Our oldest son, Dr. Carl W. Ross, Jr. is a graduate of LSU, The University Of Saint Eustatius Medical School, and the Family Practice Residency Program of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, Arkansas. He currently is practicing at a hospital in Michigan, and is married to Mrs. Demitra (Taylor) Ross, graduate of the University of Michigan with a Master’s Degree from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. They have a son. She works for Teach for America. Our youngest son, Mr. Jonathan Payne Ross is a graduate of LSU and McNeese State University, and is a Registered Charge Nurse in the Emergency Room at a Hospital in lake Charles. He is married to Mrs. Lori (Simien) Ross, graduate of McNeese State University and Sales Marketing Representative at The Voice of Southwest Louisiana. They have three sons that fill her days as a mother. Our youngest daughter, Mrs. Danielle Renee Taylor, is also a graduate of LSU, and is married to Mr. Detrick L. Taylor, a graduate of McNeese State University, and he has a Master’s Degree from LSU Shreveport. She works in a laboratory at a local Chemical Plant, and he for Entergy. They have a daughter. All four of our children are graduates of Sacred Heart Saint Katherine Drexel Elementary School, and Saint Louis High School. The practice of Medicine is rewarding in that I am given the opportunity to provide medical care to my patients, but often advice in other areas of their lives. It is particularly rewarding in treating our Senior Citizens. These patients not only have increasing health issues, but experience the daily anxieties of their twilight years. It is extremely important for them to continue to seek medical care in these twilight years, but equally if not far more important for us as physicians to continue to treat them with the same respect and dignity that we offer -to our younger patients. Dr. and Mrs. Charles W. (Lucille Payne) Ross Sr. In regard to health care today there is much debate going on about “The Affordable Care Act” (Obamacare) passed on November 7, 2009, and the efforts of Congress to repeal and replace the same. Therein lies patient respect and dignity. 20 million Americans have Health Care Insurance because of the Affordable Health Care Act (Obamacare). To deny these Americans their right to health care in America, where we present ourselves to the world stating that “all men/women are created equal and are entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” in my opinion is morally wrong, and completely contradictory to “The Hippocratic Oath” that all physicians take. I would add to it a right to adequate medical care regardless of one’s social or economic status. In Louisiana, Medicaid has been expanded by the present Administration in Baton Rouge, and I applaud the same. Many other states have done the same. It is increasingly more difficult; however, to obtain appointments for these patients with Specialists in the various fields of medicine, mainly because of the reimbursement from Medicaid. What has happened to the “Golden Rule”, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you?” Congress should not seek to “cut Medicaid”, but as a government/state program expand it, and better yet make it mandatory for physicians to treat Medicaid patients and give them the same respect and dignity as their private insurance patients and or paying patients. I would call on all 50 states to make it Dr. & Mrs. Carl W. Ross, Sr. mandatory to treat our Senior Citizens with Medicare or our Underprivileged Citizens with Medicaid in order to have licensure in the 50 states. As many pastors and others have said, “I have never seen a U-Haul behind a hearse.” Fellow colleagues, whatever financial funds we have in the bank or assets we may have otherwise, we are not going to take any of it with us. We will take the “Good Works” that we have done for others. This may not be the “Popular Thought” of many physicians practicing medicine, but it is the right thing to do, and the “American” thing to do, less we as physicians fail to live out the standards that our “American Constitution” professes to the world. Yes, though my profession is medicine, I have a passion for politics. No, not all physicians play golf or tennis in their spare time as little as that may be. Though I have never sought any local or state office, and never will, I have had a passion for politics long before serving on the Student Senate at Southern University. It goes back to the Administration of President Dwight David Eisenhower and our involvement in the “Lebanon Conflict”. I wrote to President Eisenhower, and received a response from his White House Chief of Staff Llewelyn Sherman Adams along with copies of Congressional papers concerning the “Lebanon Conflict”. As a Roman Catholic, I wrote to then Pope John XXIII, now Saint Pope John XXIII concerning the “Third Letter of Fatima “that was supposed to be revealed to the world in 1960. In 1963 my greatest memory of actively participating in the Civil Rights Movement to rectify the situation in America at that time, was to physically be present and march in “’The March on Washington” led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on August 28, 1963, and be physically there among the other 250,000 Marchers as he delivered his “I Have A Dream Speech” on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. It was a “Speech For The Ages”. I have often told my family that I wrote a letter to President Richard M. Nixon, while residing at 624 Girard Street, N.W., while attending Howard University Medical School, and urged him to open up diplomatic talks and relations with The Peoples Republic Of China in the midst of “The Cold War”. I expressed to him that we “could not afford to continue to ignore a nation which at that time had about a billion people, and had Nuclear Weapons.” The United States and the Peoples Republic of China did not have Diplomatic Relations at that time, and did not until January 1, 1979. The visit of President Richard M. Nixon on February 21, 1972 to the Peoples Republic of China became “The Crown Jewel” of his Presidency. This was the first visit of a United States President to the Peoples Republic Of China since it was established in 1949. I tell my family that “The China Policy” was “My Policy” though President Nixon will forever receive the accolade for his trip opening up talks with the Peoples Republic Of China. I shall always think that the idea originated from the letter written by a Howard University Medical Intern, myself, in Washington, D.C. A search of the Presidential Archives of President Nixon probably would find that letter as it is well known that President Nixon did not destroy anything from his Presidency be it papers or tapes. Yes, I did attend the two Inaugural Parades of President Barack Obama, also events for the Ages, and the fruits of the labor of Dr. Martin Luther King and all the others who perished during the “Civil Rights Movement”. My interest in Politics continues to this day as does my passion for Classical Music by the Great composers. Yes, I do have a Hobby, “Tracking Hurricanes”. Having lived through Hurricane Audrey in 1957, and remembering the death and destruction it brought to our area, I have every year since 1957 tracked and plotted the position of Hurricanes on my Hurricane Tracking Charts. Little did I know at that time that I would experience Hurricane Hilda, Hurricane Betsy, and Hurricane Rita directly, and be on the fringes of Hurricanes Lili, Andrew and Ike. Yes, I tracked Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Gustav, Hurricane Camille, Hurricane Donna in 1960 and Hurricanes Lili and Isidore in 2002.
