Necton Honours Local Volunteers<br />

Community spirited residents of Necton<br />

were recognised and celebrated at the<br />

Annual Parish Meeting on 27 April by Necton<br />

Parish Council through their new initiative,<br />

Community Spirit Awards.<br />

Seven local people were nominated by<br />

residents and all received a Certificate<br />

presented by guest speaker, Jeremy Goss,<br />

well-known ex Norwich City footballer. From<br />

these nominations, three were selected by<br />

an independent panel for their extra special<br />

contribution to the village. These three stars<br />

each received a certificate and a £40 voucher<br />

for a meal at the Necton Windmill, sponsored<br />

by local company, Town Farm Cars.<br />

3 Star winners<br />

Mrs Babs Hastell for her involvement in<br />

community life since she moved to Necton in<br />

1968. Babs has served on the Parish Council as<br />

Councillor and Chairman; served on Necton WI<br />

as committee member, moving to vice-president<br />

in 1977 and later president. She has been the<br />

village Lollipop Lady, Yoga Club Organiser, The<br />

Thursday Club Organiser, as well as helping with<br />

other groups through the years. She is still an<br />

active member of the Necton Bowls Club. For<br />

30 years she was the Dinner Supervisor at the<br />

village school and looked after The Cubs.<br />

Frank Woodward for his life-long commitment<br />

to the Parish Council, campaigning for<br />

improvements to village infrastructure, managing<br />

village assets and being available at any time of<br />

the day or night for residents. His Parish Council<br />

career spans 32 years. Today, Frank is the Vice-<br />

Chairman of the Parish Council, a member of the<br />

Sports & Social Club committee and a trustee on<br />

the Iceni Partnership in <strong>Swaffham</strong>.<br />

Leonard(Lenny) Luff for his dedication to his<br />

role as the Village Caretaker. One might say he<br />

is doing his job, but in Lenny’s case, he does<br />

much more than ‘just his job’. Lenny, now 84,<br />

has been officially employed by Necton Parish<br />

Council for over six years, although was doing<br />

the job for many years before that. Lenny is out<br />

every day – in his yellow high Vis jacket or vest<br />

– equipped with litter picker stick and bin bag,<br />

walking or cycling his established routes of the<br />

village, making sure everywhere is covered at<br />

least once every week. Lenny’s sunny outlook<br />

on life makes a wonderful difference to those<br />

people he meets out and about in the village<br />

and for some this may be the only friendly face<br />

they see that day.<br />

Merle Boddy Centre<br />

Thank you Candy and Kerry our two Tesco wonders.The<br />

cheese tasta morning went down a storm with everyone,<br />

including staff, not only a lot of new varities to try but a fun<br />

filled time of memories of when cheese was a luxury and<br />

then when cheese was the main stay of every working<br />

man’s sandwiches and cheese on toast was for tea.<br />

Thank you lions for an enjoyable quiz evening; our<br />

lions bars were just yummy. We are fairly consistant<br />

at our rating with holding bottom place at most of<br />

the quizzes, somone has to hold this postion and it<br />

seems to fit us like a glove.<br />

Praise is sometimes not given enough to hard working<br />

hostelries. I want to put in a small way right. The staff<br />

from the Merle Boddy Centre had what can only be<br />

discribed as absolutely scrumish and delighul meal<br />

at the Horse and Groom. Our waitress was helpful,<br />

patient and nothing was too much trouble.This made<br />

our evening out very relaxed and we will definitely<br />

be going again. So to Trudy and your team, thanks.<br />

Another crafty day. These beautiful ladies are ready<br />

for a ball. Can I just ask if any of you crafters have bits<br />

and bobs you don’t want or won’t use we will and<br />

can make use of all your odds and ends. If you can<br />

bring them to the centre, great but if not I will pick<br />

them up ring georgie 01760 724 527.<br />

To the ladies of <strong>Swaffham</strong> evening WI , thankyou for<br />

making my evening so enjoyable, i had a ball, you<br />

really know how to make a meeting swing. I hope<br />

that I came with some useful tips for you to be able<br />

to use in the world of which is dementia also for your<br />

generosity of £123 of which i am very grateful.<br />

We would like to thank Pentney country club for looking<br />

after us so well. Not only was the meal something to<br />

behold, the music great, and the atmosphere was really<br />

welcoming and friendly. We cant wait for our next staff<br />

evening out, which will definitely be with you.
