Day 1
Arrive in Queenstown
‘Kia Ora’ – welcome to New Zealand! Students will be met
at Queenstown Airport by their guide and then be
transferred to their accommodation, which is situated on
the shores of Lake Wakatipu.
They will be staying at Lake Wakatipu Oaks Club Resort, just
a short drive into the heart of Queenstown. It is a truly special
place to stay, with panoramic and stunning views of the lake
and the Remarkables mountain range. This is an unbelievable
sight to see. Lake Wakatipu is unusual in the fact that it is
shaped like a lightning bolt! It is also the third largest lake in
New Zealand. They will be in luxury modern self-contained
units with first-class resort facilities. Being in a self-contained
unit means students are able to make their own breakfast in
the morning.
Next comes spending some time at the local Kiwi House, with
a private viewing of this shy native bird of New Zealand.
Students will learn about the community support and
conservation involved in keeping the Kiwi safe from becoming
extinct. Time will also be spent with other residents of the
Kiwi House such as the Tuatara (a native lizard type reptile)
and other native birds.
In the evening they will make their way to the Skyline Gondola
as they take in the sights of Queenstown as the sun sets, while
enjoying a buffet dinner.
Today marks the day of spending time amongst an ancient
native beech forest overlooking Queenstown. This is followed
by a spectacular and exhilarating ziplining adventure. Students
will take the Skyline Gondola back up Bob’s Peak to the Ziptrek
ziplining course.
Over a period of three hours students explore the Kea Tour
trail then indulge in a kilometer fly down the hill to get their
adrenaline racing, with some of the most spectacular views in
New Zealand. This unbelievable adventure is followed by
returning back to central Queenstown for lunch before a hike
up Queenstown Hill in the afternoon. They will be met by
breath taking views of the town and nearby Coronet Peak.
Queenstown
Dinner is served, and students will get to spend some time in
a local restaurant followed by an early evening. The following
Day 3
From Queenstown to
Doubtful Sound
Students will leave Queenstown early in the morning and travel
along the shores of Lake Wakatipu to Manapouri and Fiordland.
Manapouri is the gateway to Doubtful Sound. This is a two
day adventure which starts with a cruise across Lake Manapouri
and a drive over Wilmot Pass before arriving in Doubtful Sound
and the accommodation at Deep Cove Hostel.
Over the two days students will explore Doubtful Sound, one of
the more remote areas on Earth. With no access to phone coverage
students will enjoy being close to nature as they discover some
the many arms of the fjord, an untouched world of mountains,
lush rainforest and dramatic landscapes that will take their breath
away.
In the afternoon they will take a 6 to 7 kilometer walk, with
an easy incline, to Helena Falls. Students will spend some time
at the base of the falls, a natural beauty. If the rain has been
held at bay, students will rock hop to the base of the falls, for
another adrenaline boost. Once the adventure is over, they
will return back to Deep Cove Hostel for a group dinner.
Day 4
From Doubtful Sound
to Wanaka
The sound of nature will gently wake students up, with the
stunning sounds of the chirping of native birds and cascading
waterfalls. What a wonderful way to come out of a slumber.
Next they take to the water exploring Doubtful Sound in kayaks.
Students get some time to spend with the local wildlife such
as the dusky or bottle nose dolphins, Fiordland Crested
Penguins and New Zealand Fur Seals.
If the weather is not favourable for kayaking, students will
experience a cruise in Doubtful Sound.
After lunch they return back to the busy world of civilization
while travelling over Wilmot Pass and Lake Manapouri, ending
the day in the lakeside town of Wanaka.
After a two day nature adventure, students will be treated to a
hearty dinner at a local restaurant, to recharge. Then it’s back
to their accommodation for a peaceful and deep sleep.
Day 5
Native Shrub Planting
Today gives students a really great opportunity to give back to
nature. Wanaka is a Maori word which translates to mean the
“place of learning”. Your teenagers will learn how to give back to
the environment by helping a local native plant nursery to grow
native plants followed by planting their very own native plant in
a special nature reserve on the edge of Lake Wanaka. Afte r this
experience young adventurers will have a thrilling 4WD safari to
learn what life is like on a real New Zealand farm.
With grazing sheep, cattle and red deer nearby, they’ll get to
enjoy an alpine picnic high in the mountains overlooking
glistening Lake Wanaka, snow-capped peaks and glaciers.
Students learn about the importance of looking after the
environment, having a deeper connection to the plight of our
planet, and building their confidence and self-esteem as they
realize that they have made a difference in the world. This is
a lifelong lesson, which they will carry through their daily lives.
and 4WD Farm Safari
After this special day of giving back, students return back to
Wanaka for dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 6
From Wanaka to Queenstown
Two hours are spent on Lake Wakatipu where students learn
how to be patient as they learn to fish. Hopefully they will
have the opportunity to take their own fish they’ve caught off
their hook. As the charter boat can only take a maximum of
8 the group will be split in two trips. Today also marks the
thrilling ride on the Shotover Jet, followed by a more relaxing
experience at the historic gold mining town of Arrowtown,
while waiting for the other group to finish their fishing trip.
This is a day full of adventure, as well as learning the life skill
of fishing and fun, which is a great combination.
Any of the fish caught will be taken back to the apartments.
The guide will take the catches back to the Oaks Club Resort
to cook up for a light meal later in the afternoon.
Fishing is certainly a popular sport in New Zealand and students
will get to learn the art of this skill. Lake Wakatipu is rich in f ish,
where they’ll f ind Salmon, Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout.
Queenstown is well known for the famous Fergburger, voted
as one of the best burgers in the world! Here your youngsters
will get to experience the culinary delight of this amazing burger,
with soft drinks or juices on the lakefront if the weather is
suitable, or taking in the views from the warmth of the Oak
Club Resort’s apartments.
Day 7
Orientation Day in Queenstown
Today is about learning the ways of the Maori culture, as
students spend time at the nearby Pinewood Lodge which is
nestled in picturesque alpine scenery. Pinewood is a convenient
2-minute ride away from the Queenstown Bike park and a 7-
minute walk from the energetic centre of Queenstown! This is
where the only hangi pit in Queenstown is located. Hangiis
the traditional Maori meal of meat and vegetables cooked
amongst hot stones in the ground. Students will spend time
at Pinewood Lodge helping with the start of the hangi
cooking process.
This day is about learning to work together, sharing ideas and
understanding how to compromise in certain situations,
complete navigational challenges in the stunning surroundings
of Glenorchy and develop all these brilliant skills.
The hangi will take a few hours to cook, so with a few hours
to spare, students will travel to nearby Glenorchy for an
afternoon of orienteering.
Following this, students return to Queenstown and experience
a traditional Maori greeting at Pinewood Lodge with a ‘Powhiri’
(Maori welcome) and cultural performance before enjoying
the hangi meal. Students will have the opportunity to interact
with their hosts and find out about Maori culture.
Day 8
Depart Queenstown
This opportunity of a lifetime will help your teenager develop
in so many ways; you will be amazed at how they’ve grown
both socially and emotionally along their journey.
They will learn how important it is to communicate to fellow
students and guides alike, have an adventurous spirit and
challenge themselves in ways that would have previously been
impossible while pushing themselves out of their comfort zone
to experience something new and exciting. Learning to love
and appreciate the environment and why it’s so important to
take responsibility for it, will be part of the experience, as each
and every person can make a difference. Patience and
determination will be learnt, to see things through to the end
no matter what the circumstances, as they strive to be the best
they can be.
Students will take a last look around Queenstown,
get a bit of shopping done before they are
transferred to Queenstown Airport.
This program is designed to bring out the best in every student
that we encounter, and you will reap the rewards when they get
home, as you see a teenager who has grown in more ways than
one, contributing to the world around them.
