Bush Survival Skills

and forested beauty. It provides the perfect environment for 

a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience in stunning wilderness 

environments. This will challenge young people both physically 

and spiritually. It will be safe, full of fun and exciting, as they 

learn the basics of survival training to increase conf idence and 

their abilities too. 

Students will totally immerse themselves in the experience, gaining 

important life skills along the way, which will last them a lifetime 

to become the young stars of the future. Adventure and learning 

lie in wait, to lift your teenager to new heights of success. 

All outdoor educational activities benef it the growth and 

development of young people, but often there is a lack of 

knowledge when it comes to instructors and locations which 

aren’t ideal as the perfect training ground. For this reason, Black 

Label Experience has partnered exclusively with the much 

sought after wilderness adventure experts, Waypost Scenic 

Bush Adventures, to provide the ultimate wilderness experience. 

Students will remember the experience for years to come. This 

experience is led by a highly trained military senior survival 

instructor, who has real insight and knowledge into the world 

of wilderness survival.

About Te Urewera 7 day Wilderness Hike 

This adventure will truly test program participants and strengthen 

their all-round development. The instructors have exceptional 

skills, experience and knowledge, so students can navigate their 

way around the adventure and survival training, coming out on 

top, safe and enriched too. 

The food is ‘bush tucker’ style, which is using the natural resources 

around them to provide sustenance and energy, just the way the 

Maori had, years before. Bush tucker is complemented by 

nutritious food, using local and organic ingredients where possible, 

and catering to individual needs and tastes. 

Participants will be enjoying thesplendor of rivers, streams, forests 

and the bush. This course is educational, and teaches students 

about environmental issues, sustainability, survival skills and more. 

Completing this training in one of the most stunning parts of 

New Zealand will add to the adrenaline rush adventure. Students 

will spend their nights in either simple cabins or in self-built 

‘bivies’, or bush shelters. They receive private tuition from the 

guides, to get them ready for the challenges that lie ahead. 

It is also a fun-filled adventure, where they get to step out of their 

comfort zone in a nurturing way and meet and bond with new 

people in a magnificent environment.

About Te Urewera 7 day Wilderness Hike 

The interactions that take place during the course are rich 

opportunities for implementing, recognizing and affirming 

leadership skills, teamwork and interpersonal communication. 

What can you expect? Program participants will embark on 

a completely unique adventure that will push them beyond 

their boundaries, allowing them to grow both physically and 

mentally. Psychological survival skills are also taught to improve 

students’ personal sense of well-being and mental aptitude in 

everyday life. These psychological skills are incredibly important 

as they reduce anxiety and improve risk judgment. The courses 

are educational, fun, adventurous, challenging, purposeful and 

life changing too. 

Your young adventurers will grow in so many ways, including excellence, by 

persevering in the face of difficulties; innovation, inquiry and curiosity by 

thinking critically, creatively and ref lectively; ecological sustainability, which 

includes caring for the environment; integrity, which is about being honest, 

responsible and accountable. 

What will they get out of it? The experience will strengthen 

their inner resources and creativity, by learning resilience, 

having an overall sense of well-being, raising their self-esteem 

as well as confidence. Concentration skills will also be improved 

along with the ability to think outside of the box, coming up 

with answers to challenging problems. 

The course runs for seven thrilling days.

Day 1 

Arrive Hawkes Bay 

To stretch those legs, they will take an easy 15-minute walk 

through a gorgeous forest, to discover the hidden nature of the 

Shine Falls. 

This is one of Hawkes Bay’s most spectacular waterfalls. It has 

an interesting shape, which reminds one of a hooded figure. 

One of the most outstanding features is the rocky paddock that 

students will cross. 

Another 20 minute drive, leads them to the next stop where 

students can soak up the beauty of Lake Tutira, which is a 

wildlife refuge brimming over with birdlife and surrounded 

by weeping willows. 

After a picnic on the shores of Lake Tutira, another half hour 

drive takes all the students to the base accommodation. 

Students get settled and then the first lecture and demonstration 

of bush craft skills kicks off the experience. 

Students will be greeted at Napier Airport by their 

course instructor followed by a short drive which 

takes them to the amazing Shine Falls. 

They will then practice some of these skills. Dinner follows, 

and an evening of team bonding takes place.

Wilderness Preparation 

Following a hearty breakfast, students spend the day receiving 

lectures and demonstrations of bushcraft skills, after which 

they will learn to apply those skills. 

Bushcraft skills are a delightful blend of a craft and indigenous 

knowledge of the natural world. Students will understand the 

basic skills which are needed to provide food, fire and shelter 

to meet their basic needs. 

It is a learning adventure where opportunities and questions 

about. The day is filled with fun and purposeful activities which 

are not only educational but also highly enjoyable. 

After dinner, students will be learning fire lighting skills, 

followed by a toasting of marshmallows in true New Zealand 

style.

Day 3 & 4 

Te Urewera Wilderness 

Nights 1 and 2 

After breakfast students are taken to the Te Urewera National 

Park. Before entering the bush, everyone has something to eat 

to build up that energy. Everyone is now in bush survival mode. 

About three hours into the bush, camp is set up. The next two 

nights are spent learning about how to survive in the bush. 

Tents are provided but young adventurers are encouraged to 

build their own bush shelter to sleep in. They will come 

face- to-face with a wide range of wilderness skills including 

shelters, traps and sneers, wild foods, escape and evasion, bush 

location and navigation. 

Students are taken outside of their comfort zone in a safe and 

nurturing way, which enables them to develop all-round life 

skills, see dreams and possibilities, and grow self-esteem and 

confidence. This challenge will stimulate their curiosity and 

imagination. Their sense of identity will be strengthened, which 

opens the door to being a lifelong learner. New Zealand’s 

stunning environment offers the perfect backdrop for 

strengthening key competencies; thinking; managing self; 

using language, symbols and texts; relating to others; while 

participating and contributing.

Prepare for Hunting 

Students have their last breakfast in the bush, and are shown 

how to leave without a trace of them being there. By late 

afternoon, everyone will be back at the cabin accommodation 

where hot showers will be a welcome relief! Now preparations 

start for the hunting expedition. 

Hunting is an interesting and exciting experience. A real 

adventurous spirit will f ill the air as students are provided with 

the necessary tools to approach any challenging situation with 

knowledge and conf idence, as they learn how to shelter 

themselves from the elements, hunting and tracking skills, 

safety skills, how to deal with all weather conditions, 

understanding the animals that they will be hunting, as well 

as how to use traps and sneers. Students will also understand 

how to become their own best resource as they prepare for 

their hunting adventure the following day.

Being prepared for any situation is an important life skill to 

learn for anyone, which will enhance the quality of everyday 

life as students embark on this life-changing adventure.

Hunting Expedition 

Depending on the student’s age and ability they may wish to 

participate in the shooting of a goat, skinning, curing andcooking. 

Also the opportunity to shoot a firearm, under very strict 

supervision is also optional. The use of a firearm with qualified 

supervision complies with New Zealand law and really adds 

to a young person’s experience. 

Of course safety is our number one priority and the use of a 

weapon will only occur with safety in mind. If students wish 

to use a firearm, under the supervision of a full firearms license 

holder, they will be required to complete a psychological and 

competency questionnaire. If they aren’t interested in using 

live ammunition, they can use a hunting bow or other 

personalized hunting techniques. Let the hunt begin! 

Everyone is taken off to a private hunting block where 

they will develop their skills in traps and sneers, 

tracking and other hunting skills. 

After a day’s hunting they return to the cabin where the catch 

of the day will form part of the evening meal. The evening 

will 

be spent celebrating achievements and discussing all that was 

shared and learned.

Depart Hawkes Bay 

If flight times allow, students can see some of the hidden 

treasures that lie in wait around Hawkes Bay, such as stunning 

walks, waterfalls or they might even want to experience the 

Art Deco city of Napier for something special. 

Napier is famous for its jazz-age architecture which rose out 

of the rubble of a devastating earthquake and subsequent 

fires in 1931. Students can take a guided tour if time allows 

to see all the colorful buildings and learn more about the 

history of this famous town. 

Students can also visit the place with the longest name which 

is in central Hawkes Bay. It is called Taumata whakatangi 

hangakoauau o tamatea turi pukakapiki maunga horo nuku 

pokai whenua kitanatahu . 

Another special thing to do is wake up early and 

experience the stunning sunrise, as Hawkes Bay is 

the first place in the world to see the sun every day. 

This Maori word translates into English as “the place where 

Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and 

swallowed mountains, known as ‘landeater,’ played his flute 

to his loved one.” 

Students will all take home workbooks, certificates and their 

very own personal survival kits!

Wilderness Experiences Instructor, Group and Accommodation Information 

Accommodation 

Accommodation is simple and appropriate 

for the course contents. Cabins are 

comfortable, dry and warm. Tenting and 

outdoor shelters built by the participants, in 

stunning locations, are their accommodation 

in the wilderness. 

Catering 

Food provided will include some 

New Zealand’s ‘bush tucker’ to add to the 

experience as well as meat processed and 

cooked by the group. All basic food will 

be supplemented with high quality 

nutritious food, using organic and local 

ingredients where possible. Menu options 

are provided and able to cater to different 

tastes and needs. 

Equipment 

We emphasize the use of high quality and 

appropriate survival gear for the complete 

safety of students. To ensure the 

experience is safe and comfortable, all 

wilderness gear is provided for the 

duration of the program. You will need 

to provide personal items, like durable 

hiking boots as well as personal thermal 

wear and suitable outdoor wear.

Safety Management and Group Sizes 

Safety is our top priority. 

We comply with all National Safety Standards, which means 

that we are committed to safety and quality. 

As the nature of our courses includes some risks, which cannot 

be completely eliminated, all activities are well planned out 

using Risk Assessment Management Profiles. Our instructors 

are extremely competent and qualified to provide the courses 

and as registered New Zealand teachers are experienced, police 

vetted, first aid qualified, hold appropriate driving and firearms 

licenses, and have a long history of experience working 

specifically with youth. 

The exclusivity of our programs means that the instructor to 

client ratio is not more than 1:4. Generally the group size will 

be limited to a maximum of eight. 

Reasonable and practical steps are taken to ensure the 

physical and emotional safety of those involved. 

Small groups ensure that each student receives quality learning 

and safety is maximized. All groups which include female 

students will include a female instructor.

Instructor Profiles 

Simon 

Simon is an ex-Royal New Zealand Air Force Senior Survival 

Training Instructor. He has completed several international 

Air Force Combat Survival Courses as well as Survival, Evasion, 

Resistance & Escape Training. Simon has experienced Jungle 

training in Australia, Fiji and Malaysia. Alpine courses were 

completed in New Zealand’s beautiful National Parks. 

Simon worked with the Royal New Zealand Navy on Sea 

Survival. He has worked extensively in all New Zealand bush 

environments. As one of the first Senior Trainers for the 

RNZAF Survival Training Centre, his expertise in various 

survival situations was put to the test in several overseas 

deployments. Participating in any Black Label Exclusive 

Wilderness Course will guarantee you are getting genuine 

Special Forces Survival expertise and training. 

Master of Education; Post Graduate Diploma Teaching; Bachelor of Arts 

(Sociology / Psychology); Diploma Sport & Recreation; RNZAF Diploma 

Physical Education (Survival & Expedition); RNZAF Defence Supervisor 

Certif icate; RNZAF Teaching Practice Certif icate. 

After leaving the Air Force, Simon followed his love of teaching 

and became a Primary School Principal. His other experiences 

in life include time as a stockman in the outback of Australia 

and a professional hunter in the Northern Territory of Australia. 

Simon enjoys exploring the New Zealand forest, hunting and 

fishing, scuba diving, and small-scale farming.

Mieke 

Mieke is a Disaster Management and Emergency Specialist, 

adding a great element to our team of professionals. She is 

passionate about people’s resiliencies and abilities to cope with 

challenging situations. Having spent years as a registered trauma 

counselor, this has given her plenty of insights into human 

behavior and traumatic situations that she has had to deal with 

while helping people. 

She firmly believes attitude, knowledge and confidence are the 

key factors in getting through even the toughest of circumstances. 

Master of Education; Bachelor of Arts (Sociology / 

Psychology); Intermediate Certif icate in Counselling. 

Mieke was a Senior Lecturer and Researcher in Disaster, 

Survival and Emergency Management at a New Zealand 

university for over ten years. She has also published several 

articles and presented at international conferences. Mieke now 

thrives on being a survival instructor, freelance writer and 

researcher. She also enjoys self-sufficiency , foraging for edible 

wild food, sharing knowledge with like-minded people and 

helping her children to create a better world.

the necessary bookings for the outdoor adventure to ensure firm bookings are held for the client. The final non-refundable payment of the final balance is due one month 

before the outdoor adventure or on arrival in New Zealand. Black Label Experience Ltd has the right to cancel any arrangements and bookings made for the client if full 

payment is not received before the event or arrival in country and will treat the trip/event as a canceled booking until full payment is received.
