The Learning Goal for this assignment is:
Determine appropriate and consistent standards of measurements for the data to be
collected in a survey or experiment.
Notes Section
When the exponent for a figure is 0, the number just stays the same.
-When you make the base number smaller, the exponent must become bigger
-When you make the number bigger, the exponent must become smaller.
For examples:
234.6 ---> 2.346 x 10 2
and
0.0067 ---> 6.7 x 10 -3
Remember!! Sig Figs are always in the form of numbers between 1-9.9 x 10^#
in order to add/subtract sig figs, the expponents of botth figures must be the same.
So for example:
3.5 x 10^6 + 5.8 x 10^5 = ?
You would just need to convert the 1st figure into 35 x 10^5
Once you add the two numbers, you can convert the sum back into scientific notation.
In this case, 40.8 would become 4.08 x 10^6
Similarly, to multiply sig figs, you would multiply the numbers and add the exponents
sperately to find the answer
Fo ex: 3.0 x 10^4 X 4.0 x 10^4 would equal 12 x 10^8
For divison: You would follow the same procedure as above except you would divide and
subtract instead of multiply and add.
