We help students to get their businesses
up and running and provide inspirational
experiences such as our enterprise
conference and guest speaker
programme.
Northern Stars
Our Northern Stars enterprise society
is for students that are serious about
starting their own business. It is full of
opportunities to learn more about what
it takes to start a business, including lots
of chances to network with successful
entrepreneurs and attend seminars and
talks.

HANDPICKED.
Talented IT students Adam Coates and
Amanda Norman have launched their
own businesses while studying Software
Development.
The creative duo took part in a design competition at
college and were chosen to sell their products at the
handPICKED store in intu Metrocentre.
Amanda’s ‘100% Geordie’ and red kite bird designs
were selected to be printed on mugs and keyrings
while Adam developed t-shirt designs using the word
‘Tyne’ and striking illustrations of landmarks from the
riverside as well as the iconic Angel of the North.
The students were able to launch their businesses
thanks to a small start-up loan from Gateshead
College which students pay back in manageable
instalments with any profits used to further develop
their products and business.
Amanda, 18 and from Whickham, said: “This project
really inspired me to start my own business. It’s given
me the opportunity to learn from local experts
about design and business as well as making me
more creative by allowing me to develop my own
ideas and designs.
“Thanks to my course at Gateshead College and
projects like this, I have gained a lot of valuable
experience to build my ability in graphics and
design. This has really paid off because I now have
the opportunity to sell my own products in the
handPICKED store.”

Our intu Metrocentre store is pretty special. It gives our
talented young entrepreneurs the opportunity to test and
market their products and showcase their retail flair.
It's also a place for students to gain valuable work
experience and we employ retail apprentices too.
