KFC's mastermind Colon Sanders followed an unlikely path
to creating a multi billion-dollar international company.
Like most successful entrepreneurs Sanders has a story
behind his success and like many he experienced some real
hardships in life and describes feeling like a failure .
Best known for founding the fast-food chain Kentucky Fried
Chicken, Colonel Harland David Sanders was born on
September 9, 1890, in Henryville, Indiana. One summer
afternoon in 1895, his father came home with a fever and
died later that day. After his father died when he was 6
years old, Sanders became responsible for feeding and
taking care of his younger brother and sister
He felt like a failure & decided to commit suicide. He sat
writing his will, but instead, he wrote what he would have
accomplished with his life & thought about how good of a
cook he was. So he borrowed $87 fried up some chicken
using his recipe, went door to door to sell. This was all
during the time of the Great Depression.
At the age of 40, Sanders was running a popular Kentucky
service station that also served food? so popular, in fact,
that the governor of Kentucky designated him a Kentucky
colonel.
At age 88 Colonel Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried
Chicken (KFC) Empire was a billionaire.
Nearly 60-years-old, he would spend days at a restaurant,
peddling his chicken technique, cooking for customers, and
often sleeping in the back of his car
Kentucky Fried Chicken went public in 1966 and
was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in
1969. More than 3,500 franchised and
company-owned restaurants were in worldwide
operation when Heublein Inc. acquired KFC
Corporation in 1971for $285 million
