which he found the fire was a delusion. The fright^ however,<br />

taught him a lesson, and from that time no one has<br />

disturbed the Onnerbankissen in Fogedshoog.<br />

THE SUBTERRANEAN POTTERS.<br />

On the Morsumkliff in Silt are found a great quantity<br />

of all kinds of smith's and potter's ware, in the shape of<br />

pipes, boxes, balls, pots, etc. On Silt they call them<br />

Onnererskpottjiig (subterranean crockery ware), on Amrum,<br />

Traaldaasker (Troll-boxes), because they are made<br />

by the Underground folk.<br />

In Holstein it is believed that the corn found in the<br />

urns from the old graves, thrives, when sown in the fields<br />

and gardens, better than any other. Milk also becomes<br />

richer and yields more butter when it has stood in such<br />

pots. If the poultry drink out of them, they will not become<br />

ill.<br />

THE UNDERGROUND SMITH.<br />

A man riding one morning past the Dreiberge, on the<br />

road between Apenrade and Jordkirch, heard smiths there<br />

at work, and cried out that he wished they would make<br />

him a chafF-knife. In the evening, when he was returning,<br />

he actually found lying on the hill a spick-span new<br />

knife. He laid down as much money as was equivalent<br />

to the usual cost of such a knife, and took it with him. It<br />

proved to be of excellent temper and keenness ; but<br />

wounds caused by it were incurable.<br />

KETTLES BORROWED.<br />

Close to Geltorf near Sleswig there is a hill called the<br />

Hochberg, and hard by is another, the Brehochberg.<br />

These were inhabited by underground people.<br />
