ACTRESS’ PORTRAIT
Katharina Wackernagel has chosen Godot, a local café, for our
meeting. She’s wearing a bright red dress, sitting right by the door and
looking exactly as she does on her publicity photos. I, of course, fail
to see her as I barrel inside to find a plug. Because if I don’t then the
battery on my laptop will ensure this interview is good for, oh, ten
minutes! But I’m lucky. I find one, get set up, and then wait. Shortly
afterwards, we have one of those mobile phone conversations where
Katharina Wackernagel was born in 1978 in
Freiburg. She made her film debut in Soenke Wortmann’s
Das Wunder von Bern and from there moved into
television, appearing in, amongst others, Kaspar
Heidelbach’s Das Wunder von Lengede and Dror
Zahavi’s Die Luftbruecke. In 2004 she appeared as
Joe in Catharina Deus’ film Die Boxerin. For her performance
in the lead role in the very successful TV event
movie Contergan (dir: Adolf Winkelmann) she received
several national and international awards, amongst
them the FIPA d’Or and the Bavarian Film Award 2008,
for Best Actress. She also picked up another Bavarian
Film Award, again for Best Actress, for Andreas Senns’
Mein Moerder kommt zurueck. In 2009 she
appeared in the ARD two-parter Mit Glanz und
Gloria (dir: Dieter Wedel) and the ZDF post-war
drama Abschied in der Nacht. This autumn she
is appearing in the films Der Fuersorger (dir:
Lutz Konermann) and Résiste – Aufstand der
Praktikanten (dir: Jonas Grosch). Her other television
appearances include Der Vulkan (dir: Uwe
Janson) and the film adaptation of the bestseller Eisfieber
(dir: Peter Keglevic).
