Life By The Tale
Following the success of his novel “Rocks
Don’t Cry,” Swaffham author Cyril Holbrook
has another book out. This is a selection of
short stories under the title “Life by the Tale”.
Some of them have been published before but
most have never been seen. Among them is
the story of a warm-hearted Russian soldier’s
Christmas gift, a life-saving North Sea rescue,
and how an Englishman changes life for an
Oriental call girl. A wild boar hunt, a Fenland
murderer and a car thief operating in Spain
are also among the pages.
Cyril – born in the Fens and now living in Norfolk
– worked as reporter ad sub-editor on several
newspapers including the Eastern Daily Press
and Evening News in Norwich, the Western
Daily Press in Bristol, the Peterborough
Evening Telegraph, Angling Times, the trade
title Tackle and Guns, and edited and wrote
for several magazines in Spain. During 20 years
there he also worked for the local authority
to help the ex-pat population on the Costa
del Sol as part of which he ran his own radio
programme.
“Life by the Tale” is available from bookshops.
Recreating The Rec
Celebration event on Wednesday 5th July between
4-7pm at Haspalls Road Recreation Ground.
Join us for the official launch of the long awaited
Skate Park and MUGA – Multi use games area
Young people, sports groups, and visitors, will
be demonstrating their skills to showcase the
new and existing facilities. Come and watch
the demonstrations and try out the facilities.
Refreshments will be on sale: burgers, hot dogs and
ice cream.
The Town Council has worked hard to raise funds for
these projects, supported by the Iceni Partnership
Youth team and many generous individuals and
businesses in the town. Major funders include
WREN, the Geoffrey Watling Charity, Breckland
District Council Sport and Play Fund.
The contractors who successfully bid for the
contracts, are Wheelscape (for the Skate Park) and
HAGS (for the MUGA). The Skate Park has been in
use for several weeks now, and the new surface and
layout are a great success. Swaffham has a Skate
Park to be proud of. The MUGA should be ready
by mid June and will provide additional play and
sporting facilities.
Come along and make this a day to remember.
