Terry Caffrey at King’s Leadership Academy
Year 7 students had the pleasure of meeting and working with local poet Terry
Caffrey on Monday 26 th June, as part of the Great Schools Trust Poetry
initiative. Terry brought light and inspiration to an area of English that can
often be overlooked, and brought poetry to life in an assembly to year seven
and eight students, in which he recited some of his own work alongside
students (and staff!)
Next, students enjoyed workshops
throughout the day with their English
teachers and Terry in order to produce a
piece of poetry about their local area. Some
students even had one to one sessions with
Terry focussing on their poetry writing and
performance poetry.
Finally, students performed their work to the class before
voting for an overall winner, who would go on to
compete in the final with the chance to win the title of
King’s Poetry Day Champion! Abbey Grainger (7ARI),
Jack Robinson (7EUC), Luke Jones (7HIP), Ellie Hughes
(7ARC), Olivia Ratcliffe, Sophie Jones, Ashleigh Haslam
and Grace Colopy of (7HER) competed for the
prestigious title, but with an outstanding poem about the
Warrington bombings Jack Robinson was our overall
student winner! Congratulations Jack!
Throughout the day students were inspired by tasks including how to perform
poetry to a group and use all their senses to create interesting and imaginative
haikus, ballads, sonnets, dramatic monologues, limericks and more!
Terry was blown away by the quality of work produced by our students, with particular mention to the most
imaginative poem of the day by Amelia McGerty of 7ARC, who’s poem “What?” captured all our imaginations, with
descriptions of a “Sellotape sea” in her dream world.
