The People
There is perhaps no more “human” product on
earth than wine or fine spirits. When moving
from stand to stand at Vinexpo, the story is
always the same, and always different. It’s
always the same from the point of view that
the story of each individual wine or spirit is
the intimate story of a person or a family…
a vision, and an exploit. Thus, each one is
as different, original and enthralling as the
people themselves. It’s a labour of love, and
of course as we look deeper, we understand
that every person playing a part in the
production of the product adds just a little bit
of their soul each time.
The same is true for the sommelier – again a
role that is not just about having an intricate
knowledge of the essences that make up
the product, but more about understanding
the person facing them at the table: the
consumer. Again, as so beautifully outlined
by Paz Levinson – Best Sommelier of
Americas (Page 7), who says that for her,
what’s important is communicating what
she has learned. Indeed, she says she loves
the contact with the client at the restaurant,
because we never know what questions the
customer will ask.
This humble attitude is, I believe, what moves
people – consumers – to truly appreciate,
or even love wine. It’s all about “getting it
right at the right time, and making it special”.
That’s what Vinexpo is all about.
