Focus on 

It may feel like you’ve been in 

your job forever, but Lisa 

Canning’s Romford company has 

been in her family for at least 

eight generations – if not longer. 

Lisa runs furniture business Abbey Antiques/The 

Abbey Group, in Maldon Road, with brother Lee 

Cannings, which can be traced back to their 

ancestors in Germany in the early nineteenth 

century. But the siblings believe it could have 

started life as long as 200 years earlier. Mumof-two 

Lisa said: “My ancestors were cabinet 

makers from Alsace-Lorraine and moved to the 

UK, where they changed their name from 

Herrman to Harman at the outbreak of the First 

World War. My mum remembers hearing as a 

child about ancestors from 300 years ago who 

were in the trade.” 

Lisa’s mum Anne Cannings, 69, was recruited 

as a secretary for the company by her father at 

the age of 17. Anne said: “I come from a long 

line of wood craftsmen – we’ve probably got 

sawdust in our veins. My great-grandfather, 

Arthur Charles Harman, was a traditional 

cabinet maker alongside his four brothers 

based in Old Ford Road, Hackney, and was well 

established amongst the large shops. He was 

well respected as he was a true cabinet maker 

and was an expert in his field.” 

Widow Anne remembers the business’ first 

Romford factory, opening in Moss Road, before 

it was lost in a devastating fire in 1979. 

“Everything went up in smoke,” she said, “but 

we worked at home, from barns from 

workshops till we opened in Maldon Road. I am 

so proud of the family heritage, and it means 

the business can never fail, we can’t let it. There 

are too many people upstairs judging us.” 

But twelve years ago, centuries of family toil 

could so nearly have come to an end when the 

shop faced closure after cheap furniture 

imports from China saturated the market. It 

was then former City worker Lisa, 42 who had 

previously no interest in the trade, decided she 

couldn’t let so much history be lost. The former 

personal PA turned the direction of the business 

from furniture making to restoration. “I knew I 

would have to take over the involvement of the 

company one day but it originally had no real 

interest to me,” she admits. 

“My only love for it was the history. I was still 

enjoying the high life, but when it came to the 

crunch I was happy to step up to the task.” 

Now Lisa’s children Lavinia, just turned nine, 

and Cameron, soon to be seven, are preparing 

themselves to lead a ninth generation in the 

business. “They do a little hand-sanding and 

staining,” said proud gran Anne. 

“they are our future.”

How to improve your memory 

Top tips to help you recall information from your brain 

Every single one of us has limitless memory 

capacity so storage isn't the issue, it’s accessing 

the information in our memories that’s the 

tricky part. Not only is recall difficult, but it also 

affects how our peers perceive us. We think of 

the person who remembers details, dates, 

names, specifications as smart and organised. 

We retrieve information on an unconscious 

level, bringing it into your conscious mind at 

will. To help you access your memory follow 

these simple tasks. 

Convert words to pictures 

This essential tip works for two reasons: First, 

we naturally remember visual cues better than 

words, and second, the more senses you involve 

in learning or storing something, the better you 

will be at recalling it. Say you need to 

remember to submit a proposal to a client at 

10pm for a meeting the next day. You commit 

your task to memory by visualising your 

proposal, a stack of papers on top of an alarm 

clock that reads 10pm. The trick here is to make 

the picture vivid. So visualise an alarm clock 

with 10pm flashing and the words proposal. 

Use memory spots 

Think of physical places that you regularly 

occupy such as your car, desk, armchair. 

Mentally put the picture in one of those spots. 

E.g. Put the proposal on the alarm clock (a 

visual reference from the previous tip) on the 

hood of the car. Committing something to 

memory and mentally placing it where you’ll 

see it is the equivalent of putting a note on the 

front door so you’ll see it when you leave for 

work in the morning. As you continue to use 

this technique, you’ll become accustomed to 

checking with yourself: Should there be a 

reminder on the bonnet of my car?

You’ve created your mental picture of the 

proposal on an alarm clock, and you’ve put it 

on the hood of your car 

where you’ll “see” it. But 

what if you also need to 

remember that you’ve 

promised three pricing 

options for the proposal, 

you’ve offered to include

that your client may need, 

and you’ve also decided that you need to invite 

this client to your annual BBQ? Stack your 

pictures, remembering that these pictures need 

to be as vivid as possible so they’ll stick.

for remembering 

information that is 

otherwise quite difficult to recall: A very simple 

example is the '30 days hath September' rhyme 

for remembering the number of days in each 

calendar month.

and then imagine those people eating burgers 

(BBQ). That’s everything you need to 

remember, all stacked up and sitting on the

Use rhymes 

If I were to ask you where the rain in Spain 

stays, you’d have an answer right away. Mainly 

in the plain, right? The fact is, the mountains of 

Spain see more rain than the plains do, but 

everyone who’s seen My Fair Lady will answer 

Work specifically on names 

It’s worth spending some time to create a 

specific framework to help you remember 

names. Make a list and come up with a picture 

association for each name. You may like to 

picture a motorbike for a Mike or a crown for a 

Richard (the Lionhearted). Next time you meet 

again you should be able to see the visuals in 

your head and associate the name to them.

MAYFLOWER PERFORMING ARTS 

The Mayflower 

organisation has 

been based in 

Billericay since 

1973. Over the 

years, the group has 

evolved into 

performing arts, 

and now focusses 

on the unique 

phenomenon, 

Winterguard. 

Winterguard encompasses a variety of 

dance styles together with equipment 

leading to an exciting production requiring 

skill, strength, stamina and teamwork! 

Mayflower is well respected for their 

achievements in the UK and 

internationally, having placed 8th in the 

world championships in 2016. 

Membership starts from 5 years upwards, 

and no experience is necessary. Our 

youngest group this year performed to Box 

Trolls and placed second in national 

competition. For some it was less than a 

year since beginning their training! 

Our juniors were ‘Lost Boys’ and wowed the 

crowds with their interpretation of this 

Peter Pan classic, also placing second. Our 

A guard, defending 2016 UK champions, 

retained their title with a show about 

leaving their mark on those around them. 

Our eldest groups show was set at the 

‘Mayflower Bakery’ and had the crowd on 

their feet admiring their antics, and taking 

the overall UK championship title. 

We are a registered charity, all our award 

winning staff give their time as volunteers, 

keeping membership costs to a minimum. 

We always need new members to help us 

keep Billericay and surrounding area’s 

name in the spotlight!
