The duo also earned $1,087 at the St. Paul (Ore.) Rodeo.
“We had a couple of rigs going and had some help driving and getting to
where we were going – that was a big part of it, trying to be rested and ready
when we got there,” Eaves said.
Smith’s uncle drove one rig and then Smith’s wife and grandpa drove the
other while the ropers flew from one rodeo to the next.
“It means everything – this isn’t a one-man show, you have to have help
and I just can’t say enough about it,” Eaves said.
Their Cowboy Christmas success bumped them up in the July 11
WEATHER GUARD® PRCA World Standings – Eaves went from ninth to
sixth and Smith went from eighth to sixth.
“To stay at pace with everyone, you have to win decent through the week,
and to climb a bit is hard to do this
time of year and we were tickled
with that,” Eaves said.
There wasn’t much time to
celebrate, as Smith and Eaves have
every intention of trucking through
the remainder of the 2017 season as
they pursue the Wrangler National
Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris
RANGER.
Eaves has qualified for the
Wrangler NFR five consecutive
times (2012-16) and Smith two
consecutive times (2015-16).
The 27-year-old Texan is vying for his third consecutive qualification to
the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER.
“In my head, it’s going to happen – just keep the hammer down and
riding bucking horses and it will happen,” Brown said.
Prior to Cowboy Christmas, Brown was fourth in the WEATHER
GUARD® PRCA World Standings with $65,398 at 56 rodeos.
By July 6, he was still No. 4 with $71,276 at 64 rodeos. After the Rooftop
Rodeo, he was third with $77,536 at 65 rodeos after a grand total of $12,138
won at eight Cowboy Christmas rodeos.
“It could have gone better – but, I’m very happy with it, and overall I’m
healthy and ready for the rest of the year,” Brown said.
Estes Park victory
Santa came at the midnight
hour for bareback rider Jake Brown.
His biggest win of Cowboy
Christmas happened on the final
day when his 85.5-point ride on
Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Rose
Puff was declared the top ride of
the Rooftop Rodeo at Estes Park,
Colo., on July 10.
“I just had a good little horse
called Rose Puff – I was on her in
2010, so she’s been around a long
time,” Brown said.
“It’s a good way to leave the
Fourth and it makes me ready for
the rest of the summer.”
Brown’s success at the
Rooftop Rodeo added up to
a $6,260 payday at the end of
Cowboy Christmas.
“That’s pretty awesome,
and being out here to live out our
dream is blessed beyond belief,”
Brown said.
“It just keeps me comfortable
and ready to go and confident for
the rest of July and August. Having
a good Christmas makes you
confident for Cheyenne and Salt
Lake and those big ones.”
