‘Monday is the only day we are allowed out of our old people’s home, the Battleaxe Barracks,’ said a wispy old lady in a breathy way. ‘Only allowed out for one hour a week,’ said the old gentleman, whose face was all wrinkled up like a walnut. ‘But Monday is our happiest day because we are allowed out so perhaps we should call it the Friday Club as most people say Friday is the happiest day of the week as it’s the last day of the week before the weekend,’ said a hat and then Beaky realised there was someone under it but he was so small that you could only see his hat above the table. ‘Don’t be barking mad!’ said a sharp woman sharply. ‘It’s Monday so we can’t call it the Friday Club because it’s Monday. You simply can’t have a Friday Club on a Monday.’ ‘Yes but you can’t have a Monday Club on a Monday if the Monday Club is meant to be happy because everyone knows Monday is the worst day of the week and Friday is the best day so we should call it the Friday Club even though it is a Monday and then we would be happy on Monday.’ ‘But we are happy on Monday.’ ‘But we aren’t on Friday because we don’t have the Monday Club.’ 16
‘Perhaps we should have a sad Monday Club on Friday and a happy Friday Club on Monday.’ ‘Sorry to interrupt,’ said a quiet voice that had not spoken before. ‘Could somebody be awfully kind and tell me, is it Tuesday today?’ The group groaned and fell back into silence staring into their tea cups. After a while the wispy lady with the breathy voice said, ‘Strange. My tea leaves are telling me it’s Wednesday. But then you can see into the future if you look at your tea leaves so perhaps it is Wednesday in my tea cup but Monday out of it.’ ‘What happens if you sip a bit of Wednesday?’ asked the hat. ‘Ah, that would make it Tuesday in your mouth and Monday sort of round you but Wednesday still in your tea cup.’ ‘I see,’ said the hat. Everyone sighed. After a while the sharp lady said in a loud shrill voice that made everyone jump, ‘It’s Thursday today!’ ‘Can’t be the Monday Club then,’ said the walnut. ‘Unless you mean it’s Thursday in your tummy if you have swallowed the tea and it’s got a bit ahead of time.’ The kitchen clock struck half past four. 17
