How Temp-Power, Inc. is Saving TIME & MONEY with the AEMP Telematic Integration By: Chris Crafton, President, Temp-Power, Inc. & Heather Benac, Marketing Manger, Point-of-Rental Software Those in our rental industry who supply heavy equipment are familiar with the challenges associated with tracking equipment usage hours and the actual equipment locations at any given time. However, thanks to advances in technology for equipment metering and GPS, many of these struggles are only remnants of the past. 7 POINT-OF-RENTAL.COM / SPRING <strong>2015</strong>
By accessing accurate usage hours from the office, rental stores are able to schedule with confidence necessary maintenance. This remote management saves time by cutting out in-person meter readings, or more catastrophic, equipment failure due to lack of proper maintenance scheduling. Plus, it helps ensure accurate rental usage billing. The GPS location is also easily accessible directly through the counter system. The driver can effortlessly pull up the contract, select the option to view the current location on a map, and generate the present coordinates directly on the pickup request for the driver. This empowers the driver by providing current data for precise pickup routes. Why the Need for the AEMP Telematic Integration? While metering and GPS tracking solved many challenges, new ones arose in its wake. Each provider of the telemetric and GPS tracking provided the data in their own format, rendering it virtually impossible for software providers to maintain compatibility for the many manufacturers and providers of data. That was the status quo until the collaborative efforts of AEM and the Association of Equipment Management Professionals (AEMP) set forth the Telematic API Standard. This regulation now includes standardized communication protocols allowing the transfer of telemetric information to end user business enterprise systems. It also enables the end user to employ their own business software to collect and analyze asset data from mixed equipment fleets without the need to work across multiple telematics provider applications. Point-of-Rental Enterprise has been compatible with GPS providers for awhile, and now offers an entirely new level of convenience and accuracy with the AEMP Telematic integration. Point-of-Rental’s AEMP integration provides easily accessible data for heightened precision and time-saving innovation. Many rental businesses today are beginning to adapt this time and money saving integration. One of these is Temp- Power, Inc., a Point-of-Rental customer based in Manassas, Virginia. How Temp-Power Began In response to the exploding home building market, Temp-Power, Inc. opened its doors in 2005. Specializing in generator rentals, the company serves the Virginia, Maryland and Washington D.C. markets. Over time it has developed markets for residential and commercial construction, as well as powering events such as weddings, festivals, concerts and more. In just nine years, their fleet has grown from eight towable generator sets to over 85 at the end of 2014. Making the Switch to Point-of-Rental Software Once the business was firmly established they were faced with the need to upgrade their existing system or replace it altogether. With recommendations from two local competitors they began looking at Point-of-Rental’s Enterprise software. The upgrade of the old system would have been 50% of the cost of Enterprise but the company still would have been on their out of date, clumsy software. Temp-Power, Inc. chose Point-of-Rental Enterprise because of its ease of use for new and existing employees. Their former system required many more steps to perform frequently used actions and also did not integrate well with their accounting software. Enterprise has been an excellent solution for the company; offering many advanced features while increasing efficiency and profitability. Moving to the AEMP Integration The primary goal with the AEMP integration for Temp-Power, Inc. was maintenance tracking. The cost of monthly monitoring is less than half that of physically visiting the machines to check hours. With equipment usage time updating to the Point-of-Rental Enterprise software hourly, the maintenance due reports are always current allowing Temp-Power, Inc. to efficiently schedule services and reduce down time. They can now also verify that hours are correct on contracts, see if a machine is in use and confirm its location.This information is used to sell their service to customers. It is still too early for hard numbers as to how the integration has improved Temp- Power, Inc. operations since they are still equipping their fleet with tracking units. At this time they have 20 installed and hope to have all completed by the end of the first quarter. After the initial cost for hardware, the monitoring is roughly $15 per unit. Looking to the Future Temp-Power, Inc. is working to go even further with tracking equipment to monitor real-time performance data such as engine RPM, temperature and oil pressure.
