Hugo—here enjoying a
cigar while hanging from
a Gombe tree—was a
perfectionist, much to
Jane’s frustration. He
wouldn’t photograph
even remarkable chimp
behavior if the light and
exposure weren’t right.
Always innovating, Hugo
scattered sand from the
beach on the ground at
Gombe’s feeding station
into the chimps’ faces.
Jane eventually got a
Super 8mm camera
chimps at any moment,
regardless of the lighting.
