Attention all teams,

Dear friends of Formula Student Austria,

It is a great pleasure for us to welcome all of you to this

years’ Formula Student Austria (FSA) event.

Oh, how time flies...this year FSA is already

held for the 9th time, and for the 7th time at our

current location, the red Bull ring. Many of the

FSA organizers have been in the FS game for

10 years or more, but the great atmosphere and

spirit of FS and FSA especially still makes it an

enjoyable and unique experience every year.

this year, FSA is bigger than ever! We increased

the competitor count to 50 and both classes

are very competitive with many high-class

entries: Both the top 5 of the IC World ranking List and

4 of the top 6 of the eV WrL will attend and be a set the

benchmark for everybody.

If you look at the following pages you will notice that FSA

seems to be run by just 6 people. this is only partly true.

Indeed, for most of the year the steering committee keeps

FSA running, but it would be utterly impossible for us to

run an FS event, let alone one like FSA without the support

of lots and lots of helping hands from all over the world,

from russia to the uS, from Finland to India. therefore we

would like to thank all of the reviewers, judges, scrutineers

and other staff members who sacrifice their free time

and bring their experience, expertise and passion to FSA

and make this event possible (and awesome!).

Another big „thank you“ has to go out to all the teams (you!)

who chose to come to FSA and make it one of the most

competitive FS events in the world. especially in a season

like this, with ten FS events in six weeks this

cannot be taken for granted and is a big honor

for us!

But since making FSA happen on good spirits

and motivation alone is not possible, we also

teamed up with partners and supporters in the

industrial sector. they not only help make FSA

a reality, they can also offer you the possibility

to graduate from FS into an interesting and

fulfilling job in engineering, Many of them are

on-site so go talk to them and see what carreer options

they can offer you!

that leaves little more to say than wishing you good luck

for the event; have fun; and maybe find some new friends!

mighty“ class of FSAe events. He hit the [FSAe] ground

running during the formation of an FSe team 2009 and

joined FSA in 2013.

part of the FSAe circus since 2005, Christoph can look back

on a lot of experience in the series. Working on aquiring

new supporters for FSA throughout the year, his main responsibility

at the event is the scoring system.

the electronic systems at the event, from timing to team

internet, play nice. During the rest of the year his responsibility

After years of work as junior dynamics guy, Alexander

advances to Head of Dynamics for the 2017 event. As FS

Suspension team leader he knows how to push Formula

Student cars to their limits.

Lukas joined FSA and is now responsible for the rules,

also taking FSA‘s chair in the FSAe world committee.

A racecar engineer by day, a designer by night he also creates

FSA‘s graphical designs and herds the lolcats.

The Climate and Energy Fund was brought to life in 2007 by the federal government

in order to support putting its climate strategy into action – short, middle and

long term. The owner is the Republic of Austria, represented by the environmental

ministry and ministry of infrastructure. The strategies of the Austrian federal government

in the areas of research and technology, environmental protection and energy

provide the basic essentials that are reflected in the programmes of the Climate

„The Formula SAE ® Series competitions challenge

teams of university undergraduate and graduate students

to conceive, design, fabricate, develop and compete

with small, formula style, vehicles.“

Formula SAe rule A1.1: Competition Objective

the roots of formula student lie in 1970s texas, as a

variant to the already existing Mini Baja (competition

for lawnmower-powered offroad vehicles). the idea

resonated well and after a few establishing years, Formula

SAe was introduced as a design competition with a very

open ruleset and also much more "race" appeal since the

cars were allowed to have engines with siginficant power

comapred to the spec‘d single cylinders in Baja.

the event quickly picked up momentum, and in 1998 it

made the jump over the big pond when Formula Student

uK was the first non-uS competition to be held. Soon other

followed and today there are eight official competitions all

over the World:

• Formula SAe Michigan

• Formula SAe Lincoln

• Formula SAe Australasia

• Formula Student Austria

• Formula SAe Brazil

• Formula Student Germany

• Formula SAe Italy

• Formula Student (uK)

Formula Student Austria was founded in 2009 by alumni

of both uAS and tu Graz. the european Formula Student

Scene has been growing rapidly since around 2007 and

there was not only room but need for another competition

besides uK, Germany and Italy. the reception of the event

was quite good, so over the years it grew to its present

size of 42 participants, also necessitating the move from

the Wachauring in Melk to the red Bull ring in Spielberg.

Also, it was one of the first events to allow the 2010-introduced

Formula student vehicles to compete, for some

years even against each other. Starting 2016, however,

this was dropped and replaced by a split scoring with two

classes (Combustion/electric) due to the big development

advances seen in electric vehicles, making them all but

impossible to beat in some aspects.

So what is it all about? Formula Student is an engineering

Design competition that should teach engineering

students some real-world skills relevant to the automotive

and other industries. to sucessfully compete, a team

has to delve into research, design, manufacturing, testing,

developing, marketing, management and finances - this

favors or even requires the formation of multi-disciplinary

teams. this and the fact that Formula Student is as much

a project management exercise as it is an engineering

challenge, it teaches the competitors a valuable and industry-appreciated

combination of soft- and hard skills.

the vehicle itself is governed by a set of internationally

agreed upon rules. the rules have grown pretty complex

over the years (the rule book is now larger than the one for

F1), so here are the defining characteristics:


• Open-Wheel, Open-Cockpit, Formula-style body

• four wheels

• aerodynamic devices are limited in size

C - powertrain:

• 20mm Air restrictor (19mm for e85)

• turbo/supercharging is allowed


• any number of motors and driven wheels

• 80kw peak system power

The first of the so-called Dynamic Disciplines is the Acceleration.

The car has to accelerate from a standstill and cover

a distance of 75 meters a quickly as possible. Due to a high

power to weight ratio, FSAE cars can do this in well below

four seconds with terminal speeds of well over 100 kph, outrunning

almost all road-going sportscars. Each team can

have two drivers, each of them doing two runs.

In the Skid Pad event the lateral ability of the car is tested on

a figure-eight course. After entering the course, the driver

he has to go round the right circle (right turn) two times, then

round the left circle (left turn) two times - the time for the second

lap of each circle is used to determine the score. Again,

each team has 4 runs split among two drivers.

Maximum Score: 75

The Autcross track is a handling course consisting of turns,

hairpins, straights and slaloms and is roughly 1000 meters

long. Each car enters the track on its own and will do a single

“hot lap“ of the course.

The track is marked using small traffic cones which will,

when hit, result in a two-second penalty.

Each team has two runs for each of their two drivers.

Maximum score: 100

The Endurance race takes part on a closed autocross course

over a distance of 22km. At half-time a driver change is performed

and the car has to perform a hot restart. This event

is driven with multiple cars on the course but overtakes are

performed in special two-lane overtaking zones.

The fuel/energy consumption as well as the laptimes during

the Endurance are used to calculate the Efficiency score.

The most important one of the Statics is the Engineering

Design Event. During the judging the team has to present

their car to a group of automotive and racing experts. These

judges will check if the design goals have been met, if the

team members understand their design and if it has been

executed well.

For the Cost Event, the teams have to submit a detailed Bill of

materials up front. At the event, their correctness and completenessis

checked an the team is presented with an additional

cost-related task.

During the Presentation Event, the teams have to present a

business plan for selling their design to fictional investors.

When all the events are over, the scores are added up and

the Winner Over All is determined. Additionally, prices are

given to the best teams in each discipline. From 2014 on, the

scoring was split between cars with electric and combustion

Global Formula Racing is an international collaberation in

Formula Student. In 2010 the former US based Beaver Racing

Team from Oregon State Univeristy (OSU) and EU based BA

Racing Team from Duale Hochschule Baden-Wurttemburg-

Ravensburg (DHBW) Germany joined forces to create one

The team of the U.A.S. Graz - the weasels - got their name from a little animal, which is just like the

team members: agile, nocturnal and cute.

As seen in the previous years, the weasels can always come up with something completely new and

outstanding. To carry on this legacy, this year‘s team has overcome all manner of obstacles and has managed in

putting a new weasel-like beast on the track - the jr17.

Not only because they only have to drive an hour if they forget

The TU Graz Racing Team has been a part of the global Formula Student

Community for 15 years. Founded in 2002 at the Technical University

in Graz we can look back at a great history of building even greater


TANKIA 2017 is set to continue this trend as the 14th iteration of

the TANKIA story. And what a continuation it is! Utilizing a brand

new CFRP - Monocoque, a new aerodynamic concept, a new

suspension design, a new engine genaration and many other new

design Details, “Victoria” could be the fastest TANKIA to ever

leave our Workshop.

With a team of over 80 students, we from KA-RaceIng develop and manufacture formula

student race cars since 2006. This was a very special season for us, since it was the first year,

in which we have created three, instead of two race cars. Besides our combustion and

electric cars, the KIT17d, the first driverless KA-RaceIng race car was born.


The KIT17c evolves around a completely new design. The features that distinguish this years

race car are the new asymmetrical suspension concept, as well as the new aerodynamic

package and the lower centre of gravity, which are adjusted to the formula student race

tracks. The new naturally aspirated KTM single cylinder engine is the main reason for our tremendous

40 kg weight reduction.

of our cars since our first

competition in 2008. It was the

first car we have ever

designed: TOMSOI I.

Today we compete with the

TOMSOI IX in Austria, Hungary and Spain after ten years registered association Infinity-Racing.

In this project every single student evolves enormous regarding personality,

organisational skills, engineering and/or business administration because of our flat hierarchy and because of

a healthy amount of responsibility. We constantly work on our cars improvement for an even better

performance. Each of our approximately 50 team members of the University of Applied Sciences Kempten

works hard and with passion to reach our aims, enjoying an atmosphere of enthusiasm and friendship.

The ZR17 is a steel space frame design with CFRP composite

honeycomb panels, powered by a fuel-injected Yamaha WR450F

single-cylinder engine. The engine is connected to the wheels by a

chain-drive system and a Drexler differential, and cooled by a dual

radiator setup. The suspension is a double unequal-length a-arm

design, with pullrod-actuated coilovers, sitting on Hoosier LC0 10-

inch tires. The electronics consist of MoTeC hardware. ISR

brake calipers, machined grey cast iron discs,

and Tilton master cylinders assist in stopping

the ZR17. The body and aerodynamics

package has been completely

reworked for a seamless

appearance and better

integration with the whole vehicle.

The nb017 is the result of more than 15 years of engineering experience, skill and knowledge and

the latest addition to the long line of TUfast race cars. Focusing on three main goals (lightweight –

vehicle control – aerodynamics) we have developed a car that we believe is ideally suited for the

challenges of formula student racing. Equipped with a 70 hp one-cylinder engine the 152 kg

vehicle is propelled across the racetrack. The highly efficient high downforce aerodynamics ensure

optimal grip, stability and handling in the corners and vehicle control is further enhanced through

The Formula Student Team Weingarten (FSTW) is the racing team of UAS Weingarten, established in 2008.

The FSTW relies on more than 70 students and a considerable number of sponsors. Together with our university

Our „Stinger 17“ is based on 13“ wheels, has an adjustable aerodynamic package consisting of front, rear and

DynamicS e.v. was founded in 2006 by

students of the OTH Regensburg. In 2008, we

competed for the first time in a Formula Student

event. Since then, we have built 10 Formula

Student combustion cars. They are all called RP

(Racing Performance) followed by the respective

year and the letter “c” for combustion.

In 2016 we achieved amazing Top10 positions at all events:

FSA: 9th place | FSG: 8th place | FSS: 7th place

This year we have designed, engineered and manufactured the

RP17c. Its sleek and clean design represents our principle “keep it

simple” and incorporates our team colors. The black carbon structure is

In May 2007, 20 students from the University of Applied Science Coburg decided to become part

of the Formula Student Germany through the establishment of a racing team. Out of ideas, desires,

compromises and hard work emerged the first vehicle one year later: the C-08 Panther. From these

beginnings, a solid structured Formula Student team developed over time which today involves

around 50 active members. The current, and the now anniversary car is the C-17 Pink Panther.

The team involves students of Electrical Engineering, Automotive Technology and

Management, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Sciences and Business Administration,

which all contribute in their field of expertise to the professionally correct and

technically sophisticated realization from the idea of a vehicle to a finished Formula

Student racing car.

you our third-year car called “Bienna”.

The first two years taught us, that it might be nice to have difficult and

complex ideas, to increase the car’s performance. But to benefit from

such things, first, the car had to run and get through the technical inspection.

Our first and our second car didn’t make it past scrutineering

at the attended events. Especially the last season has been very frustrating,

because we missed our goal to take part on the dynamic events

so very close. Most would have surrender, but after wiping the tears of

disappointment we stood up again and worked even much harder. In

this year, it was the main goal to engineer and build a car which will

run at the dynamics events, while reducing the gap to the top-teams in

the same time. To reach this goal, the main target was to make the car

simple and solid, mainly according to the electrical components, where

we took too many risks before. The motto “You‘ve got to walk before

you can run” accompanied us all the time.

The eb017 is the consequential progression of the conceptual decisions of last year’s TUfast

electric car. Focusing on three main goals (lightweight – aerodynamics – vehicle dynamics) we reevaluated

everything and submitted every component to a critical redesign. Now the highly

integrative 3D printed wheel hub drive package unites uprights, brakes, gears, cooling and motor.

The car is driven by self-developed inverters and battery package featuring a self-made AMS. Our

highly efficient aerodynamics and elaborate vehicle dynamics control promise the highest

performance of the 162 kg vehicle on track. We want to thank all our sponsors for making the

The Formula Student Team Schanzer Racing Electric e.V. (SRe) is the racing team from

Ingolstadt in Bavaria, Germany. It was founded in 2011 by five students with the goal to build a

functional race car.

University Racing Eindhoven is the electric

Formula Student Team of the Eindhoven University

of Technology. Since 2010 the team

has been building electric cars, moving to

four wheel drive in 2015. The newest challenger,

the URE12, features a fully self-developed

powertrain, tires and torque vectoring

control model. Together they lead to unrivalled

vehicle performance

One of the most complex mechanical systems of the car

is the in-wheel assembly. This assembly consists of the

rim, brake system, gears, upright and electric motors, all

tightly tted inside the wheel. The assembly is optimized

for Formula Student events, i.e. maximum efficiency

and a maximum speed of about 130 km/h. The

lightweight, self-developed electric motors have a

maximum speed of 18.000 RPM. The motor speed is reduced

by a planetary gear set, with a gear ratio of

11.56:1, which increases the torque to ~400Nm per

wheel. This results in an acceleration from 0 to 100km/h

in a mere 2.3 seconds!

Vienna’s University of Technology’s Formula Student

Team is called TU Wien Racing. Our main focus is

lightweight design and in-house development of nearly

all our components that make out our newest race car:

the EDGE9. This year, a newly developed inverter accompanies our well-proven and also self-made

electric motors. Due to the integration of a whole new aerodynamic package our car doesn’t only look

edgy but is also keen to prove its performance on track.

PHWT Diepholz

The beginnings of Deefholt Dynamics reach back to the

year 2006. At that time it was only a small group of students

who dealt with the construction of a racing car which should

compete in the formula student. This idea bumped into huge

enthusiasm, so our UAS in Diepholz decided to found the

student association Deefholt Dynamics e.V. in 2011.

Deefholt Dynamics e.V. is - apart from the well known

teams of the big universities - an old acquaintance of the

formula student. Every team member participate in the dual

studies programme as a student from a company what sets

us apart from most of the teams. Every year, a complete

new team represents Deefholt Dynamics since the formula

student is part of the project study program during our last

three semesters.

We try to compensate our inexperience with great ambition and engagement

and thanks to our reliable sponsors we were able to construct and manufacture

our racing car within six months. We are really looking forward to the event in

spielberg and we are convinced that we will accomplish our personal goals for

BRS Motorsport is the Formula Student Electric team of UAS

Bonn -Rhein - Sieg with 70 students of all faculties, who share their

love for designing, developing and manufacturing a single-seater.

The G17e (also called Betty) is our first all-wheel-driven electric

car which sticks out with its CFRP monocoque with 10” aluminium

wheels, heave- spring system, a powertrain package by AMK combined with a compound planetary gearbox

in the uprights and an aerodynamic package. With our G16e racecar named “Carola” we finished our most

successful season in the last year. “Carola” got us many first and second places and in this season. So now

we are going to establish our new concept in the races with “Betty” and looking forward to the races.

We are ETSEIB Motorsport, the team from UPC Barcelona.

Borned 10 years ago, this year we are developing our

6th electric vehicle looking for high performance and reliability.

Team Spark


Team Spark was established in 2011 with only 8 team members. Today

the team consists of 45 students coming from different engineering

departments at the University of Iceland and is this the 6th car.

Throughout its history Team Spark has had one of the highest female

to male ratio and we continue that tradition this year.

This year the car was named after a glorious volcano name Laki. It erupted over an eight-month

period in the 17th century, lava and poisonous clouds caused tremendous damage to Europe's

climate and inhabits.

TS17 - Laki is the newest addition to the Team

Spark family and the first one to have a name.

This year marks our sixth season as a formula student team

and our third visit to the FSA competition. Looking at our

first car the egn12, built in 2012, it is fair to say that we‘ve

come quite a way with the egn17.

What was once a 400 kg beast with steel tube framing, has

developed into a powerful racer, featuring Carbon fibre monocoque, wings and advanced

control systems.

To top it of we introduced 4WD for the first

time this season, to make our car as fast

as possible. But not only our car has come

a long way. The same can be said for our

team. More than 50 students from all fields

of study are now working together to not

only develop our next FSE car, but for the

first time, to also rebuild our egn16 for the

new driverless competition.

We can‘t wait to see how our car stacks up

against the great competition at this event.

Ecurie Aix, the Formula Student Team at RWTH Aachen University, was founded in 1999. The name

„Ecurie Aix" is a reference to the team’s home base in the German city of Aachen, which is located

right at the borders to Belgium and the Netherlands. The word “Ecurie“ means “Racing Stable“ or

“Racing Team“ in french and has been chosen in respect to a very successful Belgian motorsport team

named “Ecurie Francorchamps“. The word “Aix“ is derived from Aachen’s French name: Aix-la-


With our fifth electric car we managed to integrate four electric motors for the very first time in 2016.

The concept promised a very high potential, so we decided to take it a step further. Except for the

monocoque there is almost no part that we took over from last year. Especially the aerodynamics,

suspension and cooling system were heavily improved. This is our third participation in a row at FSA -

we were able to win a trophy each time before. Therefore we are very excited for this year’s event and

we’re looking forward to the famous Spielberg atmosphere.
