Race Management App Launched by NASCAR
and Microsoft Gets An Upgrade
A year ago, NASCAR and Microsoft
unveiled the sanctioning body’s new Race
Management app at Sonoma Raceway.
A year later, upgrades now allow officials
to oversee the running of races more
efficiently and with more information at their
fingertips than
ever before.
The initial
version of the
app combined
approximately
six screens’
worth of
information
into a fast,
efficient,
usable app.
But as
more data
became
available
through
advances in
technology
and officials
began to
grasp and
understand
Photo: Integrated Talent
how such apps could improve their workflow,
the need for upgrades became evident.
It’s not an unusual situation, according to
John Probst, NASCAR’s managing director
of competition and innovation, who noted
that such advances are what led to the
development of the initial app.
Time passes, Probst said, “and (pretty
soon) you’ve got 19 apps doing 19 unique
things and you still have some combination
of print and paper … and as you add more
complexity to what we do with the pit out
cameras, the PRO system, loops, freeze the
field … the next thing you know you end up
with this monstrosity of a system that very
few people can get their head around and it’s
not efficient.”
The upgraded version of the app includes
a layout of each race track, as well as
information such as lap counters, running
positions of every car, pit stop information
such as what lap a car pitted on and if the
car took two or four tires and estimated time
Photo: Microsoft
until end of the race. Officials can monitor a
single car, a select group of cars or the entire
field. The “track” changes colors (green vs.
yellow) depending on the race conditions; pit
road is displayed in red when it is closed two
laps from the end of a stage.
Previous events, going back to the start of
the 2016 season, are archived and accessible.
“The advantage of that is now we not
only have our system updated and upgraded
12 ITJ www.TruckDriverMagazines.com
with the latest and
greatest technology, but
we also now have the
ability to look back at
past events and see how
we performed, what our
decisions were given
certain circumstances as
well as answer questions
that come up from the garage as to why we
made certain calls,” Probst said.
“On pen and paper we’d never be able
to relive the action, if you will, from a
particular race. I’ve used this with series
directors … there have been times, especially
when we have a yellow, for instance, with
like four laps to go in a segment. They feel
like we should have been able to get back to
green. Why were we not able to get back to
green?
“We are able to back
up four laps from the
end and watch how
everything unfolded,
when the yellow came
out and the relative
position off the cars
will be correct for when
it came out. Oh, the leader was already by the
pace car so the pace car wasn’t able to capture
the cars first time by and we lost that lap.
“In the past we might have had to pore
through video (or) we might not have had it.”
While the app is currently used only by
NASCAR officials, Probst said he could
easily see it becoming something used by
broadcast partners, other media and even
fans.
Carl Edwards on NASCAR Return:
‘I Haven’t Even Considered Coming Back’
Carl Edwards came back to NASCAR
recently, but the former Joe Gibbs Racing
driver arrived with no plans to climb back
behind the wheel.
“I haven’t talked to anyone and I haven’t
even considered coming back,” Edwards told
members of the
media at Sonoma
Raceway, site of
the Toyota / Save
Mart 350 Monster
Energy NASCAR
Cup Series race.
“Not right now.
I think it’s pretty
clear if I feel like
I really want to
do something
then I would
do it. But like I
said in January,
I guess I would
talk to Coach
(Gibbs) first and
I haven’t had any
conversations
about that.
“I’m probably happier and more content.
You … know how change is; there’s good
and bad and there’s uneasiness. But, man,
I’m enjoying life.”
Edwards, a finalist in the Championship
Round in 2016 and the winner of 28 races in
the series, stepped away from competition
before the start of this season. His No. 19
Toyota fielded by JGR is now driven by
Sunoco Rookie of the Year candidate Daniel
Suarez.
Edwards was at Sonoma Raceway on
behalf of sponsor Stanley.
“Of all the tracks to come visit, this is the
toughest one for me,” he said. “I truly love
this place. It’s so much fun to drive here. …
“I would love to be getting in a car and
go qualify today. I love this place; love is an
understatement. It’s a really, really special
place for me. But it’s just like anything, there
are things that are good and things that are
bad. But the good for me far outweighs the
bad. I was just super appreciative to get the
opportunity to go do the things I do now and
enjoy life.”
In addition to working on his Missouri
farm, Edwards said he’s tried his hand at
sailing, traveled to Hawaii and remains
partnered with Cessna for whom he said
“they’re helping fly some people around; I’ve
done some neat flights.”
While his name continues to surface as
talk about driver lineups for the 2018 season
begins to heat up, Edwards said he’s been
out of touch and unaware of any potential
movement.
“I haven’t paid any attention to any of it,”
he said. “I don’t watch much TV.” ITJ
Qualifying Underway for 80th
National Truck Driving
Championships
American Trucking Associations congratulated
qualifiers for the 2017 National Truck
Driving Championships and announced key
details about the special 80th running of the
event.
“The trucking industry comes together
every spring and summer
for a series of state truck
driving championships
culminating in the National
Truck Driving Championships,”
said ATA
President and CEO Chris
Spear. “ATA thanks all of
the drivers and companies
who made the commitment
to participate in
the competitions and we
recognize your dedication
to safety.”
Professional truck drivers progress from
their state truck driving championships to
nationals, competing in eight classes of truck,
and one step van class. They undergo a written
examination that tests their knowledge
of trucking facts, rules, statistics and safety
protocols, look for defects as part of their
pre-trip inspection, and complete a difficult
driving course.
The National Truck Driving Championships
take place August 9-12 at the Orange County
Convention Center in Orlando. Drivers
compete for the title of National Champion
in eight different classes, with one driver
Facility in Phoenix
The sunny Southwest is about to get
busier with the June 22 grand opening of a
new Schneider facility in Phoenix, Arizona.
its bright orange equipment – is responding to
industry demand by significantly investing in
this fast-growing region.
immediately bring new driving opportunities
to the area.
Drivers in the Phoenix area can now enjoy
these benefits close to home with Schneider:
• Asphalt parking for more than 180 trailers,
plus personal vehicle parking
• State-of-the-art maintenance facility with
eight service bays
• High security parking
• Showers, break rooms and a full laundry
facility
• Ice and fresh food vending machines
• On-site driver business leaders
future, five acres on the property will be developed
into a training facility for drivers.
In addition to offering more local resources
for Phoenix-based drivers, the new facility
provides the operational infrastructure needed
to handle an increased driver fleet in the
region.
“Opening the Phoenix facility is like
moving from a 300-square-foot apartment to
a 2,400-square-foot apartment,” said Nuno
Gomes, regional vice president for Schneider.
“Not only is it in a great location with access
to a highway leading directly to Los Angeles,
but it enables us to bring good, well-paying
jobs to the Phoenix area while keeping drivers
close to their families.”
There are more than 100 driving opportunities
and six diesel technician positions open at
the Phoenix facility. With the larger facility,
there is no limit to the number of driver positions
Schneider can fill in the coming years.
Schneider also expects to add three management
roles and seven administration roles in
the near future. Because the facility will have
a division recruiter on-site, interested driver
candidates can stop in to visit and learn about
the benefits of driving for Schneider, including:
Up to $7,000 tuition reimbursement: $200
per month available for recent graduates of
truck driving schools and current drivers who
are still paying off truck driving school loans.
Several home-time driving options: Schneider
offers a wide variety of driving opportunities,
allowing drivers to find the option that
best suits their work-life balance needs.
Automated transmission trucks: Every new
truck Schneider purchases comes equipped
with an automated transmission, which makes
the task of driving easier and safer.
Professional drivers interested in Schneider’s
opportunities are encouraged to visit
www.schneiderjobs.com. Those in or near
the Phoenix area on June 23 are invited to
visit the new facility at 3150 South 39th Ave.
between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to tour the building,
enjoy a free lunch and speak with onsite
recruiters.
Advantages of a Guided Goose Hunt
By James Osmond
Dakota, and Texas. Then you need not worry
about a guided goose hunting trip.
The advantage of a guided goose hunting
service:
WHEN YOU HUNT UNDER THE
SUPERVISION OF OUTFITTERS,
YOU CAN ENJOY THE WILD AND
HUNTING IN FULL BLOOM.
Goose hunting is the most challenging passion
for the waterfowl hunters. The geese are
sensitive which is pretty tricky for the hunters
to make the perfect shot. If you are planning
a hunting trip and you need a voice of experienced
that guide you to your trip and make it
more entertaining, successful and safe. For this
concern, you should consider the service guided
goose hunting.
No matter which part of the mid-west you
are residing, whether you are planning your
hunting trip to anyone of these destinations:
Alaska, Argentina, Arkansas, California,
Canada, Colorado, Louisiana, Missouri, North
SAFETY:
Hunting has risks and we cannot ignore
them. Even sometimes, a trained hunter traps in
extreme situation where his/her survival would
become a question. Thus, if you are going in
the wood for the first time, you cannot afford
to ignore security measures. Moreover, being a
novice you can be unaware of the security measure
that has to be considered while hunting in
the wild. Your outfitters are trained professionals
that keep you safe even in extreme conditions.
They have technology and skill to keep you safe
from the worse situations. They also aware of
the geography of the land so that there is no risk
of being stranded in an unknown place.
ENTERTAINMENT:
Hunting precisely when you are on the hunt
is not just to feed your appetite; the instead
majority of people hunt for entertainment. Your
hunting trip can bore you, and make you regret
that you decided for this. However, most of the
novice feels the same kind of boredom when
they hunt without any experienced supervision.
return to empty hand. This could be the best
part of the guided goose hunting trip.
COST-EFFECTIVE:
In many ways, guided goose hunting is
cost-effective than going by all yourself. As
the outfitters provide many types of equipment
and convenience that you need not spend your
Moreover, when they return with zero kills that
makes the situation even worse. When you hunt
under the supervision of outfitters, you can
SUCCESS:
It becomes more pathetic when you scout for
all day and return to empty hand. Nevertheless,
that’s okay, as you are starting to hunt. Fortunately,
when you hire an outfitter for the trip,
you can have better outcomes and you never
How To Clean A Spotting Scope
By MD Mamunur Rahman
To maintain top performance, you should
ensure that your scope is always clean. You can
imagine the dirt your scope accumulates while
you are out there in the woods. The dust, fog,
rainwater and among other impurities that make
your lenses, barrel and the scope body dirty.
Obviously, dirty lenses with make your images
Ultra Brush to clean the delicate surfaces of
the scope. This includes the optics that can get
damaged when clean with a hard brush.
You will also require a cloth with non-woven
fibers and extra thickness that can remove any
grease and dirt from the surfaces of the lens. A
liquid anti-fog cleanser will also be essential
look dull and of low
quality.
This is because it
decreases the brightness
and the sharpness
of the image, leaving
you with a low
definition image that is unworthy to look at. In
addition, you would rather maintain your scope
than purchase a new one after a short while. To
avoid this shortcoming, here is a guide on how
you will always ensure that your scope is clean
and functions effectively;
GATHER YOUR NECESSITIES
You will need unique fibers such as the
for this purpose. You should always remember
that cleaning materials such as the microfiber
cloth offered by the manufacturer are best for
your scope. You may purchase the same types
of cloth and cleansing liquid once they are
over. This ensures that your tool meets the best
requirements to make it last longer.
CLEANING THE OUTER SURFACE OF
THE SCOPE
Using the soft microfiber cloth with extra
thickness, you can gently wipe the outer surface
of the scope. Ensure that you avoid contact
with the lens, as this is not the right material to
clean the lens. Ensure that any dirt, grease or
stain is wiped. Ensure that the piece of cloth is
WORLD
clean. You can also clean it
after use in preparation for
the next use.
CLEANING THE LENS
While cleaning the lens,
start with the larger lenses.
This time, use the Ultra
Brush to wipe away any
dust particles. You should
wipe gently in motion, starting from the center
of the lens while moving towards the edges of
the lens. The gentle motion will ensure that the
glasses are not scratched. You should handle
your tool carefully to ensure that it
does not slip, scratch or wrap.
SAFE STORAGE
After cleaning your scope, you may
want to store it safely waiting for the
next use. Ensure that the lens covers
are placed back in their place. The
scope should also be placed in its casing
and stored in a cool, dry place. This
way, no moisture, dirt or dust will accumulate
on the scope again. As delicate as your scope is,
you should ensure that it is always handled with
care, just as you are handling an egg. ITJ
