numerous runners in the last leg of the
2016 triathlon to claim gold, finishing with
a remarkable time of 54:02. Hindman was
only the third American to win the event
and the first to win since 2011.
A nine-time high school state champion,
Hindman joined the Mizzou cross country
and track and field teams this fall.
Men’s triathlon is not an NCAA-sponsored
sport, so Hindman will be competing
in cross country events for Mizzou while
still racing triathlons at the international
level. He cites the biggest adjustment for
him while transitioning to college has been
finding ways to maximize his time to make
sure he gets both his studying and rigorous
training in.
Thomas
“I come to practice and run with my team
and then just try and get in my swim and
bike workouts at other points in the day,
mostly on my own,” Hindman said. “If
there are other guys heading to the pool for
cross-training or going out on the bike, I
try and link up with them. It’s just making
sure I get in what I have to get in.”
College men’s golf
Marquette graduate Frankie Thomas
recorded his best tournament finish at
Southern Illinois University since tying for
sixth place in his Saluki debut in September
2016 at Murray State.
Thomas, a sophomore from Chesterfield,
finished 2 under par to tie for 12th
place out of 75 golfers in Iowa’s
Golfweek Conference Challenge at
Cedar Rapids Country Club. The
tournament featured 10 teams that
were ranked in the top 100 at the
end of last season.
The Salukis finished 11th as a
team.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled for
Frankie’s performance,” SIU head
coach Justin Fetcho said. “Coming
off the tournament at Wolf Run
where he didn’t play well, he came
back and qualified, but felt his
game wasn’t quite there. He knew
CBC heads across the state to meet
Rockhurst in a battle of Class 6 powers
that highlights the schedule for Week 8.
The first time the CBC Cadets played
the Rockhurst Hawklets will live forever
in the program’s history. It should. It had
a memorable outcome for the program.
The two teams meet in the Class 6 state
championship game on Nov. 29, 2014, at
the Edward Jones Dome. CBC scored a
31-24 victory in that meeting. The win
capped off a perfect 14-0 season for the
Cadets and coach Scott Pingel.
Rockhurst has nine state championships.
Its first title came in 1971 and the
most recent in 2010.
The Cadets will travel across the state
he didn’t have his best stuff going into this
week, but he gave his all for his teammates
and had a great tournament.”
Thomas, who is predominantly righthanded
but golfs left-handed, was second
overall in the field with 14 birdies.
“He’s in the mix trying to win a golf tournament
and then he starts out on a tough
