DAILY / DAY 1 / TUESDAY 24 TH MAY 2016

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
Dr Domenico Zonin
President, UIV
ZONIN CALLS
ON EUROPEAN
COMMISSION TO
FORM NEW TRADE
STRATEGY FOR WINE
In a recent statement released by the UIV, the organisation’s
president, Domenico Zonin calls on the European
Commission to form a new continental strategy for the
wine industry.
Diversity Is Key
UIV president Domenico Zonin underlines
Italian wine’s ability to match a wide range
of tastes and demands
While Italy is the official partner country of Vinexpo Hong
Kong, the question remains, just how is Italian wine perceived
in Asia, and which geographic zones are the “sweet spots”
here? We put the question to Domenico Zonin – President of
Unione Italiana Vini…
Italian geographic areas most
known in Asia are the Veneto,
Emilia Romagna, Tuscany and
Piedmont regions, even if the
Asian consumer is more drawn to
types and varieties of wines than
to the denominations of origin.
So red wines appear as the
favourite ones, and the varieties
they rather prefer are first of all
the Lambrusco, more and more
a successful product joining the
traditional flag wines as Brunello,
Barolo, Amarone and Prosecco.
Your background includes time
spent in the USA and France…
What, today, would you say
are the key assets of Italian
wine compared to others?
The great qualitative richness
guaranteed by the many different
Italian terroirs dedicated to
viticulture and by the over 500
vine varieties growing in Italy.
The result means a diversification
in products able to meet a
very wide range of tastes and
demands, safeguarding an
excellent price/quality ratio.
What are the main roles and
strengths of the UIV?
UIV is the most important
association whose main objective
is to represent Italian wine
producers. Bringing together
450 companies, UIV is aimed
at defending producers’ interests
while confirming both the quality
and the competitive advantage
of Italian viticulture.
How important is Vinexpo HK
in terms of your regional business?
Vinexpo HK is a great and
important chance for the Asian
market as it has succeeded in
building a strong reputation
among the buyers in Asia. Italian
wines must efficiently oversee
these dynamic and strategic
markets, and Vinexpo HK
© SU BOTTI
provides a means to seize their
increasing export opportunities.
What is your fondest wine
memory?
We were among the first to
believe in the great potential of
the Prosecco wine. That’s why
we can’t help being proud and
glad that nowadays the Prosecco
Zonin Cuvée 1821 is the point
of reference in all the main
international markets •
ITALIAN
WINES MUST
EFFICIENTLY
OVERSEE THESE
DYNAMIC AND
STRATEGIC
MARKETS, AND
VINEXPO HK
PROVIDES A MEANS
TO SEIZE THEIR
INCREASING
EXPORT
OPPORTUNITIES.
Speaking in Milan, Zonin suggested that Europe was
“not yet strong enough in the field of export”, and called
upon the commission to support the combined interests
of major exporters. The roundtable, organised at Expo
2015 by the Italian Wine Union, and entitled, “‘Europa
del vino e commercio globale: esperienze e prospettive”
(Europe of wine and global trade: experiences and
perspectives) provided an overview on the status and
prospects of the European wine sector, dialoguing with
the leading representatives of the European Associations
of wine producers along with Italian institutions – in a
summit setting. Speakers included the Italian Minister for
Food, Agriculture and Forestry, and Jean-Luc Demarty,
the Director-General of DG TRADE for the European
Commission.
“The European context in which we are working is one
of weak economic growth, so the export manifest must
focus increasingly towards third States,” stated Domenico.
“Suffice to say that today, among the top 15 export
markets of Italy’s wines, only 5 are non-European countries
(USA, Canada, Japan, Russia and China). In addition,
the first three clients of our wines (USA, Germany, UK)
account for 58% of Italian exports of wine by volume and
54% of that in value. It is evident, therefore, that Europe
needs a strong business strategy that focuses on free trade
agreements by identifying certain countries as priorities in
negotiations.”•
A HIGHLY REPUTED
NAME IN THE WINE
TRADE
While Domenico Zonin is the President of the
Unione Italiana Vini, his family has been in the
wine business for many generations, and he was
recently also named as president of ZONIN1821,
one of Europe’s most successful wine companies.
Drinks International recently named Zonin 1821
as no. 17 in the Top 50 most admired wine
brands worldwide – 2016, the highest ever listing
for the brand, and the third consecutive year that
it appeared in the top 50.
SPECIAL FEATURE: RED WINES
SNAPSHOT OF
THE GLOBAL AND
ASIAN MARKETS
FOR RED WINE
Globally, red wine accounts for 54% of all still wine
sales, and is predicted to grow by around 0.3% in
the period between 2015 and 2019.
While the USA is the world’s biggest market for
red wine, with over 136 million cases consumed
in 2014, it is in Asia-Pacific where the future and
market for red wine is particularly strong and where
wine consumption is heavily skewed towards red
wines.
CHINA - China is now the third largest consumer
of red wine in the world and slowly catching up with
France with sales soaring by 74% between 2009
and 2013. But the rate of growth is predicted to
fall by 2.6% in the five years to 2019, to 135
million cases.
KOREA - In South Korea red wine accounts
for nearly three quarters (73.7%) of all still wine
consumption.
Within just a couple of years, Arrogant Frog
has made itself the mascot of the Estates of
REGIONAL SPOTLIGHT: FRANCE
France’s Best Kept Secret is Out!
The nation’s biggest winemaker @ Vinexpo on a mission of educating
and informing the market
Having taken the helm of Vinadeis five years ago, taking the
company from 130-million to around 300-million Euro turnover,
Bertrand Girard is somewhat atypical in the business, having
spent many years in his past marketing career in Asia, living
in Singapore, Hong Kong and Mainland China, and speaking
fluent Mandarin. Given this special vision of the market, we asked
what his key mission will be at Vinexpo Hong Kong.
Our key goal is to make the wine
business community in Asia know
that Vinadeis is the biggest French
winery, because no-body seems
to know that. It’s a big showcase
for us to show what makes the
difference – that we have around
20,000 hectares of vineyards.
We are totally vertically integrated.
We control the maturity and
harvest, we crush our own grapes,
we bottle them and market them
and we go and see the customers
ourselves. Nobody else in France
can claim to have a similar
structure on this kind of scale. We
have been building this over the
past four years, so Vinadeis is a
newcomer in the industry, but it
has many “old roots”, and the way
we have built it in the past four
years has made us the number one
winery in France, and we want to
say that.
In Asia, Vinexpo Hong Kong is the
good showcase for us, because
the job of tracking the professionals
is done, it’s at the right time of the
year, and the quality of the show
is good. It’s the cornerstone of
our regional strategy. It’s a good
opportunity to meet most of our
customers and new prospects in
one place. In fact the show has
two objectives for us. On the one
hand, it showcases our global
evolution – from 130-million
Euros to 300-million Euros in just
four years time. And the second
objective is a team building and
image-building process for our
own team. More than 20 people
from our team are attending
Vinexpo, and the global relaunch
evening for the Cordier brand saw
about a hundred people gathered
together.
What’s changing in the way wine
is being marketed today and how
are you adapting to this?
In different countries and zones,
changes happen in different ways,
however overall we are very
motivated. We are putting a lot
of resources into market studies,
consumer understanding and
getting close to our customers.
To market wine, you first have to
understand the consumers, and
they differ greatly from Central
China to Singapore. We are also
investing a lot in our network in
Asia. Four years ago we had
nobody here taking care of our
product or brand. Today we have
more than 25 people – mostly
from China, Japan and Singapore
– pushing our brands through our
own subsidiary companies, and
we have grown the business from
a couple of million Euros in 2010
to almost 30 million in 2016 •
Chianti Classico Celebrates
300 th Anniversary
Three hundred years have passed
since the defining of the production
area for Chianti Classico: the
world’s first wine territory.
The Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico
will be celebrating this important
and historic achievement with a
series of special events throughout
the year.
It was on 24 th September 1716
that the Grand Duke Cosimo III de’
Medici decided to issue a notice
to define the boundaries of some
particularly well‐suited areas to the
production of fine quality wines, for
the first time in history.
All the “Three‐hundredth” events will
be marked by a new logo created
especially for this occasion, a visual
years of Chianti Classico in a single
One Grape, One Territory
Piccini Launches First Vintages from New Sicilian Estate
ADVERTORIAL
2016 marks the launch of the first vintages
from Torre Mora, the Piccini family’s new
estate in Sicily, in the Etna DOC area.
Founded in 1882 in Tuscany, Italy,
Piccini is fast establishing itself as one
of the world’s most innovative wineries,
redefining Italian wine while still
upholding traditional methods. Located in
Castellina in Chianti, one of the 8 cities of
Chianti Classico Area, Piccini is the most
distinctive, dynamic and innovative family
owned Italian wine company. The wines
are grounded in tradition yet have an
innovative, charming and fun personality,
providing a bold and exciting choice for
consumers.
Mario Piccini, fourth generation in the
family estate, explains the new vintages:
“The philosophy of Torre Mora is one
grape, one territory. We are inspired
by the perfect match between Nerello
Mascalese and Etna and we are
passionate about making wines that
tell with every sip the story of the local
grape thriving on the slopes of an active
volcano.”
In addition to the estates from the South
of Italy, the family’s owned estates in
Tuscany, – Villa al Cortile in Montalciano,
Valiano in Chianti Classico and Tenuta
Moraia in Maremma and Bolgheri Doc
– propose a high quality portfolio of
wines dedicated to the trade market,
specialized wine shops and restaurants.
Piccini also has important investments
in the South of Italy with the acquisition
of two new estates: Regio Cantina, in
Venosa, Basilicata, 12 ha of vineyards
dedicated to exclusive production of
Aglianico del Vulture and Torre Mora, in
Sicily (11 ha of vineyards).
Piccini today is one of the biggest players
in Italy, ranking in top 30 biggest Italian
producers with an annual production of
14.2M bottles. Under the leadership of
Mario and Martina, Piccini relies on a
team of young professionals in Italy and
strong partners abroad for its growing
distribution network that already spans an
impressive 75 countries.
Hong Kong Gets The French “Seal” of Approval
If you’re looking for great French food in Hong Kong, one of Asia’s most cosmopolitan cities, a fun idea is
Serge et le Phoque (Serge and the Seal), in the Wan Chai district – close to the convention centre. To get
an “inside look” at where to go in Hong Kong, we asked the restaurant’s director, Charles Pelletier, what
it is that makes this city so special as far as he is concerned.
Charles Pelletier
Director, Serge et le Phoque
I’ve lived in Hong Kong and Indonesia for a number of years
and ultimately decided to come back to Hong Kong and
start my restaurant business here. The city is vibrant and fastpaced,
and what makes it special for me is the economic
freedom which has allowed me to open my business with
ease and enabled me to import quality ingredients and
wine so that we can do what we love! I also love how
diverse the city is. You meet so many different people from
all over the world, some stopping through others settling
down permanently.
Do you have a favourite restaurant and/or wine bar
(apart from yours of course!)?
I love La Cabane and 121BC, both in Central. They’re
both small bite, wine bar restaurants with great ambiance,
and you really feel like home when you’re crammed into the
small space. Both restaurants are great locations for a quick
bite or a leisurely hangout with friends. I also really enjoy
the local Chinese restaurants in Wanchai, which is near to
my restaurant. I stop in for a bowl of hot noodles or some
Chinese barbeque all the time.
Can you suggest a “must” for those on a first visit to the
city?
The Peak on a clear day is the ultimate must visit in Hong
Kong, even with the long queues and tourist crowds. You
really get a sense of the city’s density and scale from atop;
it’s truly breathtaking. It’s also beautiful to visit in the evening
with the city lights. Hong Kong is the only city in the world
with this view. Another must, which sounds cliché, is a
tram ride through the city. You get to juxtapose the city’s
THE WANCHAI
MARKET IS AN UNUSUAL
EXPERIENCE BECAUSE
YOU REALLY SEE AND
FEEL THE CITY’S SPIRIT
BUSTLING THROUGH
FROM DAY TO NIGHT
magnificence from atop by a ride winding through the
dense streets.
Can you recommend an unusual place for the visitor to
discover?
The Wanchai market is an unusual experience because
you really see and feel the city’s spirit bustling through from
day to night. The sights and smells are intoxicating and
unique to such an urban metropolis. You’ll find the butcher
hacking away at a whole side of pig, and turn the corner
to find yourself at a tiny hidden coffee shop serving artisan
espresso. How special is that?
Another unusual visit is to the numerous different beaches in
Hong Kong. That’s also a surprise to most visitors because
many people know Hong Kong as just a dense city, but if
you go out just 20 minutes, you end up finding the most
beautiful hidden beaches that really turn out to be mini
getaways on the weekends.
