More old age homes in subsidy struggle
SIVENATHI GOSA
TWO further old age homes
in the Chris Hani district are
reportedly facing a similar
financial crisis to that of the
John Vorster Old Age Home
in Komani.
The Rep reported (“Home
struggles without subsidies”,
July 7) that John Vorster Old
Age Home was struggling to
meet its obligations due to
the non-payment of subsidies
from the department of social
development for the past
three months.
In an investigation by The
Rep this week, it was found
that the Callie Evens Lodge
Old Age Home and
Retirement Complex in
Cathcart, and the Tarkastad
Old Age Home are also in
dire financial straits. Madeira
Old Age Home in Komani did
not respond to queries.
Callie Evens is home to 43
senior citizens and Tarkastad
home to 28.
Head of the Cathcart home,
Pat Stocks, and administrator
of the Tarka Home, Matt van
Vuuren, confirmed they were
waiting for the April, May and
June payments from the
depar tment.
Stocks said the homes
were told there were
“scanning” problems which
delayed the processing of the
claim forms.
“What exacerbates the
situation is that there is no
proactive communication to
NGOs to explain the delay;
what caused the problem and
when payment can be
expected. Being left in the
dark makes it difficult to plan.”
Van Vuuren said the
Tarkastad home has space for
78 people, but financial
constraints limited the
numbers to 28, with only 15
residents getting subsidies.
Stocks said the Callie
Pressing issues dealt with at council meeting
SIMTEMBILE MGIDI
CELLPHONE
towers, the
illegal
o c c u p at i o n
of land
and tampering with
electricity meters
were some of the
main issues raised
in the Enoch
Mgijima Local
Municipalit y
(EMLM) council
meeting on
We d n e s d ay.
The EMLM used the
meeting to issue a
stern warning to people
illegally occupying land
that offenders would be
dealt with.
This follows after the
illegal occupation of
land in Ezibeleni, with
the plots apparently
handed out by
unknown persons.
In a council meeting
yesterday, executive
mayor Lindiwe Gunuza
Nkwentsha said the
had, since 2015, taken a
decision to only admit
residents that were able to
afford full payment of the
fe e s .
“Our committee is focused
on fundraising, and the
community provides the
home with events in order to
do that. Local businesses are
supportive, and individuals
also make anonymous
d o n at i o n s . ”
Van Vuuren said the
Tarkastad home was having
difficulty in getting
assistance from the
community “but there are a
few that do help. We need to
cater for the pensioners’
needs by buying adult
diapers, toiletries and
meeting other basic needs.”
Stocks said the department
had informed them last year
in Bhisho that the subsidy
would be increased from
R1 700 per resident to R2000
in the new financial year.
council “had never
decided that any land
must be given or be for
sale in Ezibeleni.
“Whoever gets land
illegally, it will be taken
(sic). Whoever puts up
a shack it will be
destroyed, that land
will be taken and you
will be arrested for
doing that. There is no
land that is ready to be
put up for sale, we
should find land and
rezone it which will
help us with increasing
the rates.”
The leasing of land
should also be
i n v e st i g at e d .
The council approved
recommendations that
an amnesty period of
two months be
provided to persons
who had tampered with
pre-paid electricity
meters on condition
that the tampered
meters be replaced at
no charge and
beneficiaries start
paying for power with
immediate effect.
“This was taken into
consideration when we
planned our new budget; the
failure to follow through on
this has resulted in elderly
residents having to fund the
extra R300 per month. The
subsidy and pension they
receive only covers 44% of
the actual cost for frail care,
so this places the
organisation under financial
pressure.”
The Rep has been in
contact with the social
development department in
Komani since June 22 with
questions sent through about
the initial crisis as reported
at the John Vorster Old Age
Home. No response was
received from either the
Komani or provincial office.
Contact was made again
with the Komani office this
week which indicated it was
waiting for approval from
province before comment
could be made.
The acting chief
financial officer Estelle
Tylali is set to work out
the details of the
proposed amnesty and
report back to council.
In a brief report
had been tampered
with yielded positive
results, but council
heard that municipal
technicians were now
being intimidated and
prevented from
The replacement of tampered
meters would be coupled
with a period of amnesty
tabled before council, it
was indicated EMLM
was suffering “huge”
electricity losses, mainly
due to tampering with
pre-paid meters.
An earlier campaign
to remove meters that
action by the local
authorit y.
Good news for
Komani residents
would be the proposed
placement of additional
cellphone towers in
Komani – in Factory
Road, Livingstone Road
and Drakensberg Road
– by Client Star Towers.
This would serve to
accommodate the
increase in cellphone
users and users of data
approved by the
department of
It was then decided
that the replacement of
THE REPRESENTATIVE 21 July 2017
Drugs and alcohol in the park
More security needed
in Memorial Gardens
SIMTEMBILE MGIDI
T
HE Memorial Gardens in
Komani, once a haven for
families in which to relax
and enjoy the scenic
surroundings, is fast becoming
a hangout spot where drugs and
alcohol are being consumed.
The gardens, located in
Robinson Road in Komani, fall
under the jurisdiction of the
Enoch Mgijima Local
Municipalit y.
A member of the grounds
staff, who wanted to remain
anonymous, said a problem
existed with young people who
were drinking in the gardens
over weekends, leaving the
bottles behind and the facility in
a general filthy state.
“On Mondays, we have to
clean their filth such as faeces
and other disgusting things. I
know I am a cleaner, but some
things are outrageous and not
good for our health.”
He said a high fence and
security should be provided to
keep the facility cleaner and
safer for the general public.
“We do try to chase away the
youngsters who smoke their
drugs here but they are not
always afraid of us.”
A Westbourne man who did
not want to be named was
sitting on a bench in the park
with two friends.
He said people were being
robbed while walking home
from a tavern situated opposite
the park.
“We are drunk and
defenceless and what else can
we do as the youth? As a result,
we become targets on the way
home – the police should pull
SAFETY CONCERN: The Memorial Gardens in Komani, once a
place for families to relax, is fast becoming increasingly unsafe
up their socks.”
The youths agreed that more
entertainment facilities should
be provided to keep the youth
busy and away from drugs.
The Rep reporter observed a
few groups smoking dagga in
the park during the time of the
interviews, which were shortly
after 2pm last Thursday.
The issue of safety in the park
was raised with the Enoch
Mgijima Local Municipality with
spokesman Fundile Feketshane
acknowledging there was a
problem at the public gardens.
He said a security guard,
based at the gardens, had to be
relocated to another area.
“We have submitted a request
PUFFING: Smoke wafts from the cigarette of a visitor to the
Memorial Gardens in Komani
Pictures: SIMTEMBILE MGIDI
to our safety and security
directorate for assistance before
the close of the 2016/2017
financial year and we are
awaiting their response. As an
interim intervention, our parks
department has written to
surrounding schools.”
This was, he said, according
to a municipal assessment that
schoolchildren were perceived
to be the ones using drugs in
the area.
“We will write another letter
when the schools re-open to
sensitise them about this
problem and also engage the
security cluster.”
He said in 2014, a business
plan was developed to fence the
gardens but due to financial and
budgetary constraints it could
not be done.
“ When we receive financial
assistance as the parks
department, we will definitely
fence the park.”
Go-ahead for
more cell towers
From page 1
environmental appeal,
the South African Civil
Aviation Authority
would also need to give
a p p r o va l .
The council indicated
it would be a good idea
for the towers to be
placed on council
property for revenue.
The proposal and its
recommendations on
Land Use Scheme
requirements and
advertisement for
objections were
approved.
A contentious issue
under discussion was
contractors, tasked with
construction and
patching of potholes,
wanting more money
during the project.
Gunuza Nkwentsha
said construction
companies wanting
more money than the
initial quote should be
held accountable and
an inquiry made into
the spending.
Acting director of
technical services
Ayanda Gaji said
requests of more than
20% of the original
amount were sent to
the mayoral committee
for approval.
“However, when
quotations are brought
forward for a tender, it
normally is based on
the amount of money
needed for the job to be
completed which is
based on research done
at that moment.”
DA councillor Zuko
Mandile said while the
time period since the
quote had to be taken
into account in terms of
costs, some escalations
were around 100%,
which were
unacceptable.
The public and the
media were then asked
to leave the meeting for
in-council discussions
at about 1pm. By
4.30pm, the meeting
remained closed.
It is however believed
that the motion of no
confidence in Gunuza
Nkwentsha and council
speaker Mzoxolo Peter,
which have been raised
by the DA and the
United Front, were due
to be discussed during
the closed session.
The outcome was not
known.
Women march against abuse
SIVENATHI GOSA
THE plight of women and
children who are being
abused, were raised during a
march by the Anglican Church
of Southern Africa Mothers’
Union Diocese of Ukhahlamba,
with different church members
last Thursday.
The women, accompanied
by spiritual leaders of the
Anglican Church, started the
march from Philani Clinic to
the Mlungisi police st at i o n .
The women walked in
silence with placards bearing
messages slamming the
actions of perpetrators and
expressing support for victims.
M ot h e r s ’ Union president
Lindiwe Thabo said while the
march was being carried out
in silence, their actions and
cries were going to be seen
and heard.
“This is the first time that
we are having an event like
this. It is also happening in the
surrounding areas of Komani
such as Whittlesea, Dordrecht
and Cacadu. We are slowly
losing our dignity as women
and our children are being
raped and killed mercilessly –
enough is enough. Society is
losing its humanity.”
The M ot h e r s ’ Union handed
over a memorandum, pleading
with the police to protect the
women and children of the
community from the killings,
raping and human trafficking.
Other issues raised included
drug dealing and use in
schools, the disappearance of
police dockets and complaints
about suspects returning to
communities.
“We are praying for our
community and country. We, as
the M ot h e r s ’ Union, stand for a
stable family life,” said Thabo.
Acting station commander
Lieutenant-Colonel Xolani Sali
said the memorandum would
be sent to Komani cluster
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
C
OOPERATIVE Governance and
Traditional Affairs (Cogta)
MEC Fikile Xasa spent his 67
minutes for Mandela Day doing
gardening and painting at the
Phumelela Special Care Centre in
Ezibeleni on Tuesday.
Addressing the Enoch Mgijima
Local Municipality representatives
at the event, he said the vision of
municipalities focused on
resources more than its people,
neglecting that people were the
real gold of communities.
“Let us focus on human
development and not only on
economic development and
agriculture. The gift of singing in
this area has a story to tell. We
should use it towards the
development of this place.”
He said the day’s purpose was to
celebrate former President Nelson
Mandela – respected by South
Africans and the rest of the world.
At the age of 90, Mandela had
visited London for his birthday
c e l e b r at i o n s .
He had said at the time that it
was not only a day to celebrate his
birthday but a day that “should
keep everyone busy doing
something for the less fortunate”.
“However there are people
among us, who teach our children
things that are unworthy, using
Mandela’s name. When Mandela
was arrested in Rivonia in
Johannesburg he said, “I am
fighting against white domination. I
will equally fight against black
domination. He was implying that
he was fighting against the system
and not the colour.”
He said there were people, who
preached hatred against whites in
the name of Mandela, planting
seeds of division, which was
contrary to what the late statesman
had stood for.
“Mandela was preaching reconciliation
and not hatred. It is bad
when those at the top are the ones
teaching the youth corrupt politics.”
Xasa said the freedom charter
stated that South Africa belonged
to all who lived in it, black and
white.
He said there were thieves using
their positions to steal money, and
citizens would have to play a
watchdog role.
“They even want to call the ANC
a black political party. Our vision
states we want to build a
non-racial, a non-sexist SA. That is
why veterans of the ANC are angry
because they can see we are
destroying what they started.”
Xasa said he was anti-Gupta and
the people who were following
them must not be allowed to divert
the revolution of the country.
He also stated his support for
ANC deputy Cyril Ramaphosa for
president.
Phumelela principal Nobuntu
Gulwa thanked the Cogta
Community Workers Programme,
CTM for donating clothes, blankets
and groceries and Protea Spar for
sponsoring cakes and groceries.
CHILD-HEADED households,
disabled people and child care
centres were the main
beneficiaries of a 67 Minutes
for Mandela Day outreach by
the Chris Hani District
Municipality (CHDM) on
Tu e s d ay.
CHDM executive mayor
Kholiswa Vimbayo,
accompanied by a municipal
delegation and Intsika Yethu
Local Municipality mayor
Jongumzi Cengani, visited two
families and a child care centre
in Cofimvaba and two families
in Illinge.
“We are honouring Madiba’s
legacy by making the lives of
the unfortunate better. He was
a man who believed in peace
and a better life for all. Instead
of hosting luxurious expensive
events and wasting money, we
must give back to the
communit y,” Vimbayo said.
CHDM had chosen the
beneficiaries based on their
poor living conditions.
Two families in Cofimvaba
received new houses while the
Fountain of Hope Child Care
Centre in the same town
received groceries and
appliances.
Nompucuko Njotini, 62, from
Foti Mkhwanti Village, who is
physically disabled, and
Zikhona Frans, 24, from
Qamata Village, who is the
head of a family of three,
received furnished houses with
groceries from CHDM.
For years, Frans and her
family have been living in a
disintegrating hut with the roof
patched with plastic bags.
The Fountain of Hope Child
Care Centre provides shelter to
25 children who are victims of
abuse and neglect and was
started five years ago with a
vision of taking children off the
st reets.
“We all know how much
Madiba loved children, so it is
relevant for us to emulate his
humanitarian work by donating
to this centre,” Vimbayo said.
The centre received a
refrigerator, lounge suite, two
wardrobes, microwave and
groceries and R13000 to
upgrade its security.
CHDM was assisted by
Qhumanco Tradings, Absa and
Standard Bank with donations.
Cengani thanked CHDM for
the donation within the Intsika
Yethu area, saying the
municipality was focusing on
helping disabled people living
in 21 wards.
Illinge resident John Sizani
was promised a new house by
the end of the month.
The Rep reported (“Illinge
man needs help repairs to his
RDP house”, March 3 2017)
about a man who lived in a
dilapidated house for four
years.
“We saw the story in The Rep
and we thought we should do
something about this. For now
Sizani is going to live in a
temporary home while is new
house is being built,” said
a row, the Mark Master Masons of
Mbabala Hunt Club have raised
funds for Tarkastad Home for the
Aged through hunting packages and
raffles. This year, a record amount of
R41 000 was raised, but the group
believes they can exponentially
increase the amount in years to
come by making use of digital
technology and the internet to sell
raffles to an international market.
While in Tarkastad, the hunters
have made contributions to other
worthy causes and supported local
businesses.
Jan Smit of Gonubie won the first
STUTTERHEIM – Last Wednesday, the
“Merry Scholar” David Muller came to
SADS in Stutterheim, straight from his
stint at the National Arts Festival in
Grahamstown, writes John Emery.
“He has been with us before, giving
us the Oom Schalk stories. – I missed
the Imagining Einstein show – and the
audience has appreciated his colourful
story-telling. That night he spoke for an
hour, in quite a different vein.
“I have been to shows at the festival: I
have heard a young woman from
Johannesburg speaking candidly of her
body and of relationships, and, while I
was bemused at the time, I was left
with no profound discovery. And I have
heard for an hour a celebrated South
African actress depicting the lives and
problems of three generations of
women which – owing to my deficiency
– left me unrewarded. And so it is, that
some of us can be moved by a string
quartet, for example, and others by the
singing of Ray Phiri. And I know that
one man, coming out from this show,
said ‘This meant nothing to me’.
“This was a daring and sympathetic
rendering of a Johannesburg man’s
account of his dreadful upbringing –
“my fourteenth school” – and his
discoveries of becoming a stay-at-home
caring dad. The story made an
immediate engagement with a satiric
account of this dad taking his child to
school and countering the questions of
the mothers. It had the ghastly humour
of his wife’s statement, ‘I am late’. Then
followed a story-line, depicting first the
circumstances of the marriage to
Christina and describing the love and
difficulties of looking after Angus, their
first-born. But then the tale tells of the
deprivations and neglect of this man’s
childhood and upbringing.
“David Muller has adapted Bruce
Clark’s book Love Sex Fleas God to a
reading, capturing the pathos and
humour of the original. I believe the
circumstantial detail awaken
recollections of personal happenings
and frustrations. The tale reaches an
unexpected epiphany in the man’s
crying out: ‘I am Dad’. This is a triumph.
“So, whereas the Johannesburg
comedienne had left me cold, and
whereas the celebrated South-African
actress had left me bewildered, this
tour de force left me with a shared
sense of triumph.”

Slipping
through
our fingers
A
EDITORIAL
OPINION
FRIEND recently told me of a
little girl who hangs around
taverns in Mlungisi. She is 12
years old and helps to look after
her younger siblings. The thought
of this child and her
circumstances has haunted me
ever since.
Is she warm? Is she hungry? Is
she scared? What are the chances
that, considering the fact that she
is in the company of adults in a
place where alcohol is consumed,
she is free from abuse or even
rape? Where are the people who
are supposed to keep her safe?
I know, as you do, that this is
not the only child facing dire
circumstances in South Africa.
They are all around us – the
children living in the street and
scratching through dustbins, the
ones approaching cars for coins,
the ones aimlessly walking the
streets – often with bare feet – on
cold winter’s mornings.
Any parent who is raising a
child with love and hope for a
better future, would be horrified
by the circumstances of this child
and many, many more like her.
We pin our hopes on
organisations like a severely
cash-strapped Child Welfare and
an often overwhelmed social
development department to assist
these children. At times, children
in dire circumstances are taken
away from a home which is not
conducive to their well-being and
placed into foster homes. Ideal?
Certainly not – what would be
ideal would be the rehabilitation
of an entire family who could then
stay together but realistically this
is not always a possibility.
The concerns are also real that
these children’s circumstances
force them into lives not of their
own choosing, lives which may
result in criminal activity, drug
abuse and prostitution.
What is obvious is that, as
adults, we have a collective and
individual responsibility to help
these children – by reporting their
circumstances to structures able
to make a difference, by trying to
assist in meeting their needs by
supporting the children and these
structures and by promoting
compassionate interventions to
change their lives.
There is a quote by a mystery
author, Stacia Tauscher, who
remains a bit of an enigma but
her words hold true: “We worry
about what a child will be
tomorrow, yet we forget that the
child is already someone today.”
Leaders not
leading at all
WE HAVE no leaders. This is what
has popped in and out of my mind
for a long time while considering
the political, economic and social
spheres.
I searched the internet for a
definition of leadership with the
following found in the Business
Dictionar y: ”The activity of leading
a group of people or an
organisation or the ability to do
this. Leadership involves:
establishing a clear vision, sharing
that vision with others so they will
follow willingly,
providing the
i n fo r m at i o n ,
knowledge and
methods to
realise that
vision, and
c o o r d i n at i n g
and balancing the conflicting
interests of all members and
st a ke h o l d e r s .
“A leader steps up in times of
crisis, and is able to think and act
creatively in difficult situations.”
Having read this definition, do
you think any of our leaders
resemble the sort of leader
described here?
Those who know me know that I
always complain that we are led
by imisila, meaning the leaders we
have should actually be the ones
being led. It is amazing that so
many people find themselves in
leadership positions when they are
palpably not suited or qualified to
do so.
Let’s take the report of the
auditor-general about the financial
management of municipalities, for
example. Many have consistently
performed poorly and the situation
does not seem to be changing.
Many are clueless as to what
they need to do to turn the
situation around. Has anyone been
made to pay for this? Has anyone
been fired? Has any mayor been
demoted? Not a chance! That is
not how we do things in our
country. Being efficient in your job
seldom counts as a positive.
It seems that other talents that
have nothing to do with good
governance
matter more.
IN
TOUCH
... with Phumelele P Hlati
If you do
not believe
me, look
around in the
sphere you
work in.
Check who the leaders are and
what they are doing. Check how
they even became leaders. Were
they elevated because they were
the best possible persons? Have
they provided good leadership that
has steered the institution or their
organisation in the right direction?
The disaster that is the st at e
presidency would not be so bad if
the same mediocrity is not
duplicated at every level of
government and organisations of
which we are members. In short,
leaders are being led and
followers are leading.
That just cannot be allowed to
continue at its current trajectory.
The demobilised civil society must
be mobilised again unless we
want to live in a ruined country. I
hope we are not too late, though.
Q: What part of your career do
A: It is a small town, which is
not busy like other places such
as Pretoria. And most of the
people know each other.
Q: What is the biggest problem
that SA is fa c i n g ?
A: We have less farmers with
more people who are demanding
food and that includes less
young people in the agricultural
Q: Do you think that SA is
ready for a young president
and why?
A: Yes, most of the people
believe that investing in the
youth is investing in the future.
Young people are now more
educated, they know how to
reason and think. As young as
we are, we are able to analyse
our country and recognise the
gaps.
Q: What is that one thing you
Zizipho Mgudlwa from Cofimvaba
It is not enough, because we as
community members who volunteer in
the child care centre see the struggles
that the children go through. I think
these organisations should not wait for
people to donate, but should make a
plan. Ubuntu should be a daily thing to
be practised by every individual.
Basanda Mdyada from Ezibeleni
The leader we are honouring –
Nelson Mandela – did not fight our
liberation for only a short while, he
spent years in prison fighting for our
freedom. I think we should follow in his
footsteps and carry on with his legacy
by being humanitarians.

IN OUR POST BAG
Help needed to
put SA on track
LONG Road Ahead of Komani writes:
When I look at the current political mess
and the impact it has had and continues
to have on South Africa, I cannot but help
think that we have a very long way to go
to return our country to the right track.
And what is the right track, you may
well ask? I believe that the right track is
a country that is fair to everyone and a
country that gives people opportunities.
Contrary to what many politicians
seem to promote, I do not believe in a
country of handouts or in a country
where people are judged on the colour of
their skins.
I do not believe in a country where
violence is ever a means to solve a
problem or to address issues, while there
are many other ways it can be done.
WORRIED of Komani writes:
Throughout the Komani area, there are
broken or missing or vandalised stop
signs.
This poses a great hazard to
motorists, especially those who do not
know the area. While some motorists
purposefully ignores these signs, others
are law abiding and would stop – but
alas, the lack of visible signs may mean
I do believe in a country where people
are safe and able to prosper – if they put
in the work that is necessary.
A country that is on the right track, I
believe, will not have to divide its citizens
with radical and populist talk to achieve
its goals – it would be fixing things and
building and empowering people.
It would show people through its
actions that it cares.
Are we a long way from there? Yes, I
believe we are, but I do also believe that
recent opposition to theft and corruption
shows there are still many good men and
women left in South Africa.
As an older citizen it probably will not
be in my lifetime – I hope it is in yours.
Our country is too precious to be lost.
Missing stop signs a hazard
that they will go through a stop street
with possible devastating
consequences.
A simple appeal therefore to the
Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality –
please do an audit of the stop signs
(and yield signs) throughout the area
and fix and replace wherever
necessary. Please do not wait for a
tragedy to happen before taking action.
ROUND&ABOUT
Food drive to help old age home
Community organisation steps in to assist
KOMANI community
organisation VDub
Evolution has started a
drive to collect food for the
crisis-stricken John Vorster
Old Age Home in the town.
The Rep reported (“Home
struggles without subsidies”
July 7) that the home was
desperate for donations as it
continued to await the
payment of its subsidies by
the Social Development
Department over the past
three months.
VDub’s Maxwell Levine
said they had decided to
collect food for the home
after learning of the plight of
the 78 residents.
“In an effort to ease the
burden faced by the elders
the car club has embarked on
a project to collect as much
food as they can.”
The first phase of the
collection took place on
Saturday where the team
collected food for two hours
outside Protea SuperSpar
and another two hours at
Pick n Pay. VDub chairwoman
Shirlene Hartnick said: “We
are ecstatic with the progress
we have made thus far. We
are so grateful to the
management of Protea Spar
and Pick n Pay for allowing
us to collect this
much-needed food in front of
their stores. The reaction
from the community of
Komani has been enormous
and we are grateful to each
and everyone who have
donated. This will surely go a
long way in bringing a little
relief to the Old Age Home”.
The second phase will kick
in for the next two weeks
whereby members of Vdub
will collect in
neighbourhoods and from
certain businesses.
Levine said the third phase
would take place on July 30
where proceeds and food
collected would be handed
over to the management of
the Home.
“Vdub Evolution is also
ecstatic that a good
Samaritan in Raymond Heuer
Jnr of RH Fast Foods in
conjunction with the club is
going to sponsor a spit braai
for the elderly for lunch on
July 30.
“The club is living through
its slogan, ‘Driven by the
passion for our communities’
and the outreach
programmes will go a long
way in helping the
disadvantaged members of
the community of Komani.”
A calling to change lives
SIVENATHI GOSA
PROPHETESS Dudu Qitsi,
better known as the “Iron
Lady”, is the founder of
Vessels of Honour
Ministries which was
started in Komani in May.
“I believe prophets are
born as prophets but it is
up to the person to
answer the calling when
the time is right. Last
year, I was hosting a
women’s conference in
East London when I
answered my calling. God
told me to come back to
Komani where I was
insulted and hurt. I was
not called for women
only, but for the nations.”
The church
membership has grown
from three to 90 over two
months with the majority
being young.
“There are senior
citizens who are slowly
joining the church. My
purpose is to win souls
for heaven and to
PROPHETESS
DUDU QITSI
worship God. Teaching
the word of God is my
No 1 priority.”
Qitsi said the main
difficulties she faced
when starting the church
was to find a building to
rent in town, and dealing
with misperceptions.
“Some people have the
mentality that I am
poaching other people’s
church members, and
that the church is a
money-making scheme,
but that is not true. I
have three businesses –
two in East London and
one in Komani – which
generate income to
maintain the church.”
Qitsi is a Lukhanji FM
presenter with a show on
Wednesdays at 7.30pm
to 9pm, Amanxeba Akho
Abungqina Bakho (”Yo u r
t e st i m o n y ”).
Last year, she also
started a foundation
called Adopt a Girl Child
and donates sanitary
towels to girls in need.
Services start on
Wednesdays from 6pm to
8pm, Friday is worship
night, Saturday is an
outreach programme and
the services on Sundays
start from 10am to 1pm.
Vessels of Honour
Ministries will be hosting
the first women’s
conference in Komani on
August 9. The entrance
fee is R100 with lunch
included. Contact Qitsi
Keep your
home secure
THE security of your family – and by extension your
home – is paramount in a country which is often
the setting for crime, including violent crime.
Safety and the security of your home should thus
be a priority for homeowners. While technology has
advanced much in assisting homeowners in
creating a safer environment, these measures are
often expensive. There are however various ways
and means which can be implemented in
sharpening up security:
ý Create some light. Extra lighting on the
perimeter of your home serves as a deterrent to
would-be criminals.
ý Don’t ever leave an extra key under the
doormat or in the postbox – you may think that
only the intended recipient will be able to get to it,
but this practice is an open invitation for those
wanting to gain unauthorised access to your home.
ý Raise the wall. A fence or a wall around your
home assists in keeping those with criminal intent
at bay.
ý Keep the phone numbers of the police,
ambulance services and local security companies
in a visible, easily accessible spot.
ý Invest in a dog – but make sure to look after
it! A dog can make a great alarm system and will
most likely bark if strangers come near your home.
ý Become involved in a neighbourhood watch.
These kinds of structures are gaining popularity
throughout South Africa as part of a “crime watch”
system. Neighbours alert others of strangers or
possible criminal activity and keep a careful eye on
homes in the area.
ý Burglar proofing is a must. Shop around –
there are some affordable options available on the
market. Security gates are also a great idea and
Children enjoy day of fun
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
THE Queens Hotel and Casino
played host to 55 children,
including children living on the
street, those in foster care and
those in shelters, on Tuesday.
The initiative was made
possible by Owethu Ncantsana
who approached Inga Vanqa
Quantity Surveyors to sponsor
the event with the Queens Hotel
Casino partnering to host the
event.
“I used to see streets kids and
children who came from poor
families asking for R2 at the
malls. I was touched and took a
decision to do something for
them for Mandela Day. I spoke to
some people who were excited
to assist by becoming a part of
the initiative,” Ncantsana said.
She said the children were
transported with the help of the
department of social
development.
Child Welfare chief social
worker Phillip Tichavangana
said, “We have children living in
different parts of the Eastern
Cape who are here for their July
holidays. Some were removed
from their homes to temporary
safe care houses for being
sexually assaulted and other
were being abused physically.
“We also have children who
were abandoned by their parents
who live on the streets.”
The event had been a great
success.
Child Welfare was currently
busy with a street children
programme which included
meals and engaging the children
in sport and educational
activities.
He said some street children
were getting older and were
ashamed to return to school.
“We will go around Komani to
look for businesses to help them
get an internship programme.
“This is for them to see that
there is still hope for a brighter
future,” Tichavangana said.
New group to help addicts
SIMTEMBILE MGIDI
A
NARCOTICS Anonymous
(NA) group is helping
Komani residents
struggling with drug abuse.
The Rep reported (“Drug hell
in Komani”, July 7) that drug
abuse in the area was
e s c a l at i n g .
The NA group was started in
September last year by former
Komani resident Llewllyn
Kammies who currently lives
in Port Elizabeth.
Kammies, who is a
recovering addict, started
attending NA meetings in Port
Elizabeth, but out of fear of
relapsing decided to start a
NA group in Komani.
“I was scared of returning to
Finance minister to speak on economic change
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
FINANCE Minister Malusi
Gigaba is set to tackle the
state of socio-economic
transformation in South Africa
at the Black Management
Forum (BMF) conversation
dinner today at the Queens
Hotel and Casino.
Gigaba will deliver his
address on “The development
of local economies and future
plans to advance and
accelerate economic
t ransformation” with the
purpose of the event to bring
my previous lifestyle. I also
witnessed how other addicts
and former friends of mine
were still suffering and
realised that something had to
be done. I contacted my
sponsor in PE and they helped
me. They sent me a starter
pack and everything just took
off in a matter of days.”
Kammies said he was well
versed with the reality of
trying to escape drug
addiction.
“I know what it feels like to
have a desire to stop and also
being unable to. I was
spiritually bankrupt and felt
defeated. Imprisoned by
feelings of guilt, anger,
hopelessness, depression, low
self-esteem – it was a living
both the private and public
sector on board to exchange
ideas on ways to advance and
accelerate the economic
transformation agenda.
Chris Hani BMF chairman
Mabuti Mpafa said the South
African economy faced
problems of inequality and
unemployment.
The BMF had made an input
in the economic
transformation discussion
paper in trying to define the
terms radical economic
transformation and economic
inclusive growth.
DOING GOOD: The staff and pupils of Toddler’s
Den day care and playschool donated toiletries
to John Vorster Old Age Home as part of their
contribution to the 67 Minutes for Madiba
campaign
Picture: SUPPLIED
nightmare. I hurt every person
who ever cared about me.”
The group’s secretary,
Sibongile Ndwalaza, 22, is
also recovering from
addiction.
“It is a 12-step programme
that assists the addict to get
to the core of the problem.
Addiction is a disease. Our
first principle requires us
[addicts] to surrender and
admit our powerlessness over
our drug of choice. It is proven
that the only way that addicts
can remain clean and sane is
by talking with people who
have walked the same path.
“Our programme serves as a
platform for people to know
that they never need to stand
alone,” Ndwalaza said.
“We inherited South Africa
as a country which was not
transformed after the
apartheid era. The South
African economy does not play
a meaningful role to make
sure that black people are
par ticipants.”
Issues to be dealt with
included small, medium and
micro enterprises (SMMEs)
development as a focal area.
“Money was spent to
establish SMMEs, including
government institutes such as
the Small Enterprise Finance
Agency (Sefa), National Youth
She said sadly some people
did not understand and
reacted in anger towards
addicts.
“Komani does need a public
rehab centre.”
An anonymous member of
the group, now 28, said, “I
have been an addict of alcohol
and dagga since I was 15.
“I accepted my addiction
four months ago, the drug
abuse affected my relationship
with my loved ones and
especially my daughter, but
thanks to the group I have my
life back.”
The NA meetings are held at
10 Scholars Walk Road,
Victoria Park, opposite Maria
Louw High School on
Thursdays and Sundays.
Development Agency (NYDA)
and Eastern Cape
Development Corporation
(ECDC). But, looking at the
unemployment rate, to what
extent has the SMMEs been
assisted? This reflects that
government is not serious.”
Regarding the revised
Preferential Procurement
Policy Framework Act (PPPFA),
he said the tender
qualification requirement
should be enforced for every
organ of state. The economy of
rural and townships should
also be promoted.

Mayor’s tribute
to DA councillor
ENOCH Mgijima Local Municipality
(EMLM) executive mayor Lindiwe
Gunuza-Nkwentsha has paid
tribute to late DA councillor
Jerome Shaw.
Shaw, who was an attorney,
passed away in Cape Town
following surgery recently.
A memorial service was held in
Komani on Tuesday.
Gunuza-Nkwentsha said this
week that “everyone at Enoch
Mgijima Local Council is left
profoundly sad by the passing of
councillor Jerome Shaw. His
political work is well known,
working as the DA Caucus
chairman on the council. His
political acumen was a huge asset
to both his party and council, with
him often having the first word at
council meetings raising legal and
procedural matters.“
She said he had been committed
and worked tirelessly for this
community in various capacities.
He joined local government politics
in 2011 as a propor tional
representative (PR) councillor for
the DA, serving three m ay o r s
during his terms in office, and had
been well known and respected in
both the Lukhanji and Enoch
Mgijima local councils.
“He served on the Administration
and Human Resources Standing
Committee from 2011 until the end
of his first term. He also served on
the Corporate Services Committee
from August last year. His passion,
commitment and dedication will be
missed.”
She expressed the council’s
sympathy to his children, Matthew,
Gerald and Michelle, and his
sisters, Mary and Bernadette.
“We thank the Shaw family for
sharing the most important person
in their lives with us and the
community as a whole.“
Aviation Camp inspires local youths
THE Siyandiza Aviation Camp, hosted by the South
African Air Force (SAAF) in partnership with Denel
in Komani, will draw to a close tomorrow.
The “Young Falcons” camp, hosted at the Gali
Thembani Centre, is the only one in the Eastern
Cape and has been supported by the Chris Hani
District Municipality. Similar camps are being
hosted in Limpopo, North West and Mpumalanga.
The main objective of the camps is to educate
and teach mathematics and physical science and
introduce pupils to the aviation fraternity. Pupils
must be studying both mathematics and physics at
school as a prerequisite for acceptance.
In a statement, the SAAF indicated that it was
working towards support of the National
Development Plan in ensuring that pupils from all
walks of life have access to practical tools that
make maths and physics exciting.
“This is essential because this country needs
youth that is equipped in maths and physics for
aviation, engineering, innovation and whatever
science-related specialty to address research and
development, employment creation and economic
t ransformation.”
About 142 pupils from the Eastern Cape have
attended the local camp with mentors from SAAF
and Denel teaching the pupils about military skills,
maths, physics and life skills. – Rep reporter
Rugby rivalry
this weekend
Breakers, Old Collegians face off in HPJ Cup
MAXWELL LEVINE
ALL roads will lead to the
Mlungisi Stadium
tomorrow for the
biggest game on the local
rugby calendar as Breakers
take on cross-town rivals Old
Collegians (OC) in the
second edition of the much
anticipated HPJ Cup.
Kudos went to Breakers in
the first round of the derby,
when they defeated OC 24-22 in
a thrilling match at the Thobi
Kula Stadium earlier this year.
Collegians will want to
avenge that defeat and turn the
tables on their opponents in
their own back yard. Things
have certainly changed for both
teams, with Breakers having an
indifferent league campaign
and Old Collegians boasting
one of their better seasons in
years. Breakers have always
dominated their rivals and will
go into this match as favourites.
The last outing between the
two sides was at the Easter
Tournament at the Mlungisi
Stadium, where a shell-shocked
Collegians side were d o m i n at e d
by the men in black, white and
gold.
Since then, OC have recruited
CRUNCH TIME: Do not miss out as Breakers and Old
Collegians face off in the HPJ Cup in Komani this weekend.
Collegians counterpart Neville Olivier showed they were up
several players to beef up their
squad. To spice matters up, OC
did the unthinkable by roping in
four former Breakers players in
BA Siyobi, Vuyo Ngemtu, Loyiso
Ngculu and crowd favourite Lali
Maso.
Breakers have huge forwards
and will want to dominate
upfront. Captain Thabo
Sokwebe has been at the helm
for years, he has seen it all and
won many battles and will spur
on his troops not to disappoint
in front of the Mlungisi faithful.
Breakers have game makers
at the back with nippy fullback
Nkunku Mbusi an integral part
of their attack and goal kicking.
With evergreen Milo Nqoro
and Tulani Rengqu among their
backs, Breakers have the fire
power to unsettle any team.
Old Collegians will count on
the physicality of BA Siyobi to
drive them forward. Ngculu,
with his expertise at the
lineouts and leadership
qualities, will play a significant
role. The terrible twins Romaine
Flusk and Jonathan Hare will be
a menace at the breakdown,
with Nkomo Mabona up for the
task at hand. Vuyo Ngemtu will
add the calming effect at
halfback with playmaker Maso
“Msoseji” wanting to prove a
point or two. In captain Neville
Olivier, they have a dangerman,
who can dislodge any defence.
Collegians can count on their
explosive and pacy young guns
in Beertjie Olivier and Darren
Williams to add that extra
spark, with Craig Pijoos always
in the mix.
In games like this form goes
out of the window and it will be
the team with the “big match
temperament” (BMT) that will
p r e va i l .
Komani rugby-loving
supporters are bracing
themselves for a huge rugby
spectacle.
Gate opens at 1pm with the
second teams starting at 2pm
and the main match at 3pm. A
R10 entry fee will be charged
with a razzmatazz atmosphere
expected with live music, VIP
tents and lots more.
names of the players that made selection
are not yet available, as they are still with
