The air fryer popped onto the
kitchen appliance scene in 2010. It
experienced its first big sales boom
in 2017; however, sales skyrocketed
during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2020, about 36% of American
households had an air fryer, and
sales have increased by 76% over the
past two years compared
to the previous two. An air
fryer works by circulating
air and heat quickly in a
small space. This allows
food to retain its moisture,
and heats it evenly and
quickly. The promise of
crispy food without the oil
required for frying was a
game-changer for many
households, offering a
healthier alternative in
a time when most were
stuck inside making meals
at home. The convenience
and speed of an air fryer
are also top selling points
along with its versatility.
Whether it’s breakfast,
lunch, dinner, snacks or
We
deliver
dessert — the possibilities
are endless.
HOW TO ...
Get the Most From Your Air Fryer
Crispy Food Without the Grease!
by Lauren Gonsalves
Bacon-Wrapped
Jalapeños
Ingredients:
4 jalapeños
3 ounces cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar
cheese
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
4 slices of bacon
Method:
Cut jalapeños lengthwise and
scrape out seeds with a spoon. In a
small bowl, combine cream cheese,
cheddar cheese, garlic powder and
onion powder. Spoon the mixture
into the peppers. Cut bacon slices in
half, and wrap each one around a
pepper half. Cook in air fryer at 400
F degrees for 10 minutes.
French Fries
Ingredients:
2 russet potatoes
2 tablespoons olive oil
Salt to taste
Method:
Preheat air fryer to 380 F degrees.
Cut potatoes lengthwise in 1/4-inch
thick fries, leaving skin on. Drizzle with
oil and salt. Add fries to basket in a
single layer. Work in batches, and
don’t overcrowd the basket — space
between the fries helps the air to circulate
and crisp the fries. Air fry for 12-
15 minutes, flipping fries in the basket
halfway through. May need more time
depending on amount of fries. Remove
when crisp and browning at the edges.
Chocolate Chip Cookies
Ingredients:
3/4 cup unsalted butter
1 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
Method:
In a large bowl, cream together
butter, sugar and brown sugar. Add
eggs, vanilla extract, salt, baking
soda and half the flour. Mix until
combined. Mix on medium speed
while adding remaining half of flour
until dough is thick and creamy. Add
chocolate chips and stir until evenly
distributed throughout the dough.
Spoon dough into balls and place
in the air fryer on top of parchment
paper. Space out dough balls, leaving
about an inch between cookies.
Cook at 300 F degrees for 7-8
minutes. Let sit for 1-2 minutes, then
transfer to a wire rack for cooling. ª
Recognizing a growing demand
for orthopedic care, Orlando
Health has created the Orlando
Health Jewett Orthopedic
Institute on its downtown
campus.
“We’re excited about this new
institute, because it is the only one
in the Southeast that brings together
excellence in patient care and
streamlines the experience for the
patient,” said orthopedic surgeon
George Haidukewych, M.D.,
academic chairman at the institute
and an Emerson Point resident.
“Also, we do education and we do
research here.”
Orlando Health will continue to
operate its orthopedic clinics in
Windermere, Spring Lake and
Horizon West, which include imaging
and rehabilitation therapy.
Orthopedic surgeries, emergency
and fracture care will continue at
Orlando Health Dr. Phillips,
Health Central and Horizon
West hospitals. Orlando Health
Jewett Orthopedic Institute physicians
also will have access to the
More than 45 orthopedic surgeons
and sports medicine physicians are
employed by Orlando Health. This
$300 million institute will create between
350 to 400 new health care
positions.
“We are able to provide something
competitive and a service to
this region, Central Florida and the
Southeast,” Carrasco said. “We will
attract patients needing orthopedic
care.”
The 375,000-square-foot, sevenstory
institute features separate inpatient
and outpatient areas, all
dedicated to making patients feel
well cared for. The outpatient phase
opened first at the end of last month,
and the hospital will open in August
of this year. A parking deck with
a bridge to the institute was built
across the street.
“We are focusing on the patient
experience, because it is the right
thing to do professionally,” Carrasco
said. “We want patients to be happy
with the results they come to us for.”
Outpatient Care
Imaging, physician appointments
and rehabilitation therapies are all
located in the same building. The
institute also has 12 ambulatory
surgery center operating rooms and
62 exam rooms for walk-in care and
consults. Institute officials anticipate
about 1,000 patients will visit the
outpatient side of the facility daily.
Those patients can also access laboratory
services and a pharmacy.
The physical therapy department
features different flooring to help
athletes get back to their games,
including artificial grass with a golf
and soccer simulator and hardwood
floors to help rehabilitate basketball
players.
The institute installed magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI) machines
that can produce diagnostic images
in about seven minutes rather than
the traditional 30 minutes or longer.
The machine also can take two images
at once.
“It has the ability to acquire more
images at a given moment, and that
reduces scan time,” said Jonathan
Kazam, M.D., director of radiology
for the orthopedic institute.
“These scanners have an element
of artificial intelligence that also
speeds up the imaging acquisition
process.”
The faster machines will increase
access, because more patients can
receive imaging in a day. It also
should help decrease the anxiety
or claustrophobia some patients
experience when being scanned
in an MRI machine for a long time.
Patients in the MRI rooms can participate
in an immersive experience
such as visiting nature scenes, helping
the patient to relax and hold still.
“All of these things will put the patient
at ease,” Dr. Kazam said.
Inpatient Care
The hospital side has 10 operating
rooms and 75 smart patient rooms
with electronic educational features
and the ability to access streaming
services.
The institute employs anesthesiologists
and radiologists, making
collaboration easy. Additionally, patients
will not receive surprise bills.
The operating rooms are equipped
with cameras to livestream surgeries
for training physicians about new
procedures and future doctors about
orthopedic operations. The operating
rooms also feature Cleansuite air
flow technology to prevent infections.
In the hospital lobby, the institute
has set up a demonstration operating
room for patients with upcoming
surgeries to become familiar with
where their operation will occur and
all of the components.
“We want to reduce anxiety and
engage [patients] at their own pace
and time,” Carrasco said. “It comes
back to how we can create an experience
with patients.”
Research and Education
Orlando Health has long been a
leader in physician education. Its educational
program began almost 100
years ago and already trains 25 residents
and seven fellows each year.
“That is a significant responsibility,”
Carrasco said. “We are training physicians
who will go out and care for
patients.”
The facility includes a 10-station cadaver
lab and a 116-seat auditorium
for residents, fellows or attending
physicians from around the country to
watch surgeries, listen to lectures or
take courses.
Being a teaching facility keeps
Orlando Health on the cutting edge
of new technologies. And with a
strong reputation, it will attract more
residents and fellows to the institute.
“Our teams know what progress
is being made,” Carrasco said.
“Research and education [are] about
our patients, providers and folks we
train and send out into the world.” ª
Q Florida residents can host a
foreign exchange student
In an age when international relations
are often tenuous, AFS-USA, a
leader in international high school
student exchange for 75 years, is
focused on providing opportunities
for intercultural exchange that can
help lead to a more just and peaceful
world. AFS-USA encourages families
and individuals from the area
and surrounding communities to become
hosts for international students
for 12 weeks, a semester or an academic
year.
Hosting provides individuals, families,
high schools and communities
with opportunities to learn about the
unfamiliar by exploring a diversity of
cultures, all while sharing their own
culture with a young person from
a different country. Exchange students
represent nearly 80 countries
and cultures, including Chile, Egypt,
Germany, Italy, Kenya, Thailand,
Türkiye, Ukraine and more. They are
among the more than 1,000 international
AFS students hosted in the
U.S. each year.
Once students and host families
are matched, they receive ongoing
support from trained staff and are
welcomed into their local chapter
of dedicated volunteers, alumni
and fellow host families. Hosts are
expected to provide their student(s)
with a bed, meals, support and
encouragement throughout their
program. Students arrive with their
own spending money and medical
coverage.
