surgery center operating rooms and
62 exam rooms for walk-in care and
consults. Institute officials anticipate
about 1,000 patients will visit the
outpatient side of the facility daily.
Those patients can also access laboratory
services and a pharmacy.
The physical therapy department
features different flooring to help
athletes get back to their games,
including artificial grass with a golf
and soccer simulator and hardwood
floors to help rehabilitate basketball
players.
The institute installed magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI) machines
that can produce diagnostic images
in about seven minutes rather than
the traditional 30 minutes or longer.
The machine also can take two images
at once.
“It has the ability to acquire more
images at a given moment, and that
reduces scan time,” said Jonathan
Kazam, M.D., director of radiology
for the orthopedic institute.
“These scanners have an element
of artificial intelligence that also
speeds up the imaging acquisition
process.”
The faster machines will increase
access, because more patients can
receive imaging in a day. It also
should help decrease the anxiety
or claustrophobia some patients
experience when being scanned
in an MRI machine for a long time.
Patients in the MRI rooms can participate
in an immersive experience
such as visiting nature scenes, helping
the patient to relax and hold still.
“All of these things will put the patient
at ease,” Dr. Kazam said.
Inpatient Care
The hospital side has 10 operating
rooms and 75 smart patient rooms
with electronic educational features
and the ability to access streaming
services.
The institute employs anesthesiologists
and radiologists, making
collaboration easy. Additionally, patients
will not receive surprise bills.
The operating rooms are equipped
with cameras to livestream surgeries
for training physicians about new
procedures and future doctors about
orthopedic operations. The operating
rooms also feature Cleansuite air
flow technology to prevent infections.
In the hospital lobby, the institute
has set up a demonstration operating
room for patients with upcoming
surgeries to become familiar with
where their operation will occur and
all of the components.
“We want to reduce anxiety and
engage [patients] at their own pace
and time,” Carrasco said. “It comes
back to how we can create an experience
with patients.”
Research and Education
Orlando Health has long been a
leader in physician education. Its educational
program began almost 100
years ago and already trains 25 residents
and seven fellows each year.
“That is a significant responsibility,”
Carrasco said. “We are training physicians
who will go out and care for
patients.”
The facility includes a 10-station cadaver
lab and a 116-seat auditorium
for residents, fellows or attending
physicians from around the country to
watch surgeries, listen to lectures or
take courses.
