Exploring great reading ideas...
Bookseller Deborah Holland from Waterstones
in High Street, Lincoln, recommends nine titles
to get stuck into this summer…
The Detective Dog
by Julia Donaldson
and Sara Ogilvie
Pan Macmillan
(9781509801596)
Nell is a dog with a great
sense of smell. She is Peter’s
dog and can detect anything!
From the whereabouts of lost
clothing or who dispatched
a poo on the gravel. Every
Monday she goes to school
with Peter to listen to the
children reading books. She
loves it until one Monday she
arrives to find the teacher and
children in despair. ALL the
books have gone missing! Will
Detective Nell save the day
and find the culprit? This has
already become a favourite
almost immediately with
me. Not only because of the
subject matter or the rhyming
story but because these two
are a dream team.
Can’t wait to see more from
them.
The Uncommoners –
The Crooked Sixpence
by Jennifer Bell
Random House Children’s Publishers UK
(9780552572507)
This magical debut is one to watch. The
story starts with Ivy and her brother,
Seb, accompanying their Grandma in an
ambulance. Little did they know that this
was the beginning of events that would lead
them to discover another world. A world where ordinary objects
have fantastical powers. A world called Lundinor. A world that
might hold the mystery of Grandma’s forgotten past. This fast
paced adventure is perfect for fans of Harry Potter and I can’t
wait for the next instalment in this trilogy. My eldest daughter was
quiet all day reading it (and under the covers that evening) so a
winner in this household!
Voyage to Magical North
– The Accidental Pirates by
Claire Fayers
Pan Macmillan (9781447290605)
Summer isn’t complete without a
pirate adventure. How about one with
magic thrown in? Brine Seaborne was
abandoned by her parents and left
in service to a grumpy magician. An
accident with the magicians’ shard of
rare starshell forces Brine to flee with the magicians’ apprentice,
Peter, to the sea. Getting captured by pirates is when things get
really interesting. This book really has everything – magic, pirates,
monsters, dragons and acts of heroism aplenty. A page turner for
ages 8 years+. Looking forward to the sequel...
The Bumblebear by Nadia Shireen
Random House Children’s Publishers UK (9781780080154)
Imagine loving honey so much you disguise yourself as a bee so
you could steal it? Norman the bear does just that. He becomes a
giant bee. He even gets accepted at Bee school. However one of
the bees becomes suspicious and he is found out! Will his friends
he forgive him or will he have to buzz of? Brilliant pictures, a
great story and incredibly cute.
