The Ocoee Fire Department was 

awarded a three-year grant of nearly 

$1.5 million from the Department 

compiled by Lauren Salinero 

of Homeland Security’s SAFER 

— Staffing for Adequate Fire & 

Emergency Response — grant 

program. The program assists 

departments with the funding of 

personnel to ensure that their communities 

have the needed fire and 

emergency services protection. The 

Ocoee Fire Department applied 

for the FEMA grant to hire 12 new 

firefighters to staff a fire engine in 

one of the fast-growing areas of 

the city. When hired, the personnel 

and fire apparatus will continue 

to respond from the temporary fire 

station, located at Ocoee-Apopka 

and West roads. The Ocoee City 

Commission approved building a 

new fire station in the northwest 

area of the city, and it is expected 

to be completed in the next 24 to 

36 months.

The Dr. Phillips High School 

football team battled West 

Orange High School once again 

for the Ole Orange Crate, a longstanding 

rivalry between the two 

teams. DPHS senior quarterback 

BeSean McCray threw a careerhigh 

of 295 yards and three touchdowns, 

two of which went to senior 

Davarius Bargnare, who caught 

three passes for a career-high of 

135 yards. As a team, the Panthers 

racked up a school record of 592 

yards of offense and won the game 

44-24. 

Devodney Alford scored two 

of the touchdowns, and Brandon 

Fields got one in the end zone with 

a total game of three touchdowns for 

the Panthers. 

The United States Tennis 

Association National Campus 

at Lake Nona hosted the USTA 

Junior Team Tennis National 

Championships for 14-under and 

18-under. The championships serve 

as the crown jewel of the USTA 

Junior Team Tennis season, as the 

nation’s top teams compete for a 

national title. It featured the top 32 

teams from each age group and 

included hundreds of players from 

across the country, including Hawaii 

and the Caribbean. It was also the 

first time USTA National Campus 

hosted the event. 

“The National Championships is 

a yearly capstone event, and we 

could not be more excited to host it 

at the USTA National Campus,” said 

Matt Barnhart, national manager 

for USTA Junior Team Tennis, 

prior to the event. “The players really 

enjoy the competition aspect, as 

well as getting the chance to bond 

with other players from all over the 

country, on and off the court.”

old. A first-grader at Holy Family 

Catholic School and resident of 

Summerport, James is currently 

ranked No. 11 in the 6-and-under 

age group for the U.S. Kids Golf 

Tour in the state of Florida, and he 

accomplished that while he was still 

age 5. James recently finished third 

in the Orlando U.S. Kids Summer 

Tour and took first place in the 

Jacksonville U.S. Kids Summer Tour. 

That win guarantees James a spot in 

the U.S. Kids World Championship 

that takes place at Pinehurst in 

August 2018.

The preparation for a partial knee 

or hip replacement surgery using 

the Mako robotic arm begins long 

before a patient is in the operating 

room. Initial meetings between the 

surgeon and the patient determine 

if the patient is a candidate for the 

Mako surgery through tests, symptoms/complaints 

and assessment of 

the patient’s previous treatments. 

From there, a CT scan is performed 

on the knee or hip to create 

an individualized virtual anatomic 

3-D model used in surgery to help 

position the implant. 

The robotic arm is then brought 

along the patient’s bedside, where 

the surgeon uses the robot and burr 

(rotary cutting tool) to remove the 

bone as designated by the mapping 

software. This creates a precise and 

specific position for the implant in 

the patient. 

“It allows you to map out the knee 

live in surgery with a probe that also 

has a tracker on it,” said Dr. Van 

Dyke, who regularly performs partial 

knee replacements at the hospital. 

“The robot isn’t moving it; the surgeon 

is moving the burr and robotic 

arm as it follows the trackers to not 

let the surgeon move it past its zone.” 

For Dr. Padden, who was among 

the first surgeons instrumental in using 

the Mako system for partial knee 

replacements, seeing how effective 

the Mako system is for full hip 

replacements is life-changing. 

“A study by Harvard showed that 

about 50 percent of the time in hip 

replacement surgeries, the surgeon 

is off by 10 degrees or more,” Dr. 

Padden said. “With the robotic arm 

using synaptics [science of touch 

and feel], it gives surgeons a huge 

degree of protection and comfort; 

valuable in not just the planning of 

the surgery but the performance as 

well.”

precise CTs, MRIs and other diagnostic exams, but the facility offers a relaxing 

spa-like environment where patients are treated as guests. Moreover, 

patients do not pay a facility fee, which is usually charged when receiving 

imaging services in hospital settings. Did you know that you can specify 

to your doctor where you would like to receive your diagnostic imaging? 

Because you want an accurate diagnosis of what’s happening inside your 

body, the decision where to have your imaging done can be as important 

as the doctor you choose. Choosing to have your diagnostic exams done 

at a facility accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) is a

Seniors First seeks 50 volunteers to assist in 

fulfilling the high demand of its Meals on 

Wheels program, which provides meals and 

outreach to seniors who are unable to prepare 

or have meals otherwise provided. There are 

eight pickup areas in the Greater Orlando 

area, and the commitment is once per week 

for approximately 1.5-2 hours on weekday 

mornings. Volunteers must be 18-older and 

have a valid driver’s license, insurance and

Hospice and Palliative Care. The daylong 

session equips participants with 

the skills needed to provide care and 

companionship to Cornerstone Hospice 

patients in their homes or in a facility. 

All of the company’s volunteers 

must go through training and will be 

subject to a background check. Lunch 

and refreshments are provided, and 

advanced registration is required. Time:
