SWLA sports By Tori Hebert Ready, Set, Hike! Geaux BLUE for the McNeese Cowboys The heat may stay in Southwest Louisiana for a few more months, but summer is coming to a close and fall will soon be here. For some, that means obsessing over everything pumpkin flavor, breaking out the cutest boots of the season, and admiring the changing leaf colors. For others, the end of summer only means one thing, back to football. When prep, college, and pro football are all in swing, Thursday through Monday are devoted to cheering on your favorite teams. Saturday nights are all about college football, and every home game weekend Common Street is one big blue and gold party. The McNeese Cowboys will have their first home game on September 9 against Florida Tech. Lance Guidry is in his second year as head coach, and he has a number of offensive and defensive players returning to his team. One notable is quarterback and Southland Conference and Louisiana Newcomer of the Year, James Tabary. The Cowboys are predicted to have a third place finish this year as released by the head coaches and sports information directors preseason poll. The poll was released on July 20 at the Southland Conference Football Media Day. Coach Guidry and the entire team are excited to be ranked third, but are ultimately focused on winning a national title. McNeese football practice begins August 2 and the first scrimmage game is set for August 12 in Cowboy Stadium. Eight Cowboys earned Pre-Season All Southland Conference accolades. First team members are Ross and Fuller, and Shelby, Crawley, Dodd, Gross-Whitaker, Livings, and Hill are all a part of second team.
