BRENTWOOD ART SOCIETY
Brentwood Art Society came into
being when a new arrival thought
the town lacked culture and set
about forming an art group. Just
three people responded to Mr
Balch’s newspaper advert. That
was in 1958 and today, despite
that unpromising start, the Society
is a thriving organisation bringing
like minded people together to
share and develop their interest in
the visual arts.
The Society meets twice a week,
from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in the art
studios of Brentwood School.
Monday evenings are practical
sessions led by professional tutors
who provide starting points in
different media, often using
approaches that are challenging
but always interesting. On Thursday
evenings members work from a life model,
without a tutor.
There are talks, gallery visits, a printmaking
week with access to a 19th century Albion
press, weekend workshops, art weekends
away, an annual exhibition held in
Brentwood Library, local painting days and
an annual dinner. Last June members of
the Society were guests of another group
of artists based in Montbazon, the French
town that is twinned with Brentwood, and
we are looking forward to a return visit by
our French hosts next June.
The Society is not for complete beginners
but associate membership is available for
those with less experience. Membership is
£25 per year and £5 for each studio
session. Membership is open to those living
within and outside the Brentwood area.
