Milk<br />
‘And verily in <strong>the</strong> cattle <strong>the</strong>re is a lesson for you. We give you to<br />
drink <strong>of</strong> that which is in <strong>the</strong>ir bellies, from between excretions<br />
and blood, pure milk; palatable to <strong>the</strong> drinkers.’<br />
Qur’\n, an-Na#l, 16:66<br />
Milk is rich in nutrients such as calcium and was <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> preferred drinks<br />
<strong>of</strong> Ras[lull\h r. On <strong>the</strong> night <strong>of</strong> Mi`r\j he was given <strong>the</strong> option <strong>of</strong><br />
ei<strong>the</strong>r drinking milk or wine and he chose milk. Upon this Jibr|l u<br />
said, ‘You have been guided to fi{rah (nature); if you had chosen wine<br />
your Ummah would have been misguided.’<br />
al-Bukh\r|<br />
Anas t narrated that some people were sick and said, ‘O Ras[lull\h,<br />
Give us shelter and food.’ So when <strong>the</strong>y became healthy <strong>the</strong>y said, ‘<strong>the</strong><br />
climate <strong>of</strong> Mad|nah is not suitable for us.’ So Ras[lull\h sent <strong>the</strong>m to<br />
*arr\ with some camels <strong>of</strong> his and said, ‘Drink <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir milk.’ al-Bukh\r|<br />
Ibn `Abb\s t narrated that <strong>the</strong> <strong>Prophet</strong> r said,<br />
‘Whenever one <strong>of</strong> you eats some food he should say, ‘O All\h grant us<br />
blessings in this food and feed us something which is better.’ But when<br />
one <strong>of</strong> you drinks milk he should say, ‘O All\h grant us blessing in this<br />
milk and provide more milk for us’ for indeed <strong>the</strong>re is nothing which<br />
can take <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> both food and drink except milk.’ Ab[ D\w[d<br />
Barley and Talb|nah<br />
Barley was very much liked by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Prophet</strong> r and he consumed it in<br />
various forms such as bread, dough and gruel.<br />
