Outdoors <strong>Adventure</strong> <strong>Tongariro</strong> Program<br />
They will work in small groups with a highly-skilled instructor<br />
and will create remarkable bonds to develop trust, self-belief and<br />
passion. As they live, work and play with others, they will belong<br />
to a community andunderstand how they contribute directly to<br />
the overall success and how they can make a difference in other<br />
people’s lives.<br />
As they enter the great, wild wilderness, they will experience<br />
a glimpse of times gone by, without any digital distractions,<br />
just plain, simple and meaningful living in one of the most<br />
beautiful areas of New Zealand.<br />
Students will get to go on epic adventures in <strong>Tongariro</strong> National<br />
Park, snow sporting adventures during the winter season at<br />
Mt Ruapehu or white water rafting on the <strong>Tongariro</strong> River.<br />
<strong>Tongariro</strong> National Park, was the first National Park in<br />
New Zealand and the fourth in the world.<br />

About Hillary Outdoors <strong>Tongariro</strong> Program<br />
Established in 1887, <strong>Tongariro</strong> was the first National Park in<br />
New Zealand. It is also a dual World Heritage area recognizing<br />
the Park’s important Maori cultural and spiritual associations,<br />
as well as its outstanding volcanic features in an area surrounded<br />
by lakes, rivers, mountains and native bush.<br />
This is an inspirational adventure, which has its roots firmly<br />
planted in the determination and strength that pushed Sir<br />
Edmund Hillary to conquer the summit of Mount Everest.<br />
The Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre was created over 40 years<br />
ago, through the collaboration of New Zealand’s most famous<br />
mountaineers and adventurers, Sir Edmund Hillary and<br />
Graeme Dingle.<br />
This epic adventure will see your teenager’s abseiling, rock climbing, caving,<br />
kayaking, mastering high ropes, learning bush skills, camping and hiking<br />
some of the world’s most stunning mountains. Astounding beauty like this<br />
will be hard to find, with the Hillary Outdoors <strong>Tongariro</strong> Program located<br />
in a beautiful wilderness area of the Central North Island.<br />
Students work in teams, learn to trust fellow adventurers, solve<br />
problems, and challenge themselves physically, reaching<br />
beyond their comfort zone. This is a once-in-a-lifetime<br />

Students are given the opportunity to make sense of their lives<br />
and dream about the possibilities that their bright future’s hold<br />
as they form new friendships with other students, immerse<br />
themselves in another culture, learn the value of working<br />
together, build leadership skills and see the magnificence that<br />
nature holds for them. They learn to face challenges on their<br />
own, and importantly, they learn how to solve them; an<br />
outstanding skill for future success.<br />

strength of character to conquer their worlds.<br />
Your young students will learn important life skills like being<br />
outstanding in every way and being the best they can be. They<br />

the core of their being, as they understand how important it is<br />
to honor their word to all those around them. They will<br />

Activities<br />
Outdoor Activity Days<br />
Experience the exciting outdoors through a<br />
mountain or climbing day, caving and abseiling<br />
or perhaps a peaceful kayak or canoe ride on<br />
enchanting lakes. There are boundless activities<br />
to choose from, and these will be chosen<br />
dependent on the weather. Days will be filled<br />
with adventure, fun, courage, cultural<br />
experiences as well as environmental awareness.<br />
Activity Based Learning<br />
Students engage in ice-breaker and warm up exercises,<br />
Activity Based Learning (ABL) games which include<br />
trust, communication, initiative and problem solving,<br />
basic navigation training and practical bush tramping<br />
skills. Exciting experiences include high ropes and low<br />
ropes, a Flying Fox thrill ride, where they f ly in a<br />
harness which is attached to a fixed cable above the<br />
Mangatepopo River. Their trusty team mates will pull<br />
them back to the beginning for the next thrill seeker.<br />
Mountain Day<br />
The challenge awaits your young explorer. The<br />
theme of the day is to summit a peak within<br />
the <strong>Tongariro</strong> National Park or even a smaller<br />
peak in the local bush. This experience will<br />
teach them to work as a team, trust their<br />
instincts and grow physically and emotionally<br />
as they reach those dizzying heights.
Activities<br />
Overnight Expeditions<br />
Experience the beauty of the outdoors at<br />
night, whether it isin the bush, a mountain<br />
or on a lake. This will depend on weather<br />
and of course the ability of the students.<br />
These last for two days with a single night<br />
camp out for enjoyment and adventure.<br />
Water Day<br />
Expect your students to enjoy the<br />
unbelievable sights and sounds on the water<br />
during summer as they go caving, single<br />
tube floating on a local stream teeming with<br />
life, kayaking and canoeing on the impressive<br />
lakes and experience sit-on-top kayaks.<br />
Snow Day<br />
This four day course is for intermediate to<br />
advanced skiers or boarders who wish to<br />
leave the ski area boundary and carve up<br />
the untracked powder slopes. This is a<br />
physically challenging course which will<br />
take advantage of the exquisite backcountry<br />
and slack country terrain of Mount Ruapehu.<br />

A Day in the Life<br />
Nature’s Beauty<br />
What can your teenagers expect from the <strong>Tongariro</strong> Outdoor<br />
<strong>Youth</strong> Development Program on a daily basis?<br />
They will be out in the wilderness, enjoying the beauty of<br />
nature with their instructors from 9am to 5pm each day.<br />
Lunch and snacks are included to keep up those energy<br />
levels and they get to savor the taste of the special and<br />
famous Dingle biscuit.<br />
• When overnighting, they will be away from the center<br />
with their own dedicated and knowledgeable instructor<br />
while they experience a night under the magical<br />
New Zealand sky.<br />
• Expect an early start of 6:30am, as each student is involved in<br />
kitchen duties, where preparation and cleaning-up is included.<br />
• They will take part in housekeeping duties, preparing<br />
them for the world out there.<br />
• A hearty breakfast is served at 7:30am, to prepare them<br />
for the day ahead.<br />
• Dinner is served at 6:30pm as they sample some real<br />
New Zealand delights.<br />
• Special evening activities are planned each night from around<br />
8pm, encouraging students to bond with each other, have<br />
some fun and relax after their adventurous days!<br />

Hillary Outdoors has a Safety Management Plan that everyone<br />
has a responsibility towards including instructors and students<br />
too. They take safety very seriously so that each and every<br />
student will experience the best out of this amazing adventure.<br />
Everyone commits and complies with the safety regulations<br />
and staff are all physically and mentally fit to do their jobs.<br />
All staff are trained and have the necessary skills to ensure the<br />
safety of program participants. They leave no stone unturned<br />
as they seek out knowledge of weather conditions, the<br />
environment, any access problems and will put a stop to<br />
activities if there are any dangers lurking.<br />
Safety is our number one concern and you can rest assured<br />
that every precaution will be taken to keep your children out<br />
of harm’s way.<br />

students are part of the special community and are encouraged<br />
to make positive contributions to the community as a whole<br />

Booking and Payment<br />
On confi rmation of a final outdoor adventure booking, the client agrees to pay a 50% non-refundable booking fee. This will allow Black Label Experience Ltd to make the<br />
necessary bookings for the outdoor adventure to ensure firm bookings are held for the client. The final non-refundable payment of the final balance is due one month before<br />
the outdoor adventure or on arrival in New Zealand. Black Label Experience Ltd has the right to cancel any arrangements and bookings made for the client if full payment<br />
is not received before the event or arrival in country and will treat the trip/event as a canceled booking until full payment is received.
