South Island
Doubtful Sound
Visitors often feel humbled yet uplifted by the atmosphere of
solitude in the presence of the superb grandeur of Doubtful
Sound. Jagged mountains rear their heads into the sky. More
than 200 days of rain a year ensure not a tree branch is left bare,
with moss draping every nook. The forest is intensely green.
Young adventurers will experience glorious days filled with
the hues of green and blue, while another day the landscape
can be shrouded in mist with low cloud draping over the tops.
Doubtful Sound is the deepest of all the f iords at 420 meters,
and is the second longest f iord at 40 kilometers long. It is
sometimes called ‘the Sound of Silence’. There are three distinct
arms off the main f iord and many hundreds of waterfalls. Main
waterfalls include the Browne Falls, cascading 619 meters to
the f iord near the beautiful Hall Arm, and the Helena Falls at
Deep Cove.
Doubtful Sound is a f iord and popular
tourist destination located in the
Fiordland region of New Zealand.
The soaring 900 meter sea cliff of Commander Peak is an
imposing sight at the entrance to Hall Arm. Doubtful Sound
is home to Bottlenose dolphins, New Zealand fur seals and
the Fiordland crested penguin.
