AN
ISOLATED
MOTHERS
JOURNEY
TO
SUCCESS
personal story
W R I T T E N B Y K A R A V A I N A
You started your
business from home to
work around your kids,
but after 6 months you
are struggling to juggle
everything; and to stay
focused on your
business, and life in
general.
I understand you! I’ve
been there too and
sometimes, I still am.
What I disliked most was
the isolation I felt
working on my own as
well as struggling to deal
with a unique and
challenging toddler.
It was supposed to be
fun... right?
It was 3 and a half years ago
when I made the decision to
join a Direct Sales / MLM
company so I could earn some
income whilst I stayed home
with my newborn baby. Little
did they tell me I’d spend
more time trying to build the
business than actually with
my child. This was a company
where I’d met so many
amazing people, who inspired
and motivated me, yet I felt so
isolated at home with my
baby.
I just struggled. I couldn’t put
my finger on what it was or
why, but I just didn’t have my
shit together. Seemingly on
social media everyone
thought my life was good. I
bragged, I posted about the
good times and fun things,
posted the inspirational
quotes that everyone was
sharing on Facebook, yet I
struggled behind closed doors
and couldn’t bring myself to
tell anyone or talk about it.
I had a 5 year old son who was
excelling at school, who was
placid, sensitive and loving that
was easy to parent. But all of a
sudden I also had a 10 month
old who would scream, and
scream, and scream and have
complete meltdowns…….who
knew that Thor could show up
in a 10 month old child and I’d
have to put my Hulk suit on to
contain him.
I wasn’t coping. I’d cry, I’d
scream back, I’d cry again and
then I’d cry some more. He
didn’t scream from hunger, as
he was thriving. It was sheer
determination to break me... or
that’s what I felt anyway. What
I’ve since learnt (as it continued
on but the tantrums and
behavior have improved) is that
he’s a very determined boy to
get his own way and lacks the
verbal language to
communicate.
P E R S O N A L S T O R Y | W B S O C I E T Y . C O M

It was at this time I started
drawing again. Something I’d
do when I was a little girl, in
my room with the music on
because it took me to a
magical place of freedom. It
gave me clarity and a chance
to be me…….and now
FREEDOM of a child I felt I
couldn’t parent. I felt
completely isolated, like
friends didn’t understand me,
a husband that didn’t quite get
it (because I was never the
crying type) and most of all I
didn’t get ME. I didn’t want to
talk about it because who on
earth wants to talk to a mother
that doesn’t have her shit
together. Or so I told myself.
I’m wondering if you’ve ever
felt this way?
I started to create.
I found my passion again.
This was my outlet and I threw
myself into it with all of my
might because it was an escape.
It was at this point I realized I
wasn’t passionate about my
MLM/Direct Sales business. I
had never cared about skin
products, although the results
were fabulous. I just didn’t
have the drive or passion for
the product, so how could I sell
something authentically that I
wasn’t passionate about? I’d
started seeing a psychologist
for help dealing with my
emotions and trying to parent
my child... something I’d
questioned about myself as I
felt I’d failed as a parent if I
needed help. And Jessica of
Hopscotch and Harmony
(https://wbsociety.com/listings
/hopscotch-harmony-childfamily-psychology/)
was the
one to give it to me.
She just got me and I can’t thank
her enough. She suggested to me
a mindfulness approach... and
noticed huge change in both
myself as well as my connection
with son and my family. So what
does one do when they are going
through an emotional
breakdown? They found a start
up company!
I’d fast come to realise that my
life wasn’t going the way I
wanted it to, I lacked
inspiration, wasn’t keeping
appointments and was just not
coping. I’d collated all of my
notes, mindfulness tips, my
drawings etc and as I was a
stationery lover I couldn’t find
something that allowed me to
have all of this information in
one place. Nothing help me stay
guided, motivated, grateful and
calm. So My Mindful Year was
created.
"THIS WAS MY
OUTLET AND
I THREW
MYSELF INTO
IT WITH ALL
OF MY MIGHT
BECAUSE IT
WAS ESCAPE"
"I WORKED DAY IN AND DAY OUT ON MY
NEW FOUND PASSION."
" I ’ D W O R K T I R E L E S S L Y
T H R O U G H T H E N I G H T T O
W R I T E , D R A W , B R I N G I T A L L
T O G E T H E R "
I worked day in and day out on
my new found passion. I’d work
tirelessly through the night to
write, draw, bring it all together.
The people close to me started
to see my happiness again and,
more importantly, believed in
me, my vision and my new
product. I’m a superstitious
person so I researched my lucky
numbers for 2017 and found
that 7 was my number. Not that
it felt like it at the time because
it was also my youngest son’s
birthday. How ironic, the son
that was challenging me the
most, causing me all this
anxiety, tears and emotions
could actually be my lucky
charm.
I researched the market, sat up
late at night reading through
thread after thread on
Facebook groups to learn, i
asked questions, for help, built
relationships & connected with
people. I had prototypes
made & the response when I
started showing people
was amazing. It made me smile
again. .
I researched ways to
launch. Much like any start up
company, funds were lacking to
purchase or manufacture
thousands of units to get it to
market.
"IT WASN’T ALL
SMOOTH SAILING.
I HAD REJECTION.
I HAD PEOPLE
LAUGH IN MY
I’d read about Crowdfunding and looked into it. I
decided it was worth pursuing, & before I knew it I
was knee-deep in launching, but my self-doubt
started to kick in.
FACE"
“What if no one wanted to buy it?”
“What if no one believed in my product or vision?”
I got through it & I launched on the 7th July (7/7,
for good luck) via Pozible, an Australian
crowdfunding platform.
If you don’t know anything about crowdfunding
(depending on the platform you choose), if you
don’t reach your target - you don’t get your funds.
So that was my next worry.
But within 24 hours were
well underway of achieving
our target. I’d set the target
of $7000 dollars to get the
print run off the ground and
5 days later we had reached
that. I was ecstatic.
Considering I’d set the preorders
for 30 days, I had
been overwhelmed that I’d
reach the target so quickly.
It continued on, reaching
approximately $13,500
which allowed us (as a
company) to print more than
required and have more
available to purchase once
we received them.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing. I
had rejection. I had people
laugh in my face. I had
people that just didn’t see
the vision or have the belief
that I did (and probably
because I was also still in a
frame of mind that didn’t
allow me to talk about how
this product helped me
through dark times in my
life) I wasn’t able to
communicate my authentic
story completely…until 12
months later.

I got cracking on all the
processing, migrating of data and
ordering of stock and fast
forward 3 months from the end of
pre-orders they were officially
ready for market and in my hands.
We cautiously ordered hundreds
and hundreds of extras as we
wondered whether we’d
exhausted our warm market,
whether anyone outside of our
friends list would actually want to
purchase one.
"WE’D SOLD OUT
WITHIN 6 SHORT
But they did.
We’d sold out within 6 weeks and
it wasn’t even the end of the year
yet. What a great problem to
have you would think? Well no.
We’d made errors. We hadn’t
factored in GST, freight costs,
ASIC charges, fees charged from
banks and Pozible amongst
others. So, I was reluctant to
order more as with any printing
production there are so many
variables like the style of print,
the volume etc. So, as a brand
new start up the decision was
made not to reprint…something I
now still ask myself “what if?”.
What if we did and sold out of
those as well. Still to this day (and
its now June) do I receive
messages from people wanting
one of our My Mindful Year
Pliaries (I call them a Pliary
because they are Planner and
Diary all in one).
So yes, the word pronounced
Diary with a Pl is a word I’ve
created which is unique to My
Mindful Year.
Twelve months on I’ve built a
tribe of people that I’m proud to
say are my Biz Besties, a
community of people that I can
share the highs and lows with and
just get it and, more importantly,
know themselves that someone
else has shit days just like them.
I’m more and more confident with
where I’m at, with talking about
my journey and I now feel blessed
that my son has taught me so
much because its lead me to
where I am now. A nomination
and finalist in a National Biz Mum
awards for Best Life and Business
Clarity and a growing connection
with my 2 year old whom I’m
starting to understand a whole lot
better.
He really has taught me so much.
He’s taught me how to laugh
uncontrollably at the small
things, that mindset is
everything when you hit rock
bottom, isolation is in the mind
because there is always - and I
mean always - someone to talk
to if you put your hand up and
ask. Most importantly he’s
taught me calm, positive
language framework and
gratitude of personal growth… I
can’t thank him enough. I have a
growing start up - its taking
small steps in the right direction.
They don’t need to be HUGE, nor
do I compare my business or
journey with that of others for
this is unique to ME.
WEEKS"

So, if there is anything I can share with you about
starting a business, growing a business or being in
business it's this. It is “allow yourself to grow, stay
true to your why believe in your passion and
vision because there will be tough times…it's
these things that will see you get through it - with
the support of a great community”.
So, keep rocking your business, motherhood,
business at home with children, no children, or
just life in general because you are on your own
journey to success, whatever that means to you.
Success - to me - isn’t the money, it’s the wins
along the way with my son, the belief I have in my
vision and product to make a difference to many
lives and the fact that I’m now comfortable to talk
about my challenging journey with parenting my
child.
“ALLOW YOURSELF
BUDGET BLOW OUTS – 4
TYPES OF BLACK HOLES IN
FAMILY BUDGETS
with Fay Chan from
Budgeting123
FROM DINKS TO BEING A FAMILY
WITH KIDS, LIFE THROWS YOU
CURVE BALLS AND TRANSITIONS
AT YOU ALL THE TIME.
SO, HOW CAN YOU MAKE SURE
YOU STILL LIVE THROUGH ALL
THE CHANGING CIRCUMSTANCES?
A lot of people think they need more – more income, more
winnings, more money, just more.
I’ve always said that everyone has incomings, it’s how you
distribute it which makes your life work or not. In other words,
it’s a function of how you use it – your spending!
With a lot of young families, costs start to increase as the kids
get older, especially when they reach school age. The longer
you make your finances last you, the more choices it’ll actually
allow you to have.
The fastest way to have more money now is to examine your
current daily spending & regular bills. Now I’m not going to talk
about regular bills here, I want to talk about the killer to most
budgets - the incidental daily spending!
P A G E 2 3 | W B S M A G A Z I N E

| W B S M A G A Z I N E
M o n e y
SOME MOST COMMON SPENDING
BLOW-OUTS I HAVE NOTICED ARE:
Additional grocery items – I do
understand it’s hard to stick to a list
and not notice all the fabulous glossy
packaging around to buy more from
the shelf! I fall victim to discounted or
on special items and leave the
supermarket with more items than I
should have. But when you add up
additional “incidental” grocery items, it
amounts to expenditure on stuff &
food that you actually don’t need.
However, by sticking to your list, this
habit will have you deviate less and not
spend more than you should.
"I FALL VICTIM
TO DISCOUNTED
OR ON SPECIAL
ITEMS AND
LEAVE THE
SUPERMARKET
WITH MORE
ITEMS THAN I
SHOULD HAVE."
Eating Out – It’s convenient, and easy
to eat out. I get it. But if you looked at
the expenditure especially towards
lunch and takeaways, they can add up
to hundreds of dollars over a month!
It’s always more cost effective to make
your meals at home and bring
leftovers. It can be boring, effort and
not as exciting as buying out, but golly
will it save you a bucket!
Coffees - I’m from Melbourne so it’s a
vice for me. However I limit myself to
a purchased coffee once a day (and
sometimes none as I’m also concerned
about the “war on waste”). If you
have 2-3 daily, chances are you would
have spent hundreds on coffees this
year already! Let’s do a simple
calculation, let’s say a coffee is $4, you
buy that twice a day for 7 days a week
= 4 x 2 x 7 = $56 a week, over a year
that’s $2912. And that’s just for one
of you.
Discounts & sales- How tempting
is it to see that something is
heavily discounted? Bargain
right?! The usual reasoning I
always hear is “I saved $50! I only
paid $80, not $130” Well you
actually didn’t save anything, in
fact you spent $80 and didn’t need
to spend $130! Marketing and
advertising to have you buy NOW
is about speaking to your FOMOness
& that instant gratification
monkey jumping on your shoulder.
We are all emotional creatures and
we buy on impulse. So know
yourself and just pause for a
moment on your purchases to
assess the need.
To tackle incidental & unnecessary
spending, I always introduce a
spending tracker to my clients to
keep a list of everyday spending.
It’s called a SpendLog. It tallies all
those little things that you don’t
think about. So how does it tally
those things that you don’t think
about? Well, it’s a very traditional
method…. are you ready? It’s
called using pen & paper and a
calculator!! Yup, no apps, no
spreadsheets at the beginning.
You don’t learn swimming from an
app, so you don’t learn to manage
money from an app either – it’s by
doing (and then you can automate
at a later stage).
These days the tactility of cash is
really amiss in our society.
Psychological science says that
when you write things down, you
grasp more of the learning and
understanding than using
technology to note take. By
writing your spending down daily,
it’ll re-presence the tactility, and
the insights of the learning will
gradually reveal itself. There’s
actually method to my madness.
Like all things that require
commitment, it can be a slow burn.
But do this repetitively and for a
long time, it’ll become habit – a
great habit!
"TAKE CARE OF THE PENNIES, AND
THE POUNDS WILL TAKE CARE OF
THEMSELVES"
Bonus tool to help you:
spend buddy
A really good way to pull yourself in when you’re out and
about is to remind yourself what really matters – is this
coffee going to make the difference towards your savings
goal? What is the priority here? To enjoy your pack of
chips during TV tonight, or to contribute those few
dollars more towards your kid’s pocket money. As an
English proverb puts it nicely, “Take care of the Pennies,
and the Pounds will take care of themselves”. Remember
that every little cent counts!
For a copy of your own SpendLog, please go to
3 Social Media Tips
Define your key purpose & reason for using
social media.
Example: Looking to increase brand
awareness by Inspiring/educating your
audience on the benefits of using your
product/service.
For extremely effective extension and
exposure into new audiences find other
businesses to collaborate with.
Its a fun and great way to work with others
who share the same target audience but don't
complete & benefits all involved.
Purpose
Collaborate
Don't under estimate the power of quality
images. Investing in good quality images is
always a great idea, visual aesthetic is
key to amplify your brand, poor visuals can
EUROPEAN
VACATION
Airbnb & hotel recommendations by
Veronica from Ceneta Insurance Services
London
My rollicking review of my recent rentals!
In my travels in 2016 around Europe and the US, naturally I
stayed at Airbnb properties whenever possible. In stark contrast,
I also stayed in a couple of hotels and it is interesting to compare.
Overall it was a mixed bag of experiences, but they all add to my
hosting arsenal - walking a mile in a guest's shoes is a great
education for a Host!
My best experiences were the Airbnb properties I stayed at in
Vienna & Prague and to be fair, one London hotel.
London: The hotel in question is a German chain
deceptively called Motel One, and I stayed at Tower
Hill. It is a business hotel at the budget end of the
spectrum, but surprisingly well appointed and
fantastic value. The room was stylish & comfortable,
the large foyer was a cosy and inviting area to hang
out on a rainy London night with open fireplaces and
leather chesterfields, and the reception & check
in/out processes were as seamless and efficient as
you would expect a German operation to be. But
there was one thing I was not expecting... They had
the best-looking guests I have ever seen!
Breakfast is served in the open-plan foyer, and what a
feast it was! Being in the heart of the London
financial district, the place was positively teaming
with German bankers. Their impeccably groomed
chiselled profiles, immaculate manners and sartorial
style was enough to make you reconsider the
American Breakfast and send you screaming to
Carnaby Street for an emergency blow-wave and a
wardrobe makeover. Definitely not good for your
self-esteem if you are having a bad hair day, but
enough eye-candy to make you wish you had paid
attention in Economics 101. Dress to impress,
practice your German and don't be late checking out!

Vienna
Sweet
Suite in the heart of
Vienna (https://goo.gl/M8QTaS )
A beautiful old style apartment in a central part of Vienna, I
was in my Happy Place the minute I walked in...
Parquetry floors, high ceilings, casement windows and
french doors took me back to Belle Epoque European
apartments like my family had in Berlin. The decor was
simple but thoughtfully put together, and a lesson in
minimal chic. The apartment was very "white" but that gave
it a dreamy ethereal quality, especially at night when the
quirky lighting created pretty effects on the walls & ceiling
My Host Sandra was there to greet me and was every bit as
gracious as the apartment. She had a bottle of my favourite
prosecco waiting for me in the fridge, and spent time
helping me to orient myself with maps and advice on public
transport before disappearing and leaving me to it for the
next 3 days. We kept in contact and she was wonderfully
helpful at all times. Highly recommended!
Prague
Best local experience in Prague ( https://goo.gl/8Agx5 )
This was an in-home hosting experience, but the apartment
was enormous and I had my own suite of bedroom,
lounge/dining and ensuite bathroom (see pic below).
The apartment was very similar to the previous one in
Vienna: same age, parquetry floors, spacious, light and very
European. M&J could not have been more helpful and
welcoming... SuperHosts indeed!
The apartment is in the heart of the Old Town, a delightful
thousand-year-old labyrinth of ankle-breaking cobblestoned
streets, Absinthe dens and inappropriately located
Thai massage parlours in fresco-facaded buildings. The
place is honestly so old, it makes the Colosseum look avant
garde! For a look at the modern part of the city, go to the
New Town which is veritably next gen as it only dates back
to 1350 AD!
Take one of the free walking tours from the town square to
learn about the age-old Czech pastime of Defenestration
(google it but be warned... it will mess with your head!) and
tour noted landmarks where this quaint custom was
practiced. Prague is the most walkable of cities, and I swear
I came back 6 inches shorter as a result!
High Staff Turnover = Low
business development
Organisational Output
Written by Kirti from Kinetics for Success
These impacts are
damaging to
corporate
reputation, output
and profitability.
According to a recent online
AHRI PULSE SURVEY, more than
half (58.5%) of the respondents
believed that high turnover levels
have had a negative impact on
workplace performance in their
organisations. Without
exception, these impacts are
damaging to corporate
reputation, output and
profitability.
Corporations suffering high staff
turnover rates feel the effects in
several ways. Of these,
decreased staff performance is
chief among them.
By having appropriate
strategies to retain staff,
businesses can provide a
healthy workplace environment
resulting in positive employees
that propel their business
towards growth.
Providing adequate training,
rewarding positive behaviour
and creating and maintaining a
culture of trust and care within
the organisation are concrete
steps to be actioned when
reducing turnover rates.
B U S I N E S S D E V E L O P M E N T | W B S O C I E T Y . C O M

Disruption
to routine
functions
According to the Encyclopedia
of Business, companies with
higher turnover rates struggle
to complete all essential or
significant daily tasks.
The need to re-recruit and retrain
new employees:
• Creates a major impediment
to company growth.
• Impacts the ability to achieve
deadlines.
• Reduces efficiency of
scheduled events.
• May result in lost clients.
P A G E 4 1 | W B S M A G A Z I N E

"Low team morale is contagious
and may also affect the new
employee"
Low team morale
While a high turnover rate may
raise some questions about an
organisation’s hiring process in
the first place, it also leads to a
decrease in team morale.
One contributing factor may be
increased workload for existing
employees due to lack of an
active or fully trained staff
member. Low team morale is
contagious and may also affect
the new employee leading to
some major long term issues
such as staff conflicts and
increased absenteeism.
Costs involved
These become perpetual costs to
the organisation.
One single employee leaving
an organisation impacts on
business financials in several
ways.
Ernst & Young reports the
cost of losing and replacing an
employee may be as high as
150% of the departing
employee’s annual salary
(Workforce.com).
Some common expenses
involved are:
• Advertising,
• Re-training,
• Lost or dissatisfied
customers,
• Low productivity of the
new staff member,
• Reduced productivity of
existing staff involved in
training the new employee.
Survey details:- Survey results discussed above have
been taken from AHRI PULSE SURVEY on TURNOVER
AND RETENTION conducted online in April and May of
