It is also a place resonant with history. It was here that Maori
and Europeans f irst met, exchanged goods, language and
culture, and created a new nation, making it one of NewZealand’s
most culturally and historically signif icant sites. The Bay of
Islands Outdoor Education Program is situated at The Landing,
a spectacular property with its own rich history. It was a landing
place for both of the migrant races that settled in New Zealand,
making it a cradle of the nation’s history.
North Island
Great Barrier Island
For thousands of years it has sheltered Auckland’s harbour
from the relentless swells of the Pacif ic Ocean, creating a
boating paradise for all to enjoy.
Great Barrier Island is also called ‘Aotea’, which means cloud, by
Ngati Rehua, the island is culturally significant to this iwi (tribe).
Aotea is home to a community of around 800 residents, and has
been continuously inhabited for much of the past 1000 years.
Māori oral history speaks of early occupation, and of Ngāti Wai
iwi (tribe) and its chief Rehua settling on Aotea. The entire island
is sacred land to Māori. Its forests, bays and rivers tell stories of
journeys, battles, living off the land and settlement. Program
participants will experience the island’s culture and heritage by
visiting some of the fascinating historic sites.
Great Barrier Island is a large island with a small
population. The forests, beaches and bays provide
stunning beauty and also amazing scope for all kinds
of wilderness adventures.
The island is just 35 kilometers long and 15 kilometers wide
at its widest point. The Great Barrier Island program is situated
on the edge of Karaka Bay on a 230 hectare property in its
own secluded bay surrounded by pastureland, regenerating
indigenous bush and mature trees.
