Red Riding Hood as the play and this somebody,<br />
actually somebodies, suggested we call Red Riding<br />
Hood, the girl, Josephine but I did put my foot down<br />
at that and thought Rose would be a much better<br />
name. So Susie, it looks like Sophie and Cressida have<br />
chosen you to be Rose ... that is Red Riding Hood!’<br />
‘Me! Red Riding Hood! Roth!’ shrieked Susie in<br />
fear and delight. ‘Oh I don’t ... me in the thpotlight!<br />
... I couldn’t pothibly ... oh I might ... oh thank you!’<br />
Susie was over the moon. When she had first<br />
joined the DDC she had been as shy as a mouse too<br />
scared to sniff at the finest cheese. Now Sophie and<br />
Cressida thought she was good enough to play Rose!<br />
‘What is Shimmermist?’ asked Abby.<br />
‘Shimmermist,’ explained Beaky, going all<br />
floaty and wobbly, ‘is a mysterious character who<br />
shimmers in the mist and tells the story in a magical<br />
mysterious way.’<br />
Abby looked unconvinced. She was more at home<br />
on ponies than shimmering mistily about the stage ...<br />
‘It’s odd that we have more extra characters than<br />
people,’ said Lou. ‘Look, I’m Mother and Mist.’<br />
‘That’s because there are,’ said Beaky. It was too<br />
hard to explain right now about The Battleaxers (Literary<br />
