Unite against Dementia this Spring<br />
Dementia is set to be the 21st century’s<br />
biggest killer and could affect us all.<br />
Someone develops dementia every three<br />
minutes and too many are facing it alone,<br />
without adequate support. We urgently<br />
need to find a cure, improve care and<br />
offer help and understanding for people<br />
affected. Over the next couple of months<br />
we’ve got big plans to raise awareness and<br />
vital funds to support the 850,000 people<br />
in the UK with dementia, which includes<br />
8000 people in <strong>Northampton</strong>shire.<br />
During April, we’ll be focussing on the<br />
scale of dementia, which continues to<br />
grow. It is predicted that by 2021, one<br />
million of us will have dementia, and two<br />
million by 2051.<br />
Dementia doesn’t care how old you are.<br />
It’s caused by diseases of the brain so it’s<br />
not an inevitable part of ageing. In fact,<br />
more than 40,000 people with dementia<br />
in the UK are under 65. In <strong>May</strong>, we want<br />
everyone across <strong>Northampton</strong>shire to<br />
take action and unite against dementia by<br />
taking part in Dementia Awareness Week<br />
(14-20 <strong>May</strong>). Events will be held across<br />
the county and region.<br />
A few weeks later we’ll be urging everyone<br />
to come together and unite against<br />
dementia by taking part in Cupcake Day (15<br />
<strong>June</strong>). Whether you’re a baking pro or a<br />
shop bought lover, we want you to take part<br />
in Cupcake Day and raise money to support<br />
the fight against dementia.<br />
Last year, dedicated Cupcakers around the<br />
country united to raise a mighty £330,000<br />
against dementia. That’s more than enough<br />
to fund 11 PhD researchers for a year, giving<br />
them the opportunity to undertake vital,<br />
potentially lifesaving work. <strong>Local</strong>ly, we had<br />
nearly 350 people sign up in the<br />
<strong>Northampton</strong> postcode area.<br />
This year we want to raise even more. By<br />
joining together for Cupcake Day 20<strong>17</strong>,<br />
you’ll not only be helping to create a better<br />
world for people affected by dementia<br />
today, but also to find a cure for tomorrow.<br />
