BULLETIN BOARD, from page 20
awards are the nation’s highest honors for
math and science teachers.
“Awardees serve as models for their colleagues,
inspiration to their communities,
and leaders in the improvement of mathematics
and science education. Since 1983,
more than 4,700 teachers have
been recognized for their contributions
in the classroom and
to their profession,” the website
stated.
When asked about her philosophy
on education, Mabie
said, “I believe passion and
excitement about curricular
content is contagious. Every
day, I encourage my students
to discover a love for mathematics.
I feel that the personal
relationship I form with my
students is sometimes more
important than the content. I
want my students to know that I care about
them as individuals.”
She added, “These bonds impact the
level of effort I see in my students; they
know I believe in them and that boosts
their confidence. I believe that my role as a
teacher is to challenge my students to grow
and learn in order to meet their potential.”
Presidential Awards for Excellence in
Mathematics and Science winners are
typically announced and honored the year
following receipt of the application. Each
awardee receives a certificate signed by the
president and a $10,000 award. Winners
are honored during events that take place
in Washington, D.C.
Local family participates in
intercultural exchange program
In August, Stephen and Kumiko Hamaguchi,
of Chesterfield, welcomed Elias, a
17-year-old international exchange student
from Finland. The Hamaguchis were
matched with Elias, who will be attending
Parkway Central High for the school year,
through Youth For Understanding USA
[YFU].
YFU – one of the world’s oldest, largest
and most respected intercultural exchange
programs – has placed hundreds of international
exchange students with host families
across the country each year since 1951. To
date, more than 260,000 students and their
host families have benefited from these
shared cultural experiences.
Hosting is about sharing your version of
the American lifestyle with an exchange
student while also gaining a new global
perspective, many memories and a new
family member for life. Exchange students
experience tremendous personal growth.
At the same time, the impressions made
by the students broaden perspectives of
Kate Luckerman, a
student at Parkway
Central, is the second
child in the family to
score a perfect ACT.
host families and ultimately ripple through
schools and across entire communities.
Perfect ACT score
runs in the family
Parkway Central High student Kate
Luckerman scored a 36 – the highest
possible score – on the ACT
college-admissions and placement
exam. Nationally, while
the actual number of students
earning the top score varies
from year to year, on average,
less than one-tenth of one percent
of students who take the
ACT earn a top score. In the
high school graduating class of
2016 in the United States, only
2,235 out of nearly 2.1 million
graduates who took the ACT
earned a composite score of 36.
What makes this even more
unique is that this is the second
year in a row for a perfect score in the Luckerman
household. Kate’s older brother,
Alex, scored a perfect ACT last year.
The ACT consists of tests in English,
mathematics, reading and science. Each
test is scored on a scale of 1-36; a student’s
composite score is the average of the four
test scores. Some students also take the
optional ACT writing test, but the score for
that test is reported separately and is not
included within the ACT composite score.
Parkway schools give back
to Hurricane Relief efforts
On Sept. 1, all four Parkway high schools
[South, North, West and Central] hosted
football games with a special outreach
opportunity – collecting supplies and
monetary contributions for hurricane relief
efforts. The Parkway community raised
nearly $10,000 and received enough supplies
to fill three truckloads.
Following the games, an alumnus from
West High and a U.S. Marine delivered the
donations [including an air drop] to those
in need. All monetary donations were sent
directly to the American Red Cross.
Other schools, like South Middle and
Henry Elementary, collected either specific
items or cash to go toward relief centers.
Pierremont raised $765 for Dogan Elementary
School in Houston during its Hats on
for Houston day. Bellerive had its own hurricane
relief collection efforts. For 50 cents,
students could dress crazy [inside out,
mismatched clothing, crazy hair or wacky
socks]. Carman Trails had a penny drive,
collecting $839.22 for the victims of Hurricane
Harvey. Green Trails collected food
and baby items for those affected, and a
group of Green Trails parents made peanut
butter and jelly sandwiches for community
member Jennifer Little to take to Houston.
