INTERESTING
THINGS TO KNOW
ATM Cards – Soon will be a Thing of the Past
ATM service providers and banks are
rushing to install machines that offer bank
customers cardless access to their cash through
their smartphones. Wells Fargo plans to offer
cardless access
on its entire fleet
of 13,000 ATMs.
JPMorgan Chase
has rolled out
a few hundred
ATMs that require
only a smartphone
to carry out transactions.
Payment
Alliance International, the largest provider of
ATM services in the U.S., plans to provide
cardless access on 25,000 machines by the end
of 2017. Cardless ATMs will better protect
against fraud. Cases of card skimming, where
thieves plant a device inside the ATMs card slot
to steal banking information have increased in
recent years. The wireless connection between
a smartphone and an ATM promises to be more
secure, although some early cases of fraud have
already popped up.
Technology – Connecting the Masses
Tech firms are going after a huge new
market, an estimated billion customers are
due to come online for the first time by 2022.
These first timers are mainly in India, China,
Indonesia, parts of Africa and other developing
regions. What’s making this possible are low
cost smartphones, fleets of small satellites that
beam inexpensive, fast internet to anyone in
the world who installs a rooftop antenna. Also
in the works, low cost, solar powered small
antenna for 2G cellular and Wi-Fi to cover the
remote, poorest areas like Rwanda. In addition,
techs are working on internet beaming drones
and super Wi-Fi antennas. Even after this next
billion get connected, there are still billions
more before all the 7.4 billion people on the
planet are connected.
Road Safety – Worst States for Drunk Driving
North Dakota ranked first in a study ranking
states based on a combination of DUI arrests
per capita, percent of fatal crashes that involved
alcohol and the weakness of a states DUI laws
and penalties. Montana was second, followed
by Wisconsin and South Carolina.
Health – A Little Sunshine is Good for You
Sunlight boosts immunity by energizing
infection fighting T cells. The blue light found
in the rays of the sun makes T cells move faster,
so they get to the site of an infection and begin
8 LPT www.TruckDriverMagazines.com
their protective activity more quickly. So, short
sun exposure can be beneficial.
Smartphones – Use the Built-in Protection
Smartphones offer many preventive measures
against hackers, and the protection that’s built
into the mobile devices doesn’t cost you any extra.
Among the built-in protection is the ability
to use a PIN or fingerprint to lock your phone.
In addition, a two-step authentication for e-mail
services, shopping sites, social media apps and
more. The method uses a password plus a onetime
code often texted to the user. And regular
updates to mobile operating systems and apps
that fix security issues.
