parcels.” Prestigious Properties was marketing “your
piece of paradise” to those looking for a vacation home or
condo. Turks & Caicos Realty, with Sales Manager Karen
Biker, was offering “property sales and rentals and property
management” with “professional, caring and friendly
service.” Cairsea Services provided “fast, efficient and reliable
freight forwarding and handling services,” along with
Federal Express’s “hassle-free, door-to-door delivery.”
Scotiabank was based in the Town Center Mall, as busy
then as it is today on a payday!
Available for diners was “authentic Chinese cuisine”
at Hong Kong Restaurant, Mexican favorites at Hey
Jose’s, “local and continental food” by European chef
Alfred at Alfred’s Place, and a seafood buffet at Dora’s,
which along with Fast Eddie’s, Bonnie’s Kitchen and
Three Queens were the places to go for native fare. Tasty
Temptation was an expatriate hang-out in the mornings,
serving superb croissants and French pastries. Carib West
provided the “Islands’ finest selection of liquors, beers,
wines, spirits and tobaccos.” Visitors (numbering about
60,000 annually) could purchase t-shirts and souvenirs at
the aptly named Tourist Shoppe.
How things have changed! According to the
Caribbean Tourism Organization, the Turks & Caicos
Islands are now the fastest growing tourist destination in
the Caribbean. And while it seemed to have happened
“overnight” following positive mentions on late-night TV
talk shows, articles in high-profile magazines and postings
on celebrity Instagram accounts, it has actually developed
over years of hard work, cyclical progress, environmental
protection and government policy creation. And, no
doubt, the country’s natural attributes—beautiful beaches,
turquoise waters, comfortable climate—are enhanced by
an upscale, luxury tourism product. Use of the US dollar,
the oversight of the UK as a British Overseas Territory, a
stable political structure, and user-friendly real estate and
banking policies all contribute to the TCI’s appeal.
In fact, TCI hosted some 1,300,575 tourists to its
shores in 2016. And while the majority of arrivals were
cruise-based, 2016 marked an impressive, fifth consecutive
year of growth in stopover arrivals. The Turks & Caicos
Islands Tourist Board underscored that 2016 marked a
record-setting year for the destination, which saw for the
first time some 450,000+ stopover arrivals through the
international airports and fixed based operations. “For a
consecutive year, the destination recorded growth in each
month of the year and within the overwhelming majority
of its major source markets. The growth rate ranged
from a 27.4% increase in stopover arrivals recorded in
