The following individuals
were recognized for their
Deputy Fire Marshal Marty Rice has been with Mauldin FD
since October 1993. Prior to Mauldin, he worked with the
Travelers Rest FD. Rice is transitioning into the important
role of Codes Enforcement and Fire Prevention.
Training Officer Chris Bryant has worked with Mauldin FD
since May 2013. Prior to Mauldin, he served several years
with Piedmont Park FD. Bryant has been promoted as the
Mauldin Fire Department’s first Training Officer, a newly
created position approved by City Council this year.
In keeping with fire service tradition, a family member came
up and pinned the new badge on the uniform coat of each
recipient. We congratulate all three personnel and wish
them the best in their new positions.
CITY OF MAULDIN NAMED A TOP ENTERPRISE
FRIENDLY CITY
BB&T. Verizon Wireless. MP Husky. Over the past few weeks Mauldin has been highly
favored with announcements of corporations locating to and expanding within the city.
The Palmetto Promise Institute released rankings that support the surge of business
activity taking place in Mauldin. The Palmetto Promise Institute, a non-profit research
organization based in South Carolina, ranked
South Carolina cities that ensure business
success and protect the entrepreneurial spirit.
Mauldin’s overall score was the second highest
in South Carolina.
In the face of an increasingly competitive global
marketplace, a community’s ability to attract
and retain businesses plays an absolutely vital
role for a healthy economy. With their report, the Palmetto Promise Institute attempts
to fill a void. Adam Crain, a research assistant for the Palmetto Promise Institute,
remarked, “Numerous reports have been produced throughout the years comparing
states to one another in terms of attractiveness to business. We were surprised to find
out, however, that no such comparisons exist among cities within South Carolina.”
The report conducted by the Palmetto Promise Institute examined a number of factors:
Which cities have the best tax policies? Which cities boast better costs of living and
low crime rates? Which cities are experiencing more consistent population and job
growth? These questions and more are answered in this report.
Buoyed by a low business tax burden, relatively high median per-capita income and
comparatively good schools, Mauldin scored a total of 75.07 points out of a possible
100. Mauldin leaders recognize how important these factors and similar economic
efforts are to the wealth and well being of the community.

Mauldin Sports Center
The Mauldin Sports Center is kicking off Thursday Fitness Throw Down! All day April
27th (5:35 a.m. - 7:15 p.m.), will feature a different arrangement of classes for the day.
For this special occassion, instructors have brought back some old (but good!) classes,
like Bosu/Body Bar! Bring unlimited friends for FREE! Keep
an eye out for the Thursday Throw Down flyer for schedule
of classes and events or contact the Mauldin Sports Center
front desk at 864.335.4875. Prizes will be given!
The group fitness schedule will see a few changes starting
mid-April. Due to low attendance, Tuesday’s 9:35 a.m. yoga
sessions and 1:15 p.m. Tai Chi Chih sessions have been
removed. The 4:30 p.m. group fitness time slot on Monday afternoons has also been
eliminated from the schedule. Classes may be added back in the future if the center
sees a high demand with an average of 10 attendees per class.
Now on Mondays the first evening class (5:30 p.m.) rotates between Kickbox TRX’s
Circuit and Kickbox circuit.
Youth Activities
Mauldin’s Baseball/Softball Opening Day
was a great success. The regular season has
started, despite the Spring rain showers. As
usual, the youth sports team would like to
thank their wonderful volunteers for their
support. Flag Football and Lacrosse have
also started practice. The Lacrosse program
is really growing this year and teams will be
participating in tournaments this Spring in
Asheville.

Ray Hopkins Senior Center
The Senior Center is working on a new pictorial directory. This past month, they had
two senior volunteer photographers and a helper recruiting as many participants as
possible. The directory will print mid-April.
Team Angel has two new senior leaders who have jumped right in. So far they have
facilitated others in sending cards, preparing and delivering meals, and organizing the
program. Sixty ladies attended March’s Ladies Tea, led by Tim Womack, the Director
of Aging at the Appalachian Council of Governments. The Digital Photo class visited
Lake Conestee for a day of hands-on instruction. The Elderberries Drama Club has
been working hard on their upcoming play “The Battle for Nachos,” which will be held
on Friday, May 5. The center hosted its bi-annual card tournament with 34 players.
Seniors celebrated Spring with plenty of travel and outdoor activities! Bummin’ Around
took them to the Greenville Farmers Market and to Northgate Soda Shop, they visited
Medieval Times in Atlanta to feast on baby dragon and cheer on their favorite knight,
they hopped on a motor coach and headed to Gibbs Gardens in Georgia, and they
went to a Swamp Rabbits hockey game (which ended in a victory!).
Senior Center staff and members showed their apprecation for those super heros
who support the center in the City of Mauldin by hosting them for a homemade lunch.
Next, seniors will begin working on hand-crafted items to sell at the Mauldin Market.
PARAMEDIC RESPONSE PROGRAM A SUCCESS
A few months ago, the Mauldin Fire Department
began operating Paramedic level first response
to the residents of the City of Mauldin and the
Mauldin Fire Service area in Greenville County.
The objective of the program is to provide
advanced life support care to critically ill patients
prior to the arrival of Greenville County EMS.
To date, the paramedic engine company has
responded to over 200 high acuity medical
responses, approximately 77% of which required
advanced life support intervention. A few of these actions were as follows:
• 7 unresponsive diabetic patients received IVs with Dextrose to correct low blood
sugar conditions
• 2 patients with severe allergic reactions received Benadryl injections
• 6 overdose patients were treated with Narcan
• 6 patients in cardiac arrest were revived and had a return of circulation
This program was made possible through support of Mauldin City Council, which
voted to fund this initiative several months ago without an increase to taxpayers. The
following key employees worked diligently to give this program a successful start:
Capt. Andy McAbee, Lt. Eric Lutz, Lt. Mike Taylor, Firefighter Jacob Looney and
Firefighter Anthony Horton. These individuals were recognized at the Mauldin City
Council meeting March 20, 2017 for their contributions to this program and the
quality of life to the citizens the program serves.
HOT OFF THE PRESS
This month, all firefighters completed refresher training on
roof ventilation techniques, giving them the opportunity to
review safety for operating chainsaws and roof and ground
ladders.
Dr. Holmes getting ready her
citizen ride-a-long..
The department also hosted Dr. Rebecca Holmes, who spent
several hours touring fire stations, learning the daily life of a
firefighter, and spending time with the police department as
part of her Leadership Simpsonville requirements.
