Necton Honours Local Volunteers
Community spirited residents of Necton
were recognised and celebrated at the
Annual Parish Meeting on 27 April by Necton
Parish Council through their new initiative,
Community Spirit Awards.
Seven local people were nominated by
residents and all received a Certificate
presented by guest speaker, Jeremy Goss,
well-known ex Norwich City footballer. From
these nominations, three were selected by
an independent panel for their extra special
contribution to the village. These three stars
each received a certificate and a £40 voucher
for a meal at the Necton Windmill, sponsored
by local company, Town Farm Cars.
3 Star winners
Mrs Babs Hastell for her involvement in
community life since she moved to Necton in
1968. Babs has served on the Parish Council as
Councillor and Chairman; served on Necton WI
as committee member, moving to vice-president
in 1977 and later president. She has been the
village Lollipop Lady, Yoga Club Organiser, The
Thursday Club Organiser, as well as helping with
other groups through the years. She is still an
active member of the Necton Bowls Club. For
30 years she was the Dinner Supervisor at the
village school and looked after The Cubs.
Frank Woodward for his life-long commitment
to the Parish Council, campaigning for
improvements to village infrastructure, managing
village assets and being available at any time of
the day or night for residents. His Parish Council
career spans 32 years. Today, Frank is the Vice-
Chairman of the Parish Council, a member of the
Sports & Social Club committee and a trustee on
the Iceni Partnership in Swaffham.
Leonard(Lenny) Luff for his dedication to his
role as the Village Caretaker. One might say he
is doing his job, but in Lenny’s case, he does
much more than ‘just his job’. Lenny, now 84,
has been officially employed by Necton Parish
Council for over six years, although was doing
the job for many years before that. Lenny is out
every day – in his yellow high Vis jacket or vest
– equipped with litter picker stick and bin bag,
walking or cycling his established routes of the
village, making sure everywhere is covered at
least once every week. Lenny’s sunny outlook
on life makes a wonderful difference to those
people he meets out and about in the village
and for some this may be the only friendly face
they see that day.
Thank you Candy and Kerry our two Tesco wonders. The
cheese tasta morning went down a storm with everyone,
including staff, not only a lot of new varities to try but a fun
filled time of memories of when cheese was a luxury and
then when cheese was the main stay of every working
man’s sandwiches and cheese on toast was for tea.
Thank you lions for an enjoyable quiz evening; our
lions bars were just yummy. We are fairly consistant
at our rating with holding bottom place at most of
the quizzes, somone has to hold this postion and it
seems to fit us like a glove.
Praise is sometimes not given enough to hard working
hostelries. I want to put in a small way right. The staff
from the Merle Boddy Centre had what can only be
discribed as absolutely scrumish and delighul meal
at the Horse and Groom. Our waitress was helpful,
patient and nothing was too much trouble. This made
our evening out very relaxed and we will definitely
be going again. So to Trudy and your team, thanks.
Another crafty day. These beautiful ladies are ready
for a ball. Can I just ask if any of you crafters have bits
and bobs you don’t want or won’t use we will and
can make use of all your odds and ends. If you can
bring them to the centre, great but if not I will pick
them up ring georgie 01760 724 527.
To the ladies of Swaffham evening WI , thankyou for
making my evening so enjoyable, i had a ball, you
really know how to make a meeting swing. I hope
that I came with some useful tips for you to be able
to use in the world of which is dementia also for your
generosity of £123 of which i am very grateful.
We would like to thank Pentney country club for looking
after us so well. Not only was the meal something to
behold, the music great, and the atmosphere was really
welcoming and friendly. We cant wait for our next staff
evening out, which will definitely be with you.
