The Rep reported (“Home struggles without subsidies” July 7) that the home was desperate for donations as it continued to await the payment of its subsidies by the Social Development Department over the past three months. VDub’s Maxwell Levine said they had decided to collect food for the home after learning of the plight of the 78 residents. “In an effort to ease the burden faced by the elders the car club has embarked on a project to collect as much food as they can.” The first phase of the collection took place on Saturday where the team collected food for two hours outside Protea SuperSpar and another two hours at Pick n Pay. VDub chairwoman Shirlene Hartnick said: “We are ecstatic with the progress we have made thus far. We are so grateful to the management of Protea Spar and Pick n Pay for allowing us to collect this much-needed food in front of their stores. The reaction from the community of Komani has been enormous and we are grateful to each and everyone who have donated. This will surely go a long way in bringing a little relief to the Old Age Home”. The second phase will kick in for the next two weeks whereby members of Vdub will collect in neighbourhoods and from certain businesses. Levine said the third phase would take place on July 30 where proceeds and food collected would be handed over to the management of the Home. “Vdub Evolution is also ecstatic that a good Samaritan in Raymond Heuer Jnr of RH Fast Foods in conjunction with the club is going to sponsor a spit braai for the elderly for lunch on July 30. “The club is living through its slogan, ‘Driven by the passion for our communities’ and the outreach programmes will go a long way in helping the disadvantaged members of the community of Komani.” FOR A GOOD CAUSE: Members of the VDub Evolution Club in Komani, from left, Randi Levine, Chèvon Barclay, Rhonwyn Prince, Charmelle Leonie, Gino Redcliffe and Shirlene Hartnick collected food for the crisis-stricken John Vorster Old Age Home on Saturday. Last year, I was hosting a women’s conference in East London when I answered my calling. God told me to come back to Komani where I was insulted and hurt. I was not called for women only, but for the nations.” The church membership has grown from three to 90 over two months with the majority being young. “There are senior citizens who are slowly joining the church. My purpose is to win souls for heaven and to PROPHETESS DUDU QITSI worship God. Teaching the word of God is my No 1 priority.” Qitsi said the main difficulties she faced when starting the church was to find a building to rent in town, and dealing with misperceptions. “Some people have the mentality that I am poaching other people’s church members, and that the church is a money-making scheme, but that is not true. I have three businesses – two in East London and one in Komani – which generate income to maintain the church.” Qitsi is a Lukhanji FM presenter with a show on Wednesdays at 7.30pm to 9pm, Amanxeba Akho Abungqina Bakho (”Yo u r scars are your t e st i m o n y ”). Last year, she also started a foundation called Adopt a Girl Child and donates sanitary towels to girls in need. Services start on Wednesdays from 6pm to 8pm, Friday is worship night, Saturday is an outreach programme and the services on Sundays start from 10am to 1pm.
