day, therefore, after his arrival he went to the lord of the<br />

castle, for the purpose of taking leave; but the good<br />

knight would not allow him to depart, pressing him to<br />

prolong his stay, a request in which Basilissa joined, and<br />

which Julian found himself quite unable to withstand.<br />

Some days after, there was a great feast at the castle,<br />

and Julian sang at the table and played such sweet melodies<br />

that all were enraptured. On the following morning<br />

a splendid joust was to be held, of which, when Julian was<br />

apprized, his old passion rose within him, and he prayed<br />

and he bore himself so gallantly<br />

that the prize was awarded to him in preference to every<br />

other. With equal bravery he conducted himself in a feud,<br />

in which his host was shortly afterwards engaged, and vv^ho<br />

at length conceived such a regard for him that he gave<br />

him his only daughter, the beautiful Basilissa, in marriage.<br />

Shortly after these events his father-in-law died, and Julian<br />

became lord of the castle and surrounding country.<br />

The remembrance of the dreadful prediction was, however,<br />

never absent from his mind, and fervent as were his<br />

longings to see his parents again, he never ventured even<br />

to ask tidings of them, fearing always that the words of<br />

the hart might prove true. To free himself from this depressing<br />

thought, he had recourse to his former pastime,<br />

the chase.<br />

To Julian's parents the loss of their son was a severe<br />

blow. Their happiness was at an end, and they finally<br />

resolved to seek him, and not to return till they had found<br />

him.<br />

Clad as pilgrims, they set out on their wanderings<br />

they went from province to province, from city to city,<br />

from village to village, everywhere inquiring after their<br />

lost son, but no one could give them any tidings. At<br />

length they arrived in Belgium. When straying in the
