THE REPRESENTATIVE 19 May 2017
SPOR TSSCENE
Great work by Old Collegians
Team beats Shining
Stars in titanic battle
MAXWELL LEVINE
OLD Collegians are the toast of
the town after walking off
victorious in a titanic Premier
League derby against Shining
Stars at the Thobi Kula Indoor
Sports Complex.
The match lived up to all the
pre-match hype as both teams
dished out hard-hitting rugby
from the word go. Stars came
into this match as overwhelming
favourites after winning the last
league match between the two
and dumping OC out of the
tournament last year.
This year the teams played to
a draw in a friendly. Shining
Stars also came into the match
with their confidence sky high as
they were unbeaten in the
league in contrast to Collegians,
who had a shocking start to the
league campaign, losing both
their opening matches.
OC was determined to turn
things around in this match and
get their ailing campaign back
on track. The opening exchanges
were brutal with players going at
each other with enormous
intensity and the collision point
was bone-cracking. Collegians
opened the scoring through hard
man BA Siyobi who bashed his
way over the line for an
unconverted try. Stars hit back
with a scintillating try after Zwai
Nelani carved through the OC
defence to score under the
posts. Sivuyile Mdletye made no
mistake with the conversion and
Stars took the lead at 7-5.
For more than 15 minutes
Stars asserted pressure on OC
by camping in their half. The
intensity was sky-high and the
referee had to send off one
player from each team for an
off-the-ball incident. With spaces
opening up and OC under
pressure, Stars were awarded a
penalty which Mdletye converted
as Stars took a 10-5 lead.
OC were again penalised for
diving into a mall, with Romaine
Flusk sent to the sin bin. With 13
men on the field OC had to dig
deep on defence.
They were awarded a penalty
which was converted to reduce
the deficit to two points at 10-8
at half time.
Collegians came out more
determined in the second half.
They hit first with an unconverted
try by Sean Baartman to
take the lead at 13-10. After
numerous exchanges and their
defence holding firm after
countless attacks by Stars, OC
were awarded another penalty
which was converted to increase
the lead to six points.
Stars kept pushing, but their
efforts were thwarted by a
stubborn OC rearguard. The
introduction of fresh legs by OC
coach Rose Roji did the trick in
the second half. Experienced
scrumhalf Vuyo Ngemtu, Cheslin
Jekels, John Roelfse and Nkomo
Mabona had a huge impact on
the game.
With time running out for the
visitors, ironically it was former
Stars player Nkomo Mabona who
put the final nail in their coffin
by scoring the all-important try
for Collegians that killed off any
matches while OC is seventh
with six points from three
In the Super League, Breakers
narrowly lost 10-8 to Berlin
Tigers. The Mlungisi side put in a
gallant effort away from home
and came away with a bonus
point. Swallows’ unbeaten run
was halted by a spirited Walter
Sisulu All Blacks side after the
students beat them 26-20. Old
Boys continued their unbeaten
run with a 31-5 thrashing of
Cambridge. Ntlaza were also on
the losing side for the first time
when Fort Hare beat them 25-23.
Police were back to their
winning ways with a 29-10 hiding
of Ocean Sweepers. Winter Rose
lost again, this time 10-5 to Buffs
at home. In the Premier League,
Africans continued to impress
with a 19-11 win over Wallabies.
Young Leopards demolished
King Brumbies 45-5, Bussy Boys
won 10-6 against Evergreens and
Ngculu Zebras received all the
points when Ready Blues failed
to travel.
GAMA Construction
finalised the sports
Phumelele Hlathi,
speaking on behalf of
the handover meant that
Hlathi said they had
Gama Construction will
apply for funding and
Principal Edward
school will use the field
for rugby and soccer, for
the under-9, U11 and U15
age groups.”
Valashiya said it would
cost approximately
maintain the field but he
planned to engage with
the Chris Hani and Enoch
Queen’s College first hockey team found lacking against St Andrew’s
AFTER a disappointing weekend away
at Selborne College, the Queen’s first
hockey team hosted St Andrew’s
College from Grahamstown over the
weekend, writes QC first-team coach
Daniel Jackman.
The fixture’s importance lay in the
previous result, a 4-1 win for Queen’s,
a result which SAC would be looking
to remedy when they visited their
regional neighbours.
The match started evenly with both
teams missing opportunities early on.
The pressure mounted on both
defences as a result.
Unfortunately Queen’s defence was
the first to give way. The goals came
in quick succession in the last part of
the first half and as a result, Queen’s
found themselves 2-0 down. This was
not for a lack of trying, however, with
QC’s inability to be anywhere near
clinical in the opponent’s D,
continuing to prevent the home team
from making any marked impact.
Queen’s approached the second half
with a lot more confidence and
showed more fight than they had in
the first half.
What followed in the last minutes
of the second half was nothing short
of the craziest sequence of events.
A succession of inexplicable
defensive errors, by both the
defensive trio and the keeper, saw
three goals tapped in by the SAC
forwards after being ably assisted by
QC players. This drained what little
fight QC had left. In a game that
needed a clinical finisher and a
temperament akin to that of a
semifinal, Queen’s was found wanting
and have now set themselves the
arduous task of climbing a steep
incline.
The rest of the season sees the
team face a mixture of awkward and
difficult opponents with the likes of
Stirling, Grey High, Hudson and
Kingswood to come.
