The Biossun bioclimatic system offers full 

remote control. Users can pivot the louvres in 

any direction they like to capture full sunlight 

or to provide shade, allowing the space 

underneath to be used to its fullest potential,

A Biossun louvre is made entirely from 

recyclable extruded aluminium and weighs 

just 1700g per metre. This lightweight and 

innovative product has been specially 

designed and patented. 

The louvres, are specially designed to offer 

natural ventilation by narrowing the space 

through which the air passes, thus 

accelerating the air flow and drawing it 

upward. Therefore, during hot periods, the 

Biossun pergola offers precise control over 

the perceived temperature 

In the closed position, the Biossun louvres 

provide effective protection against rain and 

bad weather by acting as a guttering system, 

protecting the patio beneath and its furniture 

(a built-in weather station automatically 

closes the louvres when it rains). 

The water is quickly and efficiently directed 

into the structure and out the base via an 

appropriate ground soakaway or can either 

be recovered for later use.

With the installation of 10mm tempered sliding glass 

panels, all sides of a Biossun structure can be made 

to shield you from the elements allowing you to 

enjoy your patio for longer. 

Secured by a top channel and guided by a lowprofile 

bottom rail, this simple closure system 

delivers a seamless and almost invisible solid wall 

which perfectly harmonises with the structure and 

surround. The glass panels enable the Biossun to 

blend in seamlessly with all architectural styles 

providing a pleasant feeling of openness and

Lighting 

No matter the model of your Biossun, 

you can create spectacular effects with 

a range of lighting solutions. 

Recessed spotlights are available as a 

central lighting system and can be 

positioned in a variety of arrangements 

(depending on dimensions). They come 

fitted with LEDs and PMMA lenses and 

the light intensity is controlled using 

the remote control. 

STRIP LED LIGHTING 

Use LED Strip Lighting around the 

ceiling perimeter to create the perfect 

ambience to suit your mood. Ideal for 

luminous decoration, you can vary the 

intensity and colour of the LED strips 

using the remote control. 

BIO 230 SPOTLIGHTS 

Integrated spotlights can be fitted into 

the beams for stylish surround lighting.

Rain and Wind Sensor 

In the event of unexpected rain, the system receives commands 

from a rain sensor and automatically closes the louvres. Similarly, 

the Biossun wind sensor, which can be set for winds of 50km/h 

upwards, will open the louvres to prevent wind damage due to 

pressure building up under the pergola. 

Remote Control & Smartcontrol® 

Use the multi-function remote control, or the Biossun 

Smartcontrol® application for smartphones and tablets, to swivel 

the louvres, alter the intensity of the lighting as well as turn it on 

and off, and lower and raise the vertical Zipsun® blinds. 

Flat-bottomed Bioclimatic Louvres 

While maintaining the same properties in terms of air circulation and 

natural ventilation and protection from the weather as the s-shaped 

louvres, these flat-bottomed alternatives give your patio a different 

look and are available up to a maximum span of 4.5metres (overall). 

Planters 

Ideal for use on a roof terrace, the planter fastens to the post and 

holds the structure in place by its weight, freeing you from the 

technical difficulties of anchoring. Made from aluminium in various 

colours, these ballasts can be filled with plants to create an added 

flourish to your Biossun pergola.

Frequently Asked Questions 

• What does "bioclimatic" mean exactly? How does the ventilation system work? The adjustable 

aluminium louvres are used not only as a practical sun or rain canopy, but they produce special "bioclimatic" 

effects with a noticeable result on felt temperature. When the louvres are in the ventilation position, the 

natural phenomenon of convection (warm air rising due to molecular volume increasing with temperature) 

creates a mild vertical movement of air, which escapes through the roof louvres. The special shape of these 

louvres narrows the air passage causing the air to accelerate and create a secondary phenomenon whereby 

lower air layers are also drawn upwards. The overall result is a pleasant, cooling air flow and comfortable 

temperature. 

• What is the difference between the s-shaped louvres and the flat-bottomed louvres? Functionally there 

is no difference between the s-shaped louvres and the flat-bottomed louvres; both prevent excessive heat 

build-up under the roof and provide a pleasant cooling ("bioclimatic") effect, and when it rains they can both 

be closed shut to give a fully water-proof seal against bad weather. However, in contrast with the s-shaped 

louvres, the flat louvres can be produced in greater length (450cm compared to 390cm s-shaped louvres). 

This means you can run the louvres over a larger area without the need for separating the roof into two 

sections. 

• Can the louvres be fully closed and sealed against rain and bad weather? Both types of louvres (sshaped 

and flat) can be fully opened and closed shut again. They even work automatically - through the rain 

sensor, which immediately closes the louvres as soon as it starts to rain (providing a water-tight seal). 

Furthermore, the structure’s gutter beams and support posts are designed to channel and evacuate rainwater 

or collect it, as required. 

• How many posts are necessary for a Biossun pergola? This all depends on where the pergola is to be 

placed. If the canopy is to be integrated into an enclosed solid terrace with supporting walls, then no posts 

are necessary. In this instance you will, however, need to install an alternative for water evacuation and 

drainage. If the pergola is to be installed against a house wall, then only one or two posts are generally 

needed, with the other sides of the louvres frame carried by the walls. The number of posts also increases 

according to the number of corners around which the pergola is built. A free-standing pergola, however, will 

always need at least four pillars to support the aluminium roof frame. If the size of the construction should be 

extended, then the number of posts needed is almost unlimited so the roof area can be properly supported.

FAQS BIOSSUN 

• Is it possible to install a Biossun on a roof terrace? Yes, due to its robust aluminium frame, a 

Biossun pergola structure is perfectly suited for mounting on the wall of a house / on the corner of 

a house / in a u-shaped courtyard. 

• What is the effect of high winds on the pergola? As a general rule the Biossun pergola is wind 

resistant! However, if the wind speed starts to exceed 50 km/h the pressure under the roof (if the 

louvres are in the closed position) will increase exponentially, therefore the louvres should be 

opened to alleviate this situation. With the help of the wind sensor this will be done automatically 

when set for winds of 50km/h upwards (NB. wind sensor commands overrule rain sensor commands 

so as to reduce the air pressure on the roof). 

• How many colours is a Biossun pergola available in? The Bio 120 frame comes in in 5 different 

colours (RAL) with white being the only louvre colour available. With the Bio 180 and Bio 230, there 

are over 300 RAL colours and finishes for both louvres and structure. 

• What ground preparation is needed for a Biossun pergola structure? You need a stable 

foundation so that the patio roof stands securely (As a rule of thumb the total weight of a Biossun 

pergola is 20 kg/m2). We can carry out the groundworks including electricity and water supply if 

required. Please ask for more details at the design stage. 

• Do I need planning permission? Usually a Biossun pergola installation falls within permitted 

development but as with all building work, the owner of the property (or land) in question is 

ultimately responsible for complying with the relevant planning rules and building regulations 

(regardless of the need to apply for planning permission and/or building regulations approval or 

not). 

• What is the delivery time for a Biossun pergola? What are the payment terms? Once you have 

chosen your pergola size and model, colour scheme and location, we will create the production 

drawings including all components, services, and assembly details. Once you have approved the 

drawings and accepted our T&Cs then a deposit of 40% of the total amount is due and production 

of the individual components of the new building can begin. The preparation of the individual 

components usually takes 8-10 weeks. Prior to installation a further 50% of the total amount is 

needed before the actual installation can commence. Once the structure has been assembled and 

tested, and everything is to your satisfaction, the remaining 10% of the total amount is required.
