Bangladesh’s Mehedi Hasan Miraz is caught short of the crease during day two of their second Test against Australia in Chittagong yesterday
Nasir rues falling 100-150 runs short
• Ali Shahriyar Bappa
from Chittagong
Tigers batsman Nasir Hossain admitted
that Bangladesh fell 100-150
runs short in their first innings of
the second and final Test match as
Australia displayed a good batting
performance on day two at Zahur
Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium yesterday.
Bangladesh missed two chances
to dismiss opener David Warner
as the Australia vice-captain
again played a crucial knock and
anchored his side to a first-innings
lead.
“I think we fell short by 100-150
runs, looking at the wicket. We
should have scored at least 400-
450 as our first innings total. We
would have had a better day had
those been taken. They would have
been three down. The catch at forward
short leg was a 50-50 chance
and these are tough ones. And in
the second chance, the ball kept
low for the stumping. So it was
difficult too,” Nasir told the media
after the day’s play.
Australia are in the driving seat
after day two as they are only 80
behind Bangladesh’s first innings
total of 305.
But Nasir admitted things could
soon turn around for them within
one or two hours of a good performance
today and hoped Bangladesh
will bounce back on day
three.
“We are still ahead by 80. It
is hard to predict things in cricket.
But I think we are slightly on
the backfoot. A lot can however,
change in an hour in a Test match. I
believe our bowlers did well. Warner
doesn’t bat slowly but he did
that [yesterday]. Only thing was
that we didn’t take wickets. The
match can change any time. We are
not thinking about the result at this
stage,” explained Nasir.
Bangladesh were bowling a legstump
line constantly and Nasir
said the Tigers tried to take advantage
of the rough areas on the pitch
as there was not much turn available.
“There was a lot of help for
the bowlers in the Mirpur Test.
But there isn’t enough bounce
here for the bowlers. The ball
isn’t turning, especially those on
the stumps. It is turning off the
rough,” he said.
“We were both attacking and defensive
[yesterday]. Shakib bowled
much on the offside to Warner,
which is hard for him. [Steve] Smith
swept two fours though he doesn’t
sweep. Deliveries on stumps were
not turning much. We wanted to
block Smith and Warner who are
free scoring. We were trying to
force them to make mistakes,” he
concluded. •
