One last time to shine for Agganis athletes
By Anne Marie Tobin
With the summer season officially
underway, that means only
one thing to some 800 recently-graduated
student-athletes;
it’s time for the annual Agganis
Games, and one final time to play
at the high school level.
This year’s games begin
Sunday morning at Manning
Field in Lynn with the Awards
ceremony at 10, at which time
this year’s Agganis scholars and
Hall of Fame honorees will be
recognized and the participating
athletes will be announced.
The Agganis All-Star Classics
are a sports lover’s delight featuring
some of the region’s best
athletes who will compete in
baseball, basketball, lacrosse,
soccer, softball and, of course, the
granddaddy of them all, football.
For its first 40 years, the
Agganis Football Classic was
the primary fundraiser for the
Agganis Foundation. In 1995, the
Foundation began branching out
into other sports when baseball
was added. It was an appropriate
new addition, considering Harry
Agganis was a first baseman for
the Boston Red Sox. Agganis
starred in football and baseball
at Lynn Classical and Boston
University. He died at the age of
26 in 1955.
The Agganis Games now includes
nine all-star games, jampacked
into a five-day stretch.
But the Agganis All-Star
Classics are more than just
games; they are the major fundraising
vehicle for the Agganis
Foundation’s scholarship pro-
