Dwij Kanai’s ever green Mahua
is now on the silver screen. With
Rowshan Ara Nipa’s script and
direction, sensational Dhallywood
actor Porimoni, who is also a coproducer
of Mahua Sundori, stars
as the lead character of the film.
Based on a folktale Mymensingh
Geetika, the story of Mahua
Sundori revolves around a theatre
troupe, where Chobi (Porimoni)
always is the centre of attraction
for the audience. An expatriate
named Sumit falls in love with
Chobi depicting Mahua in their
drama, while enjoying one of the
troupe’s shows. Sumit approaches
the diva and tells her about his
feelings for her. The actress starts
hanging out with the ‘Miyar
Beta’ and takes financial favour
in exchange. But in course of
events, the duo falls in love with
each other and the story takes an
unexpected turn.
The government grant
awarded film also has Sumit,
Joyraj, Sadek Bacchu, Suchorita,
Saju, Hafiz, Mamunur Rashid
in its cast. Mahua Sundori was
released on small screen and
aired on Channel i yesterday.
Legendary singer Runa Laila has
lent her voice to a playback song
for the feature film. •

13 Reasons Why
WHAT TO WATCH

Hannah Baker
(Katherine Langford),
a high school teen,
commits suicide
and leaves 13 audio
cassettes and a
map behind- each
assigned to a person
who is somehow
responsible for her
suicide. All 13 people
are held responsible
in these tapes. The
list includes her
classmates, seniors
and faculty members
of Liberty High.
Everyone gets their
turn to listen to the
tapes one by one. The
deal is to pass them
to the next person.
Clay Jensen (Dylan
Minnette), one of the
13 people on the list,
is a nerdy Star Wars
fanatic who secretly
had a crush on
Hannah. The story starts when
Clay gets his hands on the tapes.
The story telling is mysterious,
painting an intriguing picture
with a series of flashbacks from
different timelines as Hannah
keeps on narrating. It could have
been another high school drama
about bullies and victims, jocks
and nerds, popular girls and
weirdos, basketball matches and
high school parties, instead it’s a
dark story about the complexities
of relationships in a teenager’s
life. One of the reasons the
show is so popular is because
the incidents are relatable to
its viewers. It’s like everyone
has met a Hannah Baker or a
Justin Foley (Brandon Flynn)
in their lives. This challenging
story could also encourage
parents to start conversations
with their children who are in
their teens about bullying,
isolation and depression.
The show conveys a
well-intentioned message
about treating people with
respect and asking for help
when we need it. Although
it has picked up some
controversies along the way
as some suicide prevention
experts say the series could
send wrong messages to
some sensitive teens.
Clay and Hannah, the
two main characters played
by Minnette and Langford,
are convincing to their
roles. Katherine Langford,
who also happens to be
a YouTuber, takes the
spotlight though. Christian
Navarro who plays Tony,
is surely to be noticed not
just because of his leather
jackets, vintage car and
kickass hair-style but also
because of his intense
acting skills. Even the
rest of the cast like Alisha
Boe, Brandon Flynn, Miles
Heizer, Justin Prentice are pretty
good and leave an instant impact.
Originally it was planned to
be a movie with Selena Gomez
in the lead role but ended up
as a TV series and Gomez is the
executive producer. Based on the
2007 novel by the same name by
Jay Asher, 13 Reasons Why has
already been acknowledged as
Netflix’s most popular original
drama series. •
