By Anne Marie Tobin PEABODY — The Peabody girls lacrosse team celebrated a record-setting season with its annual award banquet at the Knights of Columbus Hall June 13. Senior captains Lauren Wolff and Gianna Denisco received Outstanding Player of the Year Awards. Wolff set three individual school records this year. She finished her career as the all-time leader in single season points, (100), single season goals (77) and career points (252). Denisco was rock solid in goal for the Tanners, and also set three individual school records — career saves (620), lowest goals against average (5.95 per game) and all-time best save percentage (60 percent). Senior captains Chloe Gizzi and Kirsten Bradley received Offensive Player of the Year Awards, while junior Alyssa Shashaty received the Defensive Player of the Year Award. The captains of the 2018 team were announced; they are Sarah Buckley, Catherine Manning, Alyssa Saraceni and Alex Houden. The Tanners placed five players on the Northeastern Conference allstar team. Wolff and Denisco were named to the NEC First Team with Wolff taking NEC Offensive Player of the Year honors. Shashaty, Gizzi and Bradley were named to the NEC Second Team. Wolff will continue her lacrosse career at Utica College, while Gizzi will switch sports and play soccer at Bentley University. “We saw our program continue to show progress (against) top teams and leagues in the state,” said coach Dennis DesRoches. “The girls were 6-0 (against Merrimack Valley Conference) teams including a 10-8 win against Lowell in the first round of the tourney.” Peabody was 16-4 during the regular season and advanced to the quarterfinals of the North Division 1 tournament, where they were eliminated for the second straight year by north finalist Woburn (10-7). Last year, Woburn pummeled Peabody 12-2. Desroches said the team, which finished 17-5, can take a lot away from this year’s loss. “We are closing the gap against tourney powers,” said Desroches. “Against Woburn, we were down by only one with six minutes remaining in the game. The girls were competitive against every team we played. In our five losses, the average margin of defeat was by 2.6 goals per game and our defense was immense as we only allowed 10 or more goals in four of 20 regular season games.” The Tanners’ 16 regular season wins was tied for second most in program history. “Overall, it was a great season,” said Desroches. “I am truly lucky to have a great staff (coach David Murphy and coach Kim Frank) and awesome student athletes who put team needs ahead of their own. That’s what makes a team and program successful.” Senior Open brings back special moment By Anne Marie Tobin Things are heating up in Peabody these days and it has nothing to do with weather. The 38th U.S. Senior Open Golf Championship, one of the grandest events in all of golf, is coming to Salem Country Club next week. The tournament, which begins Thursday, June 29 and concludes Sunday, July 2, features 156 of the world’s best senior golfers (age 50 and over) all vying for the right to hoist the Francis D. Ouimet Trophy in front of upwards of 25,000 adoring spectators and millions more watching all across the world on television and on the internet. The field is packed with marquee players and includes the likes of John Daly, Fred Couples, Tom Watson, Bernard Langer, Colin Montgomery and Tom Kite among others, each of whom hopes to leave town with the winner’s share of approximately $700,000 of the $4 million prize purse. The event is expected to pump millions of dollars into the local economy, with restaurants, hotels, B&Bs, local malls and retailers and popular tourist destinations hoping to reap windfall profits. While the practice rounds don’t officially begin until Monday, players and their entourages are expected to begin arriving as early as this weekend to prep for the event. Last Friday, members were busy cleaning out their lockers for the players. “Yes, it’s hard to believe it’s already here, and it really hit when the deadline for clearing out our lockers was upon us last Friday,” said Lynnfield resident Tim Nevils, a member at Salem. “It will be interesting to see who gets your locker, maybe it will be a big name, which would be something.” In golf and life, sometimes it all comes down to being in the right place at the right time. For Dick Blaisdell, that place happened to be his own Western Barber shop at the intersection of Route 1 and Salem Street in Lynnfield, where Blaisdell has spent the past 50 years cutting hair. It was just a normal Thursday in late June of 2001 until a special customer walked through the door. “This fellow walked in asking for a trim,” Blaisdell recalled. “I recognized him right away, it was Bruce Fleisher, who was playing the U.S. Senior Open up the road at Salem Country Club. We ended up having a great conversation about golf and the tour. He was very honest and said he just didn’t hit far enough to make it on tour. “The funny thing was, I believe he was leading the Open and was the only one under par that day, but you never would have known it, as he was just a regular guy. He ended up winning the thing a few days later. I only remember when he was leaving, he asked ‘How the hell do I get out of here with these traffic lights?’ ” Blaisdell got the thrill of a lifetime a couple of days later after closing up the shop at noon. “I promised him I would come and watch him on Saturday, found his group and he spotted me right away,” said Blaisdell. “He called me and a friend of mine, Randy Compton, to watch from inside the ropes. So we ducked under and followed him the rest of the way until a vicious thunderstorm rolled in and play was suspended. It was an incredible experience.” Blaisdell went back to the course for Sunday’s final round to cheer on his new friend. Fleisher on his victory, the golfer promised he would send Blaisdell an autographed picture of him holding the winner’s Ouimet Trophy. “A friend of mine ran into him later that year in Florida and mentioned me, so Bruce sent the picture, as promised,” Blaisdell said. “He was just such a likable and down-toearth guy.” The framed photo is one of many pieces of memorabilia displayed in the barbershop.
