A Complete Line of Convectors<br />

<strong>Trane</strong> architectural radiation convectors<br />

are ideal for heating small areas in<br />

modern commercial, institutional or<br />

industrial buildings. These areas include<br />

offices, apartments, entrances and<br />

restrooms. There are wall-hung, floorstanding,<br />

semi-recessed and<br />

fully-recessed models.<br />

Available for hydronic or steam heating,<br />

<strong>Trane</strong> convectors can be used in<br />

combination with wall fin to allow the<br />

use of one source when designing a<br />

radiation heating system. (See <strong>FIN</strong>-<strong>DS</strong>-1<br />

for wall fin applications.) A consistent<br />

cabinet design matches wall fin<br />

enclosures. The linear styling blends<br />

well with virtually every architectural<br />

design.<br />

Convectors are an effective heating system for small areas. The attractive styling<br />

blends with an architectural design.<br />

Channelized hinge mounting permits<br />

the front panel to be raised for easy<br />

service and cleaning.<br />

Quick-opening fasteners make it easy<br />

to open the front panel.


Panel Construction Features<br />

The front panel is constructed of 14 or<br />

16-gauge steel. Channelized hinged<br />

mounting and quick-opening fasteners<br />

make it easier to open and raise the<br />

front panel for cleaning and servicing.<br />

The bottom edge of the panel is rolled<br />

back so it is less likely to be dented.<br />

Units can be installed before the walls<br />

are plastered. In fact, the mounting<br />

channel of a unit can serve as a plaster<br />

stop.<br />

The element floats freely on a steel<br />

support assembly, allowing for<br />

expansion and contraction.<br />

Access doors are available.<br />

The front panel swings up for easy access.<br />

Wall-Hung Convectors<br />

These units keep floor or carpeting free<br />

of dust-gathering corners. They are<br />

available in front outlet, sloping top<br />

outlet and extruded grille top outlet<br />

styles.<br />

Floor-Mounted Convectors<br />

A floor model is available in the same<br />

outlet styles as the wall-hung model. It<br />

can also be ordered with integral inlet<br />

grilles which help protect the unit<br />

interior. The front panel can be<br />

removed easily to simplify cleaning.<br />

Recessed Convectors<br />

Recessed units take heating equipment<br />

completely out of the room. With fronts<br />

finished to blend smoothly with wall<br />

surfaces, semi-recessed and fullyrecessed<br />

units provide uninterrupted<br />

compatibility with modern interiors.<br />

Wall mounted recessed unit.<br />

One-piece recessed unit front panels<br />

bolt to the enclosure box, not to the<br />

wall. The sponge rubber gasket seals<br />

against air leakage and prevents wall<br />

streaking.


A rugged mechanical fin-tube bond<br />

helps assure durability and long life.<br />

Die-formed aluminum fins are<br />

mechanically bonded to copper tubes.<br />

The tubes are also mechanically<br />

bonded to brass headers with the ends<br />

rolled back in a boiler tube style.<br />

Only the brass headers rest on end<br />

bracket tabs of the support assembly.<br />

The element assembly floats freely<br />

during expansion and contraction,<br />

relieving the fin-tube portion of any<br />

strain. Support assembly expansion<br />

and contraction is absorbed by vertical<br />

brackets. There is no direct contact with<br />

the cabinet and end panels allowing<br />

maximum heat transfer to be achieved.<br />

Positive Temperature Control<br />

An efficient damper is mounted on the<br />

element. The damper reduces unit<br />

capacity by 70 percent. The bead chain<br />

control system is jam-resistant. The<br />

control knob is mounted on the outlet<br />

grille.


Selection<br />

Procedure<br />

Hot Water Systems<br />

The rating of convectors in a hot<br />

water system is determined by<br />

average water temperature,<br />

temperature drop and inlet air<br />

temperature. Tables PD-7 through PD-<br />

30 contain <strong>Trane</strong> convector ratings at<br />

10, 20 and 30 F temperature drops<br />

and average water temperatures with<br />

65 F entering air temperature.<br />

Steam Systems<br />

The rating of convectors in a steam<br />

system is determined by steam<br />

pressure and entering air<br />

temperature. Tables SP-1 through<br />

SP-4 contain <strong>Trane</strong> convector ratings<br />

with 1 psi steam and 65 F entering air<br />

temperature. Refer to Table PAF-2 for<br />

steam correction factors above onepound<br />

gauge.<br />

All ratings are in accordance with<br />

provisions of Commercial Standard<br />

CS 140-47.<br />

Heating Effect<br />

Convector capacity ratings in this<br />

catalog represent condensation<br />

capacity increased by the percentages<br />

shown in Table PAF-3. This is in<br />

accordance with provisions of<br />

Commercial Standard CS 140-47.<br />

Rating of Units Longer and Higher<br />

Than Standard<br />

Rating of units longer than standard is<br />

determined by extrapolating from<br />

published rating tables. Ratings for<br />

units above 38-inches high are about<br />

five percent higher than the highest<br />

standard convector.<br />

Effect of Grilles on Ratings<br />

Shown in Table PAF-4.<br />

Two Elements in a Cabinet<br />

The rating of a standard convector is<br />

not materially increased by placing two<br />

elements, one above the other, in a<br />

cabinet.<br />

Conversion Factors<br />

Btu to EDR Table PAF-5 permits<br />

selection of convectors for hot water<br />

systems directly from steam rating<br />

tables after heat losses have been<br />

calculated in Btu. For example, assume<br />

a forced hot water system with room<br />

heat loss of 8,000 Btu. The average<br />

water temperature is 190 F at 20 F<br />

temperature drop. From Table PAF-5 the<br />

Btu per square foot of steam capacity<br />

is 160. Dividing 8,000 by 160 equals 50<br />

square feet EDR. The required<br />

convector can then be selected from<br />

the steam rating table.

General<br />

The contractor shall furnish and install<br />

<strong>Trane</strong> convectors as indicated and<br />

scheduled on the plans. All ratings shall<br />

be in accordance with Commercial<br />

Standard CS 140-47. Units shall be<br />

installed in a neat and workmanlike<br />

manner in accordance with the<br />

specifications and the manufacturer’s<br />

recommendations.<br />

Heating Elements<br />

Convector elements shall be<br />

constructed of copper tubes expanded<br />

and rolled into cast brass headers,<br />

aluminum fins, steel side plates and fin<br />

tube supports.<br />

Fins shall have integral fin collars which<br />

space the fins and provide a fin-to-tube<br />

surface firmly bonded to the tube by<br />

mechanical expansion of the tube to<br />

help assure durability, eliminate the<br />

noise from loose fins and assure<br />

performance at cataloged ratings.<br />

All elements shall withstand 100<br />

pounds air pressure factory tested<br />

under water.<br />

Free Standing and Wall Cabinets<br />

Cabinet front and top panels shall be<br />

(14) (16) gauge steel. End panels shall<br />

be no less than reinforced 18 gauge.<br />

Cabinet backs shall be phosphatized,<br />

galvanized; front, top and sides shall be<br />

phosphatized and painted inside and<br />

out with a baked-on commercial primer<br />

paint as standard.<br />

Fronts shall be secured in place by<br />

quick opening front panel fasteners.<br />

Cabinet top line rigidity shall be<br />

provided by a roll-formed channel<br />

section that also permits hinged-type<br />

mounting of the cabinet front panel for<br />

easy access. Access doors are not<br />

required with this construction.<br />

Convector styling shall match fin-tube<br />

enclosure styling. All cabinets shall<br />

have recessed, framed air outlets for<br />

storing linear styling. Top outlet-style<br />

cabinets shall have a bar-type outlet<br />

grille made of extruded aluminum.<br />

Recessed Cabinets — Cabinets shall<br />

have a one-piece (14) (16) gauge steel<br />

front panel. Flanges on enclosure at<br />

sides and top shall serve as plaster<br />

stops. The front shall be sealed against<br />

the flanges with a 3 /8” (10 mm) sponge<br />

rubber to help prevent air leakage and<br />

wall streaking. Front panels shall be<br />

held in place by quick opening front<br />

panel fasteners. Cabinet back and sides<br />

shall be phosphatized galvanized steel.<br />

Front panels shall be phosphatized and<br />

painted inside and out with a baked-on<br />

commercial primer paint as standard.<br />

Color Finishes<br />

All convectors shall be painted with a<br />

baked-on commercial primer paint as<br />

standard. Optional baked-on enamel<br />

color finishes shall be available.<br />

chain-and-knob assembly. In the closed<br />

position, heating capacity is reduced<br />

70 percent.<br />

maximum system effectiveness.<br />

• Bottom Overlap (Four side overlap) For<br />

recessed convectors only to mount<br />

recessed convectors above the floor<br />

with the bottom of the unit overlapping<br />

the wall.<br />

• Tamperproof front panel fasteners, Torx<br />

head with tool.
