Eureka Scarecrow Festival returns with
more ‘outstanding’ creations for 2017

From Oct. 1-31, the city of Eureka comes
alive, displaying a colorful and artistic
assortment of handmade scarecrows
posing in front of businesses, churches,
schools and local homes for the annual
Eureka Scarecrow Festival.
These scarecrows aren’t your typical
hardware store accessory. Instead, they’re
made from a variety of materials to reflect a
business or organization. Some scarecrows
are custom made, while others are rented
or constructed by the event’s creative team.
Residents can venture down Fifth Street,
Central Avenue, the downtown area and
more to discover scarecrows in old and
new parts of the city. So far, about 100
scarecrows have been officially registered
with another 80 scarecrows set to be placed
around other commissioned scarecrows in
the community for a grand total of about
180 scarecrows with about 100 participating
businesses from Eureka and beyond.

[Ward 3], the festival stands out not just due
to its length, but because of the attention it
brings to the local businesses and artists.
“We just had Eureka Days, which was
very successful, but the Scarecrow Festival
does something different,” Gryzb said.
“We have people walking up and down the
streets for a month-long period with all
kinds of different events. People and their
families are walking up with grandma and
grandpa looking at different scarecrows
and taking pictures. It’s really unique.”
The Eureka Scarecrow Festival first
began after its founder, Barbara Scheer,
visited a similar event in California.
Scheer and her team of about 10 volunteers
have worked to build scarecrows each
year since the first festival in 2014. They
currently operate out of a workshop in the
basement of Farmers & Merchants Bank.
“That is where every single scarecrow
has been built or stored for this year,” Julie
Wood, the economic director for Eureka,
